FAB-5 GRASSROOTS SCHOOL FOOTBALL TOURNEY HOLDS ON FRIDAY

Another edition of the grassroots competition which pits together public primary schools in Lagos will hold on on Lagos Island

The final of the FAB-5 Football Challenge, an Under-13 5-a-side football competition for public schools in Lagos State, will take place on May 26, 2017 at the Campos Mini Stadium to coincide with the Children’s Day celebrations.

This year’s competition screened schools from the state’s five educational districts. 16 schools will participate in the final tournament that will see the winners receive prizes including the opportunities for the best outstanding players to be enrolled in the FCBarcelona Soccer School in Lagos.

The Lagos State Sports Commission has thrown its weight behind the competition this year as it fits into the vision of growing domestic sport.

“The LSSC is supporting FAB-5 with the logistics that they require to pull off the competition because we believe in creating opportunities for young people across our state to show their talent and be discovered,” said Deji Tinubu, chairman of the LSSC.

Started in 2012, Fab-5 has received participation of more than 2000 pupils from over 200 public primary schools spread across Lagos State. Twin brothers Taiwo and Kehinde Rahmon, who were discovered at the maiden tournament in 2012 and have benefited from the Scholarship and Mentoring programme are now currently playing in the Lagos Principals Cup 2017.

Despite its success, organisers of FAB-5 have continued to reach out to corporate partners and encourage them to support such domestic and grassroot sports to ensure deliverables and proper running of the lofty project.

“We continue to reach out to private organisations to support our grassroots initiatives and sports in general in order to assist the development of our young people,” Dare Amokeodo, Project Manager of Pet-Bamok Limited, organisers of the event.

“It is not enough to admire the successes of Anthony Joshua, Dele Alli, Alex Iwobi and many other Nigerians in diaspora, we need to invest in our own young people at home and create an environment where they can thrive and excel like their counterparts in developed countries.''

The Fab-5 2017 tournament is also supported by the Blaugrana Sports International, Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), RiteFoods, Bigi & Indomie Noodles.

COPA COCA-COLA AKURE REGIONAL FINALS WRAP: EDO & KOGI WIN BIG

The boys from Delta are the whipping boys at the Akure regional finals after conceding 13 goals in two games at the Aquinas College, Akure

EDO 7-0 DELTA

Niger College, Edo revived their chances of reaching the 2017 Copa Coca Cola national champions with an emphatic 7-0 victory over Urhobo College, Delta state on match day two of the secondary schools championship at the Aquinas College, Akure on Friday.

A brace from Imade Vincent, and one goal each from Towoh Eventus, Salami Jeremiah, Efe Ugiadbe and Ernest Addeah handed the boys from Benin their first victory at the Akure regional finals.

Salami Jeremiah opened scoring for Ogieriakhi Austin side through a spot kick, while Efe Ugiadbe, Ernest Addeah and Imade Vincent grabbed four more goals to wrap up the first half of the game.

With five goals advantage, the Benin boys resumed the second half of the game pressing for more, as the boys from Delta were overwhelmed by their opponent all through the game, with Bright Isaac grabbing his side's sixth goal of the game.

The Edo boys wrapped up their victory with another spot kick from Towo Eventus in the late minutes of the game, while the efforts of the Delta boys produced no meaningful result.

They will now hope to claim their first victory in their second game on Friday against Government Day Secondary School, Kogi who also drew their first game against Brightville College, Oyo on Thursday.

OSUN 1-1 OYO

Progress Comprehensive High School, Osun remain unbeaten in the ongoing Copa Coca Cola regional finals at the Aquinas College, Akure after playing a 1-1 draw against Brightville College, Oyo in their second match on Friday.

Ojo Sunday opened scoring for the Modakeke boys in the early minutes of the game following a mix up from the back line of the Ibadan boys, but Victor Okeleke’s equalizer in the first half prevented Osun from claiming their second win in the region.

Having played a 1-1 draw in the first half, Brightville resumed the second half with so much intensity as their search for their first win continued, but their efforts failed to produce desired results for them.

