Episode two

Amaka fed her baby. Yes. This little cherub is hers now, she couldn't help thinking of her as her own. She burped the child and placed her gently on her settee while she gave her mechanic a call. He promised to bring her car the next day. She disconnected the call in anger and picked her bags with her left hand, she lifted the baby gently on to her shoulder. Her pastor was right about one thing, caring for a baby wasn't an easy task.

The cab she took crawled slowly at snail pace, the traffic on third mainland bridge was hectic as usual. She sighed in frustration. She unlocked her phone for the first time that morning and was stunned to see several email and message notifications. She checked her mail and her fears was confirmed. Her boss had indeed sent her several mails last night informing her of an emergency board meeting at 7 am. She glanced at her wrist watch and sighed deeply. 8.00am.

Why had she decided to help the baby in the first place?her relationship is slowly going down the drain and now she had just put her job at risk. She had stayed up all night with the baby who was restless and she had ended up over sleeping.

She hurried into the reception area, her hair was matted to her forehead with sweat. Her blouse was stained with baby milk at the front. She knew she looked disheveled but she was past the point of caring. Her boss, some colleagues and two white men stepped out of the board room, they looked at her momentarily before carrying on with their handshakes. She went into her office and slumped in to her chair. Her P.A came in, she gave the baby to her and left the office.

She knocked softly on the CEO' s office door before entering. " Good morning sir, i apologize for coming late. Am so sorry..."

" Do you know what you have cost this company? You kept our foreign investors waiting for over two hours! Take a look at yourself! You look like a mad woman! how dare you even bring a child to the office! Is this a creche? Please leave my office at once!"

" Sir, please let me explain "

" Please leave".

She walked back into her office on shaky legs. Her P.A handed her an envelope, she told her it was from human resources. She opened it and read the letter, she had been placed on a two weeks suspension. Why me lord? i only tried to help! She couldn't lose her job, her job was very important to her and she had worked hard to be where she was. Her phone beeped on her desk and she picked it up. " Is 5pm alright with you?it is better if we take the child to the orphanage in the evening."_Pastor.

She collected the baby from her P.A and picked up her bags. This child had done her more harm than good. First it was micheal, now her job, she was ready to take this ' bad luck' to the orphanage. Her P.A silently wondered what was going on, she felt sorry for her boss, she offered to help her carry one of the bags but her boss insisted on carrying it herself. She only hopes her boss knows what she was doing.

bibijay123:
Amaka was a beautiful and classy christian lady who had everything going for her. A job in a top shot company with her own office and personal assistant. Her major and only flaw was her dictatorial fiance .Micheal. He was a business man and a choir master in the church they both attended. Her few friends wonder what she saw in him, he dictates what she wears, how she wears them, her friends are not good enough he always says. He finds fault with every thing she does. One fateful evening, Micheal called her and informed her of a three day crusade going on in his neighborhood. She told him she was tired maybe she would attend it tomorrow

Micheal insisted that she should get dressed and come, knowing how persistent he could be she grumpily agreed to attend the crusade that evening.

She quickly showered and got dressed. She picked her car keys and headed out. On the way her car broke down.

She checked her wrist watch and saw that the time was 7.30 pm. She came down from the car and checked the bonnet of the car but couldn't seem to know what was wrong with it. She attempted to re _start the car several times but got frustrated and came out of the car slamming the door angrily.

She stood looking at the car. The car had chosen to break down in a remote area leading to her fiance' s hood. There was no one around she could ask for help so she decided to take a short cut route.

She called Micheal to inform him of the unfortunate development and he advised her to take the short cut route.

She ended the call and was about to walk towards the route when she paused. She thought she heard a sound. She became scared and was about to break into a run when she heard the sound again. This time it was clearer. She stood rooted to the spot in shock unable to believe what she just heard. She mentally willed her legs to move but they refused to comply.

She saw herself moving towards the sound. Its force was greater than her strength, she wanted to flee and put it all behind her. She wanted to pretend she didn't just hear the cry of a baby but the sound of that little helpless voice like a magnet drew her towards the little bush it was coming from.

She walked further, almost breaking into a run following the sound of the little voice. She saw something wrapped in a rags laying in a cartoon. She gently lifted the bundle into her arms. Afraid she might drop him or her.

She looked around but there was no one in sight. She gently placed the bundle on her shoulder and walked as fast as her legs could carry her to Micheal ' s house.

All the way there she wondered if she was doing the right thing. She knew nothing about babies, she doesn't even know who the one she held belonged to or why the mother dumped the poor thing in the first place. A sudden dark thought popped into her head and she tried desperately to push it back to where ever it had come from. What if she was arrested and accused of murdering the mother and stealing the baby. No that's just too dark a thought.

