In a "modern society" like we want to be, keeping to traditions from bygone eras just raises eyebrows:

- we are not entirely sure it's fair to a 16-17 year old to decide her life for her
- some men will insist on impregnating and keeping the girl at home, preventing her from a potential, fulfilling, career
- underaged pregnancy is currently being linked to increased rates of incontinence and other reproductive issues
- did the young girl agree to being a widow at 35? Maybe not in Sanusi's case, but chances are these men in their 60s and 70s won't make it past 80

The notion of early marriage might have made sense in agrarian times, when life expectancy was about 45 years, and women needed to give birth as often and early as possible, to deal with high infant mortality rates. There was little need back then to educate a girl (and indeed boys too) through to university to gain the skills, knowlege and skills needed for a high tech society. Our ancestors adapted culture to fit the existing circumstances. We owe it to them to adapt the culture they gave us to fit the new circumstances.