Mid-way into the second half of the game, the boys from Ibadan took the lead for the first time in the game but the goal was cancelled due to an infringement in the buildup and their hopes of winning their first game was postponed till their next game.

KOGI 6-0 DELTA

Government Day Secondary School, Kogi claimed their first victory at the ongoing regional finals of the 2017 Copa Coca Cola U15 tournament following their 6-0 emphatic win over Urhobo College, Delta on Friday afternoon.

A brace each from both Hussain Yaya and Hassan Yaya and one goal apiece from the duo of Bellpo Isiaka and Suleiman Mohammed ensured the Kogi boys cruised to their first victory after two games.

Coming from a 0-0 draw against Brightville College, Oyo in their first game on Thursday afternoon, Hussain Yaya opened scoring for the boys from Government Day School through a well-taken freekick from the left hand side of the field, and barely 60 seconds after, Suleiman Muhammed doubled the lead for the Kogi boys after a fine build up from the midfield.

Efforts from the Delta state boys to pull one back before the close of the first half of the game yielded no tangible result, but instead conceded their third goal courtesy Hassan Yaya’s fine finish to wrap the first stanza of the game up.

On return from the break, Hussain Yaya scored his side’s fourth goal to complete his brace for the game, and shortly after, his brother, Hassan Yaya also grabbed his brace to put the score line at five goals to nothing.

Bello Isiaka finally put his name on the scorer’s sheet after many attempt to complete his side 6-0 thrashing of their opponent from Delta state.

They have now gathered three points from two games, and with two games left to play, they will be hoping they can grab maximum points and claim the national finals ticket available for the Akure center.

EDO 1-0 OYO

Imade Vincent’s second half goal was all Niger College; Edo needed to claim their second victory at the ongoing Copa Coca Cola U15 regional finals at the Aquinas College Akure on Friday evening.

The Benin boys defeated 10-man Brightville College, Oyo 1-0 on Friday evening to brighten their chances of reaching the national finals of the championship after bouncing back from their shaky starts in the regional finals on Thursday.

Coming back from a 1-0 defeat to Progress Comprehensive High School, Osun, the Edo boys thrashed Delta state representatives 7-0 in their second game on Friday morning and then edged the boys from Ibadan 1-0 in their third game.

COPA COCA-COLA KANO WRAP: ZAMFARA INCH NEARER NATIONAL FINALS

Coach Ibrahim Buhari’s boys brightened their chances of booking a ticket to Lagos with two wins on Friday

ZAMFARA 1-0 JIGAWA
Abba Muhammed scored the winning goal for Sambo Secondary School in the second half of a 1-0 win over Adamu Maje Junior School, Jigawa.

The winger was making his debut in the national finals, and his first real contribution lifted the roof off Aminu Kano College turf when his effort beat goalkeeper Faisal Sabi’u in goal.

Adamu Maje looked set to enhance their performance for a place in the national finals but Abba Jubril and Adamu Muhammed spoiled their determined attacking display, but their Zamfara based school capitalised on their toothless performance to cruise to victory.

KATSINA 1-0 SOKOTO

GSSS College, Sokoto lost their first game of the regional finals after bowing to Government Junior College, Katsina on Friday.

Coach Kabiru Hussien’s side could not consolidate on their 3-0 victory over Nagari College on Thursday as they coach Aminu Zainu’s team claimed vital three points in the race to the national finals.

Though GSS College dominated the ball, they lacked any verve or guile in the opening stages, and only a fine Aliyu Sani save from Ibrahim’s venomous half-volley denied them the lead 20 minutes in.

But for all GJC’s defensive talent, it was Aminu Sanusi who got the winner – no thanks to a momentarily loss of concentration by Enoch Nanyak’s anchored backline.

ZAMFARA 1-0 KEBBI

Impressive Sambo Secondary School chalked up a second consecutive Regional Finals victory to sit atop the log with six points as Hussein Wadatau’s goal was enough to beat Nagari College 1-0 on Friday.

