Everytime we hear of how a Nairalander killed a snake or how a snake was found in the house of somebody. Well, have we ever thought of how to prevent the snakes from coming around?

From wikihow.com, I learnt that while some snakes can actually be beneficial to a garden, there are understandable reasons why a homeowner might be apprehensive enough about these slithering companions to keep them away. The best way to keep snakes away is to remove anything that might invite them to your yard or home in the first place.

Here are the steps.

1. Learn more about the snakes in your area.

Certain snakes are indigenous to certain regions, and some are more dangerous than others. Garter snakes can actually be helpful to a garden and tend to stay away from people. Other snakes, like rattlesnakes, are more dangerous and are best to keep out of the yard. Knowing the sort of snakes you are likely to find can help ease your anxieties about the necessity of keeping snakes away or may make you more aware of how important the action is.
Moreover, while snake behavior is generally the same across the board, some preferred hiding spots and food sources do vary slightly from species to species. Knowing which types of snakes to focus your efforts on will help you to focus your snake repelling efforts more effectively.

2. Keep your yard free of clutter. Clutter (a collection of things lying about in an untidy mass.) is essentially an open invitation to snakes because it provides a warm, dark place for them to hide. Piles of leaves, compost piles, straw mulch, wood chip mulch, stacks of firewood, and piles of cut grass are all comfortable places that snakes like to hide in, so these should be removed from your yard.

3. Avoid tall-growing plants. Just like clutter, certain shrubs and other plants provide the perfect hiding spot for a neighborhood snake. Keeping your grass mowed is a good way to prevent snakes from slithering around your yard. Shrubs and packed gardens with thick plants will also attract snakes. If you are very concerned about a potential snake problem, remove or thin these plants out. If you want to keep these plants, however, consider transplanting them to the far side of your yard, away from the foundation of your house.

4. Remove ground-level water sources. Some snakes are actually drawn to water and can even be caught taking a swim, making ground-level sources of water very attractive. Large puddles should be drained before they attract any uninvited guests and ponds should be positioned away from the house and monitored for snake problems, as well. Even bird baths can cause a problem because they attract insects and rodents that, in turn, attract snakes.

5. Get rid of any pest problems. Snakes are attracted to locations with plentiful food sources. If you have a problem with mice or large insects, like grasshoppers and roaches, your odds of having a snake problem also increase. Try laying traps or spraying repellents designed to keep these pests away from your house, and the snakes should stay away as well. You could also try getting a cat or small dog that will chase the majority of pests away.

Patch up any holes.
If you have spotted snakes in your yard and are worried about keeping them out of your house, the best thing you can do is locate and repair any holes in your foundation, garage, or screen doors. Carefully inspect these areas and if you notice any holes, no matter how small, patch them up immediately. Even holes as small as a quarter are large enough for certain types of garter snakes to squeeze through.

7.Sprinkle sulfur powder around your home. This solution is more myth than fact, but some swear by it regardless. Whether the smell of sulfur repels snakes or simply repels the rodents and insects that snakes feed on, a small sprinkling of sulfur powder might prove effective at keeping snakes from sneaking in. These solutions are best not to use if you have small children or pets around the house, though, because they can be hazardous or even fatal if consumed.

8. Create vibrations. If you have spotted snakes in your garden or yard in the past, and suspect that a few might be hiding in there even now, run the lawn mower or tiller around the area before working in it. You do not want to push the mower or tiller through the area, because the idea is not to kill the snakes but simply to scare them off. The vibrations produced by these machines are usually enough to warn and frighten off many snakes, especially common garter snakes.

9. Apply chemical repellent. There are commercial snake repellents you can buy from online and from home improvement or garden stores. Some repellents are more effective against some species than others, so it is important that you do your research before purchasing one. Additionally, these repellents can also be dangerous for people, other animals, and the environment. To reduce the associated risks, carefully read the label and follow the directions precisely as you apply the chemical.

10. Put up snake proof fencing. The effectiveness of snake proof fencing might depend on the type of snake you have in your area and how it commonly travels, but there are specialized types of fencing that have proved effective against many types of snakes. You can look into constructing a snake-proof fence yourself, or you can hire a professional to do it for you.

11. Lay traps. If you suspect that you already have a snake, or are worried about any snakes that might have snuck in before you took measures to repel them, you can set up mechanical traps or glue traps in your basement or garage. Before setting these traps up, though, you should contact your local animal control officer or state wildlife agency to make sure that the procedure is done safely and legally.

Lastly,

Warnings

If dealing with venomous snakes, you might want to contact professionals from the start. Handling poisonous snakes is a dangerous action that could result in a snakebite and a hospital visit. For that reason, it is often best left to professionals.

Do not use mothballs to deter snakes. Not only are they toxic if consumed by pets or kids, but it is also illegal to use them to deter snakes. Mothballs are pesticides registered by the EPA. As such, they must be used as indicated on the label. Any off-label use is a violation of Federal law. No mothball product is registered for this use.