The gateman opened the gate for her, looking at the child sleeping soundly on her shoulder with curiosity shining in his eyes but he dared not ask. Speaking or even thinking of speaking to his boss' s woman would be the end of his employment.

He opened the gate for her and went back to his little room. Amaka was about to search for Micheal 's keys in her handbag when she remembered that she had left them at home. She thought of asking the gate man if he had a spare key. Just the thought of it sent a chill down her spine. Micheal would have a fit if he knows she dallied (his word)with his help.

She brought out her phone and sent him text messages. Asking him to hurry back that she was at his place. She waited for his reply but when none came, she dialed his number, she heard it rang for some minutes before she saw number busy on the screen of her phone.

The baby whimpered and she patted it on the back. She sat down on the door steps and waited for her Fiance to come. He would know what to do.

At 9.30 pm, Micheal drove in to the compound. She kept up happily. He would do the right thing she thought. He knows the right steps to be taken in this situation.

She walks towards him but stopped short at the expression on his face as he stepped out of the car. She didn't give him a chance. She hurriedly told him what happened.

He looked at her like she had grown four heads. He walked towards her, and she stepped back in fright. " Take that thing back to wherever you picked it from!" She didn't understand. She thought maybe she didn't hear him well but he continued angrily " Take that filthy thing in your hand back to whoever you picked it from or we are done!"

She couldn't believe her ears. How could he be so cruel and unfeeling, she knew he never made an idle threat. She was 34, all her siblings are happily married with kids. She couldn't afford to do anything to jeopardize her relationship with Micheal.

She was torn. She could easily race back and dump the baby where she picked him from or she could try to help the baby and then what? She owe this child nothing! She wants to be addressed as a Mrs too but what did the bible say about helping others?

Micheal walked past her almost knocking her down. He opened his door and slammed it heavily the sound woke the sleeping baby. The poor thing cried out loud. Amaka stood there uncertain what to do next. To take the baby back to the dump or try to help and risk losing Micheal?

Amaka went to pick her car from the mechanic and drove to her church. She carried her sleeping child from the back seat. She ignored the secretary who stood glaring at her. She entered the Pastor' s office after a soft knock and was surprised to see Micheal seated. He stood up and gave her a peck. She was taken aback, he had even greeted her warmly and called her ' dear'.

" Welcome sister Amaka" Pastor said warmly. " The orphanage is at lekki we should be there by 7 pm".

" Sweetheart shall we?"

She looked from the Pastor to Micheal. Is this the right thing to do? " I want to keep her''.

" What?" Chorused both her pastor and fiance in surprise.

" Sister Amaka please give us a moment ". Pastor said. She walked out of the office in exasperation.

" Bro Micheal why are you so set against her keeping the child"

" If Amaka cannot obey me now, how will she be when i marry her?women should be submissive and do as they are told! i don't want anything that will put even a blemish on my person! How anyone would keep a child whose back ground they know nothing of baffles me! that child could have been sired by a mad man! Or brought into this world by a wh0re!" .

Pastor knew it was getting beyond his control. He knew the right thing to do but he was afraid of offending Micheal. Maybe he could try to convince Amaka to let go of the child. He called her in. " Sister Amaka you have to listen to me! can your pastor lead you astray? am telling you what the lord told me! you have to take the child to an orphanage. "

For the first time in three years Amaka saw through her pastor, She knew he was indebted to Micheal but she never imagined that the grip Micheal had on the man was this tight. How could he advise her to take the child to the orphanage just to please Micheal.

" Amaka if you insist on keeping that thing then am done with you!" Micheal spat out angrily.

She removed her engagement ring and placed it on the pastor' s desk. She thanked them both and went out of the office. The pastor closed his eyes as guilt assailed him.

Mrs Kalu stood at the threshold of her house, she was a beautiful light skinned woman in her fifties. Her daughter had called her few minutes ago, her voice was muffled with tears as she related the events of the past days to her. Amaka drove into the compound and parked her car.

Her mother walked to her and she flew into her arms sobbing. Her mother soothed her and carried her grandchild from the back seat. The beautiful child was asleep on the back seat and she wondered how the poor thing hadn't topple to the ground during the drive. She was glad they were both alright.

With the help of her father' s connection and her mother' love and support she was able to adopt the little girl and she named her rose.

***************************************************

Amaka sprawled on the ground playing with Rose when a knock sounded on her door. Rose' s nanny was on leave so they were both alone in the house. She had resumed work and was coping with motherhood and career.

" Who is it? Please come in".

She was stunned when she saw who it was. She flew into his arms happily. Oh Johnson. Her childhood best friend! the only man she had ever truly loved! She was heartbroken when he disappeared without a word right after their youth service. She had refused to eat for days until her mother spoke some senses into her. How did he find her?.

