Why do people name their children after the nation Isreal and not after other nations like Nigeria, America, Sudan, Japan etc. Cos I'm yet to come across or hear of any person(s) bearing the names of other nations. What's the big deal about the nation Isreal.

Nigerians name their kids Israel because :

1. It contains 6 letter words.

2. It starts with an I and end with L

3. It starts with a vowel and end with a consonant.

These are the reasons.

Because Isreal means 'may God prevail or God perseveres/contends' and Nigerians being very religious people always like to outwardly show that they are religious even though a lot of them are far worse than they make people believe. So naming children Isreal is a way to show some level religiousness and then hope that God will come and train the child for them while they live life like say nothing dey happen.

Israel is the name of a historical figure and a nation was named after him. Some other countries names are also names of people; Saudi Arabia, Swaziland, Columbia, America, Bolivia etc.

In other words, "Nigeria" is not blessed and chosen. Is that so?

Frontpage bound.
Would've answered but others've already done the question justice so I'd make do with the second part. OP people name their children Jordan, it's also the name of a place. Don't know if it has bible connotations or just a name they learned from watching foreign media.

Dame Flora Shaw, Lady Lugard

google this name, you will get ur answer there.

Nigeria was originated from these two words. Niger-Area, meaning area full with rivers, this is the handiwork of the colonial masters.

But Israel was named by God
this passage will help you understand more:

One night, Jacob was attacked by a celestial being. They wrestled all night, and in the morning, seeing he could not prevail, Jacob’s assailant agreed to bless Jacob in return for a truce, and gave him a new name: “Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.” (Genesis 32:28)
