The Nigerian PC market is heavily dominated by Windows PCs, with HP Windows PCs taking the lead. Google has launched out into the PC/Operating system market with the Chromebook. Chromebooks are personal computers that run on Google Chrome OS (Operating System). You may not have used one before, but you could love to use one because they surely offer you some advantages you may not get elsewhere. Here are some features of Chromebooks you could love:

Generally light-weighted: Chromebooks are generally light-weighted, they are given extremely simple designs to allow them weigh as light as possible, so you won’t have to develop muscles lifting Chromebooks. Chromebooks are wallet-friendly laptops that are both quirky and smart, low-impact and capable.

Budget friendly: Most Chromebooks are generally cheap, especially when you compare them with their Windows and iOS counterparts. They are good for students as their prices are student friendly. One of the reasons for its cheap price is that Google offers the Chrome OS for free unlike Microsoft Windows that charges some fee for Windows license. For example, Acer’s Chrome powered Chromebook 14 looks a lot like Apple’s iconic MacBook Air but only costs less than NGN60,000 which is a fraction of MacBook’s price while also providing you with a feature set comparable to its Windows rivals. There should always be a Chromebook within your budget!

Diverse sizes: Chromebooks comes in different sizes and shapes. Sizes of screens ranging from “11.6” to as much as “15.6” diagonal size. This means you have a range of pocket friendly options to choose from, all offering you quality display depending on the specs of the PC.

Software compatibility: This seems to be the sweetest feature of Chromebooks. You can run all your android apps on Chromebooks. You have access to millions of apps available on Google playstore, you could download and install whichever one you want to. By default, Chromebooks are loaded with Chrome OS rather than say, Windows 10 but with the help of CrossOver for Android, Chromebooks can run Windows software. CrossOver for Android is a commercial project made by CodeWeavers. It takes code from the Wine open-source project that allows Windows applications to run on Linux and Mac OS X, and adapts it to Android. CrossOver for Android is not out yet, but stable Android application support for Chromebooks is not out either. When it is, CrossOver will provide a way to run Windows software directly on Chrome OS. This may not be a perfect way to run all Windows software, but it’s a way to run a lot of software, and new features like DirectX 11 support are being worked on. Yet, according to CodeWeavers, CrossOver for Android now works on the Chromebook Pixel (2015) and Acer Chromebook R11, both of which were produced with Intel chips. Those devices both just received Android app support. CrossOver doesn’t work on the Asus Chromebook Flip, which uses an ARM chip.

Durability: Chromebooks employ mostly low-power processors and low-end HD screens starting at 1,366 x 768 pixel count, but are designed to last. Almost every Chromebook boosts between 7 and 9 hours of battery life depending on power settings and usage, unlike in Windows PCs that are normally designed with batteries that last an average of 4-6 hours. Moving up with even more powerful CPU, better display and more memory further increases these margins. Which is exactly what the HP Chromebook 14 did with 16GB of RAM and a QHD+ display.

Full function: Chromebooks offer full functions you can access on a PC such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Word editing, data processing amongst many other useful functions.

Summary: Chromebooks are here to stay, and they seem to continue improving as the days go by. You could try one out to see for yourself.
