You got the idea, the lecturer wanted to identify the unserious students in that class. I once asked for notes to be submitted and was shocked to discover that some students cannot write the course code/title.

Some students just come to the class to distract others.

I am not trying to rob this in but that is not the best way to know if a student is serious or not...
A lecturer can group students into 12 or 13 depending on the group, he can ask them to pick a topic from the course outline....if the course is for 2hrs, They can use 15mins to present it briefly.....U can dictate serious ones from there and the ones that are not can be helped....

I was only borrowing a leaf from our minister of darkness (pun intended). Nigerian lectures are the real problem, imagine one of my lecturer that's is always boasting of his good grades when he was in skul and was always berating us in classes was later discovered that he graduated with a 2.2.

Me and my colleagues planed to paste his result all over the dept cos this man was terrible. If u don't answer his questions verbatim then oyo is your name.

4. We still hv those who write in one note n then complete it in a totally different note.

6. Not to forget that most of us buy notes n just don't write your name on it, even wen we do, we barely write our real names as known by d sch mgt.

I had an English teacher like that when I was in secondary school in Nigeria.....he graduated from UK.
He made the school unpleasant for us...
If we do anything, he will criticize us...Oh u don't have to laugh like that...u don't speak like that, the whites do not do it like that etc.....All this was because we do not have white kids in our school..

When I was heading out of the country, u can imagine my anger when there where so many white on the plane and majority of them were snoring and i dislike that habit.....My anger was so much on the teacher that made them look like angels instead of human.....unfortunately, i have graduated then..I just wish i could see him that day that i was boiling with anger toward him....

So u guys should spare him...I guess that's his own little way of telling u guys to be serious...if not for him, think about the other students that has heard his ranting and vow to do better than him....

I cannot say for sure if the request for notes is too much, but at Middle East Technical University,department of physics, first year, Mechanics and Electromagnetism, fall semester and spring semester respectively, you have to submit a pre-report electronically via a portal, before a deadline(the portal counts down to the deadline and goes offline), usually 11:59 a.m sunday morning, and prior to every topic. ANd do not even think of preparing the pre-report inadequately or plagiarizing, as there is an algorithm inbuilt that automatically tells you how much of your work was copied,if the plagiarism indicator exceeds 20%, you automatically get a zero, even when it is less than 20% and your pre-report indicates a significant level of inadequacy, you will have a zero, meanwhile you have at most two missed pre-reports, and at least 65% 1's.

Um a lecturer and i do that every semester. Its 10 marks for a complete note. Ive discovered tht many students fail because they dont write note, rather do other unnecessary things. And u as d lecturer will be blamed if d failure ratio is high

Yes, making detailed notes might be really irrelevant, especially for standardized systems that ensure that the proceedings of every lecture class(audio recording) is recorded, but pre-notes might can prove to be very significant.

Students would form a long queue in front of his office. Then enter one after the other for thorough marking of notes and assignments. Very tedious exercise. He would take his time to do this even if its for 3days. "No wishy washy" is his trademark word.

Yes most of the lecturers in my dept here in MAUTECH (FUTY) do mark notes at d end of semesta. Especially my structural analysis lecturer. He started marking our notes right frum strength of material EG214 CE301 to structural analysis CE302 CE401.

The syllabus for submission of notes is still the same since 1914
My father told me they used to submit there note while in college

Nigerian Universities and their lecturers! Notes submission in university? Hearing this for the first time. Gone are days when lecturers are up and doing with real technical ways of assessing students

In any organized formal meeting all over the world, serious-minded people must have a pen and paper. You can check that yourself. More so, personal note taking is the most effective method of learning and assimilation.

Not right to me. Higher institutions are not O'Levels where they monitor Notes. Even coming to class is not compulsory. Read and write tests and exams, that's all. And make sure 70% attendance is meant.
