OK but since you have such a great health sector, why should anybody fly away to southafrica for treatment when it's easier to get treated in Kenya? since you guys believe Buhari travelled out due to Nigerian poor health sector, that was the genesis of this arguement from Muafrika anyway.
Note even if kibaki was former president, he was still like an ambassador or well respected representative of the country.
He was an embarrassment.

I've noticed something about Nigerians. They give birth in Europe or US. Is it a verdict on the health sector or is it just citizenship opportunities? undecided I heard GO. Adeboye once say how a couple flew out to give birth because they could not risk. How risky is it delivering in a Nigerian hospital?

Debate on Kenya's health care heats up
News | 2 March 2017, 05:56am
Tom Mboya

Governor Nderitu Gachagua of Nyeri County died in London last week; a daughter of opposition leader Raila Odinga was flown to a South African hospital for further treatment; the doctors’ strike entered the third month and all this gave Kenyans a hot topic for debate on the country’s ailing medical care.

As stories appear in the news media daily of people who have died due to lack of medical attention, the debate now swirls around the rich and the politically connected who can board a plane at the drop of a hat for specialised treatment abroad, while talks to bring the striking doctors back to work have achieved nothing.

Nyeri governor Gachagua died aged 64 at the Royal Marsden hospital in London, UK last week Friday from pancreatic cancer, an illness that saw him admitted in that country for two months in 2015. Rigathi Gachagua, the late county chief's brother, said he had been sick for about two years. The body is to be buried in Kenya next week Monday.

This kicked up a storm and as usual Kenyans took to social media, debating the death. The consensus seemed to be that the country’s leaders needed to invest in better health care locally which could be accessed by both the high and mighty and the common man.

Even before the uproar died down, Rosemary Odinga, who many see as being poised to take over her father’s political empire very soon, was admitted into a Nairobi hospital last weekend for a swelling in the head. She was later flown to a South African hospital for surgery to remove a brain tumour.

Julius Kinara, a Kenyan living in the United States, argued that this was the right time for Kenyans to debate on the status of the health care system available to them in public institutions.

“If indeed it is true, that Rosemary has been flown out of the country for treatment, I wish her quickest recovery. However, as a country we need some serious soul searching when addressing the quality of the health care system in Kenya. More so, when those in power and those seeking power, or held power before, have not addressed the fundamental structural delivery, access, quality and cost of health care in Kenya. In the grand scheme of things, we are all humans, born with same strengths and frailty, we all get sick and sooner or later, die,” he said.

This is not the first time Kenyans are debating the health care system in juxtaposition to the behaviour of their leaders.

Last year, the governor of Bomet in the west of Kenya, Isaac Rutto surprised many when after his nose was hit in a confrontation with anti-riot police at a political rally, he was airlifted for care to a Nairobi hospital before being flown to South Africa for specialised treatment. For a fractured nose.
This is how it happened. Rutto was involved in a scuffle with supporters of his opponent. Within minutes he left the melee with a broken nose. He had an Elastoplast to prove it. Within the hour he was airlifted to Nairobi for specialised medical attention and after two days he was evacuated to South Africa for treatment.

All the while there is a doctors’ strike in Kenya’s public hospitals with deaths reported.

Then came the turn of retired president Mwai Kibaki, who confirmed the rich Kenyans' unending love for South African health care. He was airlifted to South Africa in August last year for medical attention. “He was finance and health minister, vice-president and president for 10 years. He failed to improve health care,” fired off one of Kenya’s most controversial activists, Bonface Mwangi.

Mwangi’s argument gained traction on social media as many people castigated Kibaki and other political leaders for not doing enough to improve standards in the public health system.

Although the family would not say what was ailing the former head of state, local media said Kibaki had suffered a stroke and had been rushed to the Karen Hospital, owned by his personal doctor Dan Gikonyo before he was airlifted to South Africa. Kibaki’s health scare came as the country commemorated the 13th anniversary of the death of Wamalwa Kijana, who served as Kibaki’s vice-president in his first term in office.

And Wamalwa too died at the Royal Free Hospital in London.

As for now, the well-heeled will keep their passports ready for any emergency medical evacuation while their not so blessed compatriots will do with some more prayers that the doctors go back to work soon.

In 2015, that quota translated to $17 million for South Africa and $16,96 million for Nigeria.
Knowing who doesn't pay amongst the lower tiers is not straightforward, as the AU is reluctant to name and shame. Africa in Fact's request to the AU secretariat in October 2016 for payment records did not receive a response.

However, recent figures from the Centre for Citizens' Participation in the African Union, which campaigns for the financing of Africa's integration and development, show that the most indebted were Kenya, Ghana, Libya and Cameroon, as of 30 September 2013.

Other countries in arrears were Niger, Mauritania, Mali, Madagascar, Guinea Bissau, Malawi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cotê d'Ivoire. Kenya owed $3,024 million while Ghana and Cameroon owed $1,3 million and $2,9 million respectively. Only 19 member states had cleared their dues.

So, is it means that they migrated from North Africa a false claim or is it just they first migrated to Senegal from North Africa and then some of them later migrated to other west African states?