" You are welcome Johnson, please sit down. " She had to keep calm. " What can i offer you?"

" A glass of water or juice is fine"

Amaka went to the kitchen and returned with a tray of water and juice which she placed in front of him. She picked up her baby and sat on the sofa opposite him.

" Amie she is yours right?" He asked with a sadness in his eyes. " You are married?"

" Yes she is mine, her name is Rose but i am not married. How about you?"

He sipped his juice with gladness in his heart. " She is beautiful".

" Thank you " Amaka beamed at him.

" I was married but i lost my wife to cancer three years ago, we have a son, his name is Jason".

" Oh! sorry for your loss Johnson. How is your son holding up? What a terrible thing!"

" He has adjusted fine, in the beginning it was hard on the both of us but with time he became used to her absence." He took a sip of the water in front of him." So many things has happened in the last ten years Amie, am sorry i left without telling you."

" Why ? why did you leave without telling me?"

" I left because of you. I was in love with you but we were from separate classes and i was afraid my love alone wasn't enough, i felt unworthy of your love so i decided to go in search of greener pastures, come back to ask for your hand when i find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow but life doesn't always go as planned. Am sorry Amie."

She closed her eyes." How could you think your love alone wasn't enough?. I was in love with you too".

" Am sorry Amie" he whispered. " Am still in love with you."

A Year Later

Micheal dragged his pregnant wife out of his apartment. Wh0re! he went back inside to bring out her Echolac boxes and flung them out. He had been having an affair with her for almost of the two years he was engaged to Amaka and she decided to hook him with pregnancy immediately he called off his engagement. She was just like the rest of them, they don't know when to keep their mouth shut and they were not submissive enough.

Silvia picked up her bags crying. She wondered why Pastor had asked her to marry this monster. In the first few months of their marriage he had taken to giving her a back hand slap or two but it slowly escalated into blows and Punch's. She had become a prisoner in her matrimonial home, she wasn't allowed to visit even her own parents or talk to anyone both at church and at home. Micheal came out of the apartment angrily and pushed her to the ground.

" What are you still doing here!? " He dragged her on the ground towards the gate. He took hold of her silk nightie and tore it into two. She had dared to invite her friend to his house, she had flaunted his orders and he was done with her.

" Musa! Open the gate ". He bellowed.

Musa hurriedly opened the gate and Micheal threw her outside and ordered Musa to lock the gate. Some good Samaritan gave Silvia a wrapper to cover herself and she trekked to her pastor' s office. He was writing his sermon for Sunday when she barged into his office.

" What happened Sister Silvia? he did this to you again? " the woman before him was the shadow of his beautiful secretary. He had encouraged her to Marry Bro Micheal so that he would still be a member of his church. He had been afraid he would marry from another church so he had encouraged Silvia when he failed to use Amaka to keep him in his church.

Silvia slumped on the floor crying, he tried to lift her up but shrank back in fright when he saw blood rushing down her thighs. He rushed out of the office to hail a taxi. When he rushed back in with the cabbie Silvia' s stiff body was in her pool of blood. The cabbie checked her pulse and ran out of the office. No way he would put a dead body into his cab.

***************************************************

Amaka walked into her new spacious office. She had been promoted after giving a wonderful presentation. The foreign investors were so impressed and continued clapping long after she had finished her presentation. Who said you can't cope with motherhood and a career. You can! when you have a loving and a supportive husband. She picked up the framed photograph on her desk smiling. She looked so beautiful in her wedding gown, Johnson stood beside her carrying Rose in his arms while Jason held her hand grinning. She felt blessed. Yes she was blessed. Johnson had moved back to Nigeria and started his law firm. Her pastor had called her some days ago to tell her Micheal was cooling his heels in the prison for the murder of his wife Silvia.

Silvia' s uncle, an army general was pulling every string he could to make sure Micheal rots in prison. The pastor had even apologized to her and she had forgiven him. She prays Micheal get a second chance. Her IPhone rang and she smiled when she saw who the caller was.

" Baby am picking you for lunch "

She smiled. Johnson was always picking her up for lunch when she could easily grab a bite at the company cafeteria. She placed her hand on tummy. a new life was growing inside her, she marveled at how wonderful God is.

" Hmmn big boy, You are spoiling me o."

He laughed heartily." If i don't spoil my baby, who will?". They both laughed again." Baby my mom want Rose and Jason to spend the weekend with her, i love our kids but it would be nice to have the bed all to ourselves this week."

Amaka laughed again. Johnson' s mother was a very sweet lady and she dotes on both kids.

" See you soon Amie love".

" See ya baby ".

The end.

P.s check out my other stories, The devil has the money and Allen Avenue. I welcome your criticism as it would make me a better writer.