Having lost scandalously in their first game, the Birin Kebbi side came with the ambition of putting their tournament back on track.

Sambo School appeared the more dangerous side in a match between two evenly matched teams with Usama Barau looking particularly threatening.

With this defeat, Nagari’s place in the National finals look completed thwarted with their remaining games on Saturday mere formalities.

SOKOTO 1-2 JIGAWA

The last game of the day produced three goals as Adamu Maje Junior School edged GSSS Sokoto 2-1 at the Aminu Kano Commercial College.

Yahaya Adamu scored a double as AMJS kept the pressure on other teams seeking for a ticket to Lagos, while Isiah Warita got the consolation goal for his side.

GSSS could not force an equaliser, though, falling to a defeat that keeps Sambo Secondary School involved in the National final race.

COPA COCA-COLA REGIONALS WRAP: HARVEST OF GOALS IN IBADAN

The second day of the grassroots tournament witnessed lots of goals with the Kwara representative making the headlines.

Kwara 5-2 Ogun

Muslim Community Secondary School of Kwara State kicked off the opening game of day two against Nawair-ud-deen Junior High School and it was nothing but outright entertainment.

MCSS had an extra day of rest as they didn’t take part in day one activities and it seemed to benefit them as they took a 3-0 lead courtesy of Temitope Omodara who scored a hattrick. Ogun clawed their way back, scoring two goals via Matthew Okewunmi.

3-2 it was at halftime and MCSS’ Damilola Oloyede added a brace to give his Kwara side a deserved 5-2 win.

Ekiti 3-2 Ondo

Christ School, Ekiti, were up against Ondo Boys High School and it had everything to play for as both sides drew their respective opening matches against Lagos and Ogun.
Ekiti started well and got a deserved lead through Dotun

Ogunwole who fired home a brilliant free kick. 1-0 some became 2-0 as Ayomide Adeloju cut in front the left channel and curled the ball past Ondo’s goalie.

Ekiti leading comfortable at halftime but Ondo got their composure back in the second half and replied with goals from Kareem Kamarudeen and Akeem Salawudeen to make 2-2.

Ondo started pilling on the pressure from here with what looked like a clear goal ruled out for offside.

Kwara 4-1 Lagos

Muslim Community Secondary School was heading into this game against Keme Balogun Junior College of Lagos with a lot of confidence following their 5-2 win over Ogun earlier. The opening minutes were a bit cagey but it was Kwara that took the lead through Ayanfe Olarinde, who fired a thunderous shot from almost 25 yards.

It was 1-0 at the break but upon resumption, Kwara made it 2-0 courtesy of Lateef Muritala. Lagos did get a goal back through Toluwalope Oyenuga, who scored from the penalty spot.

Ayanfe would make it 3-1 for Kwara as he connected with a cross from hattrick hero in the first game, Temitope Omodara.

Omodara sealed the deal not long after with his fourth goal of the day making it 4-1 for MCSS.

There was a moment of madness as Lagos’ Alimi Fawas saw red for reacting angrily against the referee. It was a day of frustration for Lagos who are without a win from two games but its joy for Kwara with two wins from two.

Ogun 2-1 Ekiti

Nawair-ud-deen Junior High School of Ogun headed into this game without a win from two games and it was going to be difficult against Christ School. Ekiti, who were fresh from a 3-2 win against Ondo Boys High School.

Ogun had the first chance of the game but it was ruled out for offside. Ekiti would take the lead through Shola Ogunlana who had scored the winner against Ondo earlier. He made a run from the left flank, cut inside and fired the ball home. Ogun would however respond through Azeez Ogunbunmi who scored from a corner.

It ended 1-1 at halftime but Ekiti would start the second half brighter with Dotun Ogunwole sending two free kicks wide. Ogun would take a 2-1 through Wasiu Bashir and also had the chance to make it 3-1 but he shot straight at the keeper.

Ogun would hold on for a 2-1 win, their first of the competition, to wrap up day two action in Ibadan.
