Iran threatened to shoot down two US Navy surveillance aircraft flying close to Iranian territory in the Persian Gulf over the weekend, the latest in a series of recent provocations between Iran and the US military in the region, three US defense officials with knowledge of the incident told Fox News.

On Sept. 10, a Navy P-8 Poseidon with a crew of nine and an EP-3 Eries with a crew of roughly 24, were flying a reconnaissance mission 13 miles off the coast of Iran, in the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman, according to officials.

Iran’s territorial waters—like all nations--extend 12 miles into the sea, according to international maritime law.

At some point during the flight, the Iranian military warned the two aircraft to change course or risk getting shot down.

The US military planes ignored the warning and continued flying in international airspace, although close to Iranian territory, the officials told Fox.

“We wanted to test the Iranian reaction,” one US official told Fox News when asked why the US jets were flying close to Iran.
“It’s one thing to tell someone to get off your lawn, but we weren’t on their lawn,” the official continued. “Anytime you threaten to shoot someone down, it’s not considered professional.”

The official said the Iranian behavior was characterized as “unprofessional.” Another official said the incident was not considered “unsafe” because there were no Iranian missile launchers in the area, according to the latest intelligence reports The latest incident between the US military and Iran is just the latest in a series of confrontations in region.

Last month, Iranian fast-boats harassed US Navy warships in the Persian Gulf on at least five occasions. One incident resulting in three warning shots being fired from a US Navy coastal patrol craft, when an Iranian vessel ignored repeated radio calls to change course. On another occasion, an Iranian boat stopped 100 yards in front of a US Navy ship forcing it to take evasive maneuvers.

Over the weekend, a senior Iranian military commander dismissed claims that his vessels had harassed US Navy ships in in the Persian Gulf saying his nation acted in accordance with internationally recognized maritime law.

"Iranian boats continue to act based on defined standards and are well aware of the international laws and regulations, so the claims are not only untrue, but stem from their fear of the power of Iran's soldiers," said Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri, deputy chief of staff of Iran's armed forces, according to state news agency IRNA and reported by AFP.

Dangerous interactions at sea between Iran and the US Navy have doubled in the first half of 2016 compared to the same time last year, Fox News first reportedlast month.

On Aug. 30, the head of US forces in the Middle East was asked to explain Iran’s perceived aggressiveness.

“This is principally the regime leadership trying to exert their influence and authority in the region. And they are trying to do it in provocative ways,” said Gen. Joe Votel, commander of US Central Command at a Pentagon press briefing.

In July, days after the one-year anniversary of the nuclear agreement, Iran attempted at least their fourth ballistic missile test in violation of a UN Security Council resolution tied to the nuclear agreement.

In January, Iran took 10 US Navy sailors captive after their two patrol boats traveled into Iranian waters before releasing them 16 hours later.

In December, an Iranian missile boat fired several unguided rockets close to a US Navy aircraft carrier transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Hardliners like former President Mamhud Ahmedinijad might have left the Presidency, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Sayyid Khomeni might getting old, but that does not give the Americans the leeway to violate the Iranian air space. The American Jets would be shot down ten times over

US was flying 12 miles into international waters. Any attempt by iran would be provocative and an act of war.

Always trying to fly close to every nations border! what are they looking for there. They don't have enough oceans or waters in the USA borders or what? They do same in the south China sea. They are everywhere disturbing the peace and raising tensions. You know this people are not your friends and you know you would not want them doing same in your backyard regardless of what ever reasons, why always go to there own backyards to provoke nations and bring about some avoidable incidence.

My fear is intentionally or unintentionally someday the flying/sailing close to other nations border may bring about an incidence/accident that may just lead to war. They keep bring us close to another conflict. Is it a crime they stay there own area? would it hurt to allow the world have some peace. If not here then somewhere... Ehn !!! what are they doing in the Persian gulf or close to Iranian airspace so far away from home or an allied base.If not spoiling for trouble.

When you have an IRAN spoiling for the eradication of the state of Israel as if the people in isreal are cockroaches. And to make it worse, IRAN is developing nuclear weapons which it has openly claim she wants to use in wiping out the state of isreal from existence.
Sorry, IRAN needs to be monitored, and thank God America is rising up to the challenge.

Iran threats against Israel are really something to make you think.Israel has had nuclear weapons for 50years now,Iran is yet to develop a single warhead and they've been parading before the word the center piece of their nuclear agenda is to destroy Israel.

How about Israel drops one on them to show them what nuclear weapon really looks?Would the world condemn her or call it an act of defense?

The world will bring out its ugly teeths calling Israel an aggressor while they've disregarded Iran's claims to do same once they have a nuclear weapon.

Iran must always be in check and the United States will continue to protect Israel and other allies from radical extremist nations like Iran from terror. The day Iran attacks an American vessel on open waters or shoots down a jet in the air, they would regret the very day their nation was birth.

So what happened to the signed treaty to halt Iranian nuclear activity in return for lifting of sanctions? I thought USA signed some agreement with the Government of Iran to lift sanctions. Abi you were absent on earth when it happened. Let me tell you how it works. Its not about good or bad. Is not about justice or fairness. Its simply about interest. American Interest in Iran is all that matters. What alliances and relevance does she offer USA.
A typical example is Libya! Qaddafi let his guard down dinned and exchange promises for a greater tomorrow between him and the west. But when the crisis started we all saw how they ran to support the rebels.
They weigh there options and look at there strategic targets and foreign policy objectives in different regions then decide what to do. regardless it is fair or protects Israel interest.

Its not about Israel solely. Because when they signed that agreement Israel was so mad and upset yet USA went ahead. Again it suit there interest above that of Israel. So try to look beyond the cover. They have alot of deals going under table we all don't know about.
