Okay I have been away for Long been working on our transition from foreign to local feed with the help of a Nairalander here @Ttalk who is a specialist in formulating local feeds we have acquired the machine and the skill required to be producing our feed inhouse.

The cost of buying foreign feed aquamax for example is #6,500 6mm for a 15kg bag which means 1kG = #433.33 if my fishes eat 10 tonne of feed which means I would spend 10,000 X 433.33 which is 4,333,000 that is what I would have to spend to hit that amount.

Now with reduced cost we can actually make local sinking feed at #250 naira per kg which means if my fishes eat 10 tonne of feeds I would spend
10,000 X 250 = 2,500,000 which is relatively fair. even though it has its disadvantages.

Do you mind sharing some of the disadvantages. Do you use the waste water from your pond for anything?

Disadvantages:
1. You dont get to see the fish eat so You might not know when they are saturated as the feed is sinking some might go to waste.
2. If the feed is not all that compact it would dissolve before reaching the bottom and pollute the water, thereby reducing dissolved oxygen.

The waste water can be used for irrigation for crop farming but currently I do not use it for anything.

SInce we switched to local food at two months we have been feeding only two times daily so as to reduce water pollution and local feed takes time to digest. we feed early morning and at night during the afternoon we give them a snack to nibble on which is an alternative to feed.

Offal: This is the most important of all complementary feed for catfish. It is one of the foremost feed used by catfish farmers in late nineties to feed their fishes. Sometimes in early nineties, offals and other internal organs of poultry are treated as waste product and often dumped at the outskirt of the town where they are produced. Following the discovery of this waste as an alternative feed for catfish, value was placed on offals and it became an important complementary feed for catfish. Sometimes they are sold above the price of pellets.
You can feed your fish with offals and other internal organs of chicken just like we do, but do not buy when the cost is too much (above N70 per kg). Be careful not to feed your fishes with other waste like gloves disposed alongside with offals to avoid mortality and also try to boil it so as to reduce transference of disease from cattle or poultry to fish.

You could also construct an industrial pond or trampoline pond, which can be dismantled and set up whenever you want to change location

Kaykaymil, Good day, please i will like those videos and materials sent to my mail: biggie1o2@yahoo.com. My fish farm was flooded in Asaba and i lost almost all my fishes. any way this was due to the negligence of the farm caretaker. i intend to start anew and i will need to equip myself with the vital info necessary because i oversee this farm remotely as i am based in lagos.

Thanks so much for the useful info you have helped us with in this thread

Hello sir, I would love it if you send me the materials and videos too.
Also, I plan to go into this project in either Abeokuta or Igboora (where I see correct land sha). I don't know why, I think I prefer the concrete and movable ponds to the earthen pond.
Sir, what are the advantages and disadvantages of these ponds? I plans to start small with about 4000 juveniles to learn the rudiments of fish farming actually.
Thanks and regards.

40 ft by 40 ft, 4ft deep and we are doing smoking size if You do the calculation each fish would still have a 2 square meter spacing which is necessary for their growth. Thanks and fear not bro Jesus is Lord

Please to clearify sir. Is the 40 ft by 40ft, 4ft deep earthen pond #40,000? I am confused about the cost of earthen ponds. Thanks

I weighed my fishes before transitioning today I weighed about 30 and too the average at two months and they weigh 0.3kg on the average after eating foreign food for 8weeks I stopped at 6MM because they were draining a borehole in my pocket
.

@ Kaykaymil, thanks for sharing your experience with us, my first farming wasnt successful because of some mistakes in the cause of renting a earthen pond (i.e not told the truth about the pond area during raining season) which makes flood to swept away close to 3700 fishes out of 4000pcs after 1 and half month from Fingerlings. (wasting money on Coppens and skretting before changing to local feed).
Your assistance will be highly appreciated if the material can be sent to me (gloriousfarms@hotmail.com).
Thanks in advance.
