You might be right to a certain extent. Battery lifetime has been a major problem with all android phones: the lifetime of a battery charge has to do with the usage.

Probably You bought the cloned version.there are so many cloned xperia out there. Xperia z2 for instance has one of the best battery backup among Android phones. With moderate use, you can get 2days and with heavy usage a day and a half. Sony xperia high end phones are among the top best smart phone in the market.
If you must go for xperia,then go for the premium ones.