Holly the fulanis are believed to be a product of intermixure of ancient west african tribes and berbers, just like the Touaregs, however their black west african genes dominate n they speak a Black west african language unlike the Touaregs with a dominantly berber ancestry, culture n even language.

**** The fulanis can probably be likened to you Habeshas who are a mix between cushitic black africans n immigrant semitic middle-easterners. Except that in the fulani case the black african genes, origin n language dominate n the berbers who form their other ancestry are also 100% africans n not middle-easterners (asians).

Menelik said that for political reasons and the belief that Abyssinians are descendants of Menelik I(son of King Solomon of Israel and Queen of Sheba of Ethiopia).

Good explanation!
How do those Kings/emperors get their income nowadays?
Was the country Benin part of the Benin empire back then?
Was there a plan by the Gov't to eliminate the Kings in the past after the Nigeria became independent?

Kk.

The kings are being paid salaries by the state/federal governments. The kings also receive lots of monetary gifts n kind gestures from their subjects, aspiring politicians n succesful business people who want to get their blessings n support. ....I also think investors, both local/foreign also show them kind gestures, cos these kings usually sometimes have powers n ownership over most/many indigenous lands in their territories.

>>>>No, the country Benin was never part of the Benin empire, buh i think some kingdoms over there like Dahomey kingdom were subjects to Oyo empire (in Nigeria).

••••Heck No! How could the gov't think of such a thing? The British colonial masters recognized our traditional rulers very well even after conquering them and they used these rulers to administrate the people indirectly. More traditional rulers were even created n upheld by the British. So, there was no way we could do without them even after independence.

Nothing to be proud of in those numbers, you see where Indonesia is? That's where we should be. In 2050 Nigeria will be the third most populous country after India and China, do not celebrate mediocrity. We should have an economy larger than Indonesia's at that time if we are to be seen as a success, simply being the biggest in Africa is no longer enough.

News Just in

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 27 – Kenya has been ranked the third most innovative country in sub-Saharan Africa. The United Nations’ Global Innovation Index 2017 places Kenya third after South Africa and Mauritius.
The index which is in its 10th edition surveys some 130 economies using dozens of metrics, from patent filings to education spending providing decision makers a high-level look at the innovative activity that increasingly drives economic and social growth. According to the report, sub-Saharan Africa draws its highest scores in institutions and market sophistication. “Since 2012, sub-Saharan Africa has counted more “innovation achiever” countries than any other region. Kenya, Rwanda, Mozambique, Uganda, Malawi, Madagascar and Senegal stand out for being innovation achievers this year, and several times in the previous years,” the survey indicates. Globally, Switzerland leads the ranking for the seventh consecutive year, followed by Sweden, the Netherlands, the USA and the UK. Kenya is ranked number 80 globally, outperforming her development- level peers. China is the exception at 22, in 2016; China became the first-ever middle-income economy in the top 25. Israel continues to cement its status as a leader of global innovation according to the index. For the seventh consecutive year, Israel topped the innovation index’s category for northern Africa and western Asia. The Jewish state ranked 17th overall in the report’s group of high-income countries, improving its standing by four places from 2016. The Global Innovation Index 2017 is co-published by Cornell University, INSEAD, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO, a specialized agency of the United Nations). “Efforts to bridge the innovation divide have to start with helping emerging economies understand their innovation strengths and weaknesses and create appropriate policies and metrics,” said Soumitra Dutta, Dean, Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, Cornell University. The theme of the GII 2017, “Innovation Feeding the World,” looks at innovation carried out in agriculture and food systems. Over the next decades, the agriculture and food sector will face an enormous rise in global demand and increased competition for limited natural resources. In addition, it will need to adapt to and help mitigate climate change. Innovation is key to sustaining the productivity growth required to meet this rising demand and to helping enhance the networks that integrate the sustainable food production, processing, distribution, consumption, and waste management known as food systems. “We are already witnessing the rapid, worldwide emergence of ‘digital agriculture,’ which includes drones, satellite-based sensors, and field robotics,” said Bruno Lanvin, INSEAD Executive Director for Global Indices. Lanvin noted that there is an urgent need for smart agriculture to optimize supply and distribution chains and foster creative new business models that minimize pressure on land, energy and other natural resources – while addressing the needs of the world’s poorest.

Proof,we've been saying the truth! Didn't we show the same list last year? And weren't we same position? Naijjans, I keep telling you its all REAL!

Exactly, if we can go back to the regional system when we were amongst the fastest growing economies in the world then without oil.
Let the regions control things more and not depend much on oil, you would see even sokoto people would discover their talents and little resources to survive and move ahead.
Unfortunately the oil money enjoyed by the elites might be the reason they don't wanna restructure.

Shaytun, i think this guy here is very correct.

*** By 2050, Nigeria will be approximately 440 million people as the 3rd most populous country in the world. So, going by your GDP estimate, our GDP per capital would be approx. $10,000 n we would still be classified as a middle income economy just the way countries like Brazil are today.
If we cannot catch up or even surpass countries like Indonesia at that time, then i don't think it is worth much celebration, cos even today Indonesia is not so much ahead of Nigeria economically, why should they give us a gap as high as $6 trillion in the future?
