May the God of Olympic that visited us in Atlanta 20years ago just take a slight stroll down below the equator and be with us in Rio de Janeiro!

PROFILE: NIGERIA
Olympic Record
Nigeria became the first African side to win the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament in 1996 with their fabled ‘Dream Team’. A side that included Celestine Babayaro, Taribo West, Nwankwo Kanu, Jay Jay Okocha and Sunday Oliseh defied the odds in Athens, Georgia thanks to dramatic late winners; Kanu grabbed a golden goal in their semi-final against Brazil while Emmanuel Amuneke fired the decisive strike in the 90th minute of the gold medal match against Argentina. The Albiceleste would have their revenge in 2008 though, with a Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria-inspired side consigning the latest incarnation of the ‘Dream Team’ to silver in their sixth, and most recent, Olympics appearance.

The Road to Rio
The 1996 winners entered qualification for the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations at the final play-off stage, where they defeated Congo 2-1 over two legs, with Junior Ajayi grabbing both of the goals for ‘Dream Team VI’. In the tournament proper, they finished second in Group B on goal difference behind fellow Olympians Algeria, courtesy of an Ajayi-inspired victory against Mali and draws against Egypt and Les Verts. A single Etebo Oghenekaro strike saw off the finals hosts Senegal in the semi-final to book their tickets to Rio, and finished the tournament in style by defeating Algeria 2-1 in the final.

Former stars
Nwankwo Kanu, Jay Jay Okocha, Sunday Oliseh (1996), Victor Obinna, Peter Odemwingie and Victor Anichebe (2008).

The stat
10 – No African side has won more Men’s Olympic Football Tournament games than Nigeria. Despite Egypt also winning ten matches, they have done so in 32 attempts to the Super Eagles’ 25.

PROFILE: JAPAN

Olympic Record
Japan’s best showing at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament came at Mexico 1968, some 32 years after their opening appearance, where they grabbed a medal, seeing off the hosts in the decisive battle for the bronze. Kunishige Kamamoto grabbed seven goals on Japan’s way to third place, seeing him top the scoring charts as Shunichiro Okano’s side helped eliminate Brazil and France. They almost matched that showing at London 2012, notably seeing off Spain in the group stages, but were defeated 2-0 by Asian rivals Korea Republic at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in the bronze medal match.

The Road to Rio
Japan dominated their qualifying group for the AFC U-23 Championship, dispatching Macau, Vietnam and Malaysia with ease by scoring ten goals across the three matches without conceding. They continued that good form into the final tournament, winning all three pool games to top Group B and progress to the quarter-finals. They left it late in the knockout stages, needing extra time to get past Iran in the last eight before a dramatic stoppage time winner saw off Iraq in the semi-final and booked their ticket to Rio. The Samurai Blue went on to claim the continental title, coming from two goals down to win the final 3-2 against Korea Republic.

Former stars
Kunishige Kamamoto (1964, 1968), Masashi Watanabe (1964, 1968), Kensuke Nagai (2012), Yuki Otsu (2012)

The stat
10 appearances at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament for Japan, Rio 2016 included. No side in Asia has qualified for more, with fellow Rio qualifiers Korea Republic also on ten.

I wish them whatever they wish themselves. I no fit Cary cardiac because of one yeye unorganized body where every body play with ulterior motives. I lost interest in the tournament already when the likes of iheanacho, success and the arsenal guy pulled out, same way Mikel pulled out if the last one cos he has something better to do now the kante has arrived did Nigeria beg Chelsea before Mikel reach Brazil? No one is playing for pride.

I always wish we could have a star studded team like we had for USA 94. That team make sense scatter, na just our inexperience finish us. It was a team that could win the world cup anyday anytime.
