SapeleGuy: @SapeleGuy Thanks for finally coming around to the same conclusion. However, the core issue behind my question remain unaddressed. To get to that issue I would reframe the question this way : How can Nigeria solve the national question without war if peaceful methods such as agreements are not possible? Is rational and dialogue-based solution possible in an environment of military siege? By military siege I mean the "I have the bigger gun and you can't do anything" scenario. The answer to these questions is critical. |

How can Nigeria solve the national question without war if peaceful methods such as agreements are not possible? Is rational and dialogue-based solution possible in an environment of military siege? By military siege I mean the "I have the bigger gun and you can't do anything" scenario. You know. . .I like the way you advance thoughts dude and it's unfortunate that these discussions have to take place in a virtual and broadly inclusive forum. It would have been more appropriate for discussions with this much sensitivity to be conducted in an exclusive and closed invitation-only forum. That way you are guaranteed focus and objectivity and the discussions can be better driven for purpose than its obtainable otherwise. As you have already witnessed, you are having to repeat your questions many times over and the responses are more of a personal attack than a substantive contributions. In any way that we aim to chart our progress and development going forward, we mustheal the pain of the past. It is true that we were not around when this war was fought but we are living the pains of the war and we are echoing the misgivings of the war. This is because our conscience is scarred with the inequities and its resulting injury to the customary pride of tribal identity. There are intra- and inter-tribal feuds. For example many people have questioned the judgement of Yoruba leaders and their silence in the first and second massacres of 1966. The silence was the result of a much more political firestorm that had brewed internally within Yorubaland dating from about 1958 and this internal bloodbath had already created camps with blurry lines of loyalty, so that the Yorubas were at a point where an external event was needed to stall the political bloodbath and resolve their differences. The 66 massacres provided that for the West. On the other hand, The East and the North did not have similar political footprint as West and so it was hard for them to understand the silence from West, inspite of the fact that Yorubas suffered great casualties in the central politics. It paled in comparison with what went on intra- but also served as that critical catalyst to break truce and bring the camps back together, which fortunately so happened successfully when everyone fell behind Awo post 1966. In todays political environment, we have similar problems in the regions, .intra - and inter- tribal feuds. We need to inspect the past, we need to define the future and we need to propose ways to go from current to the future. . .whatever way we go, together or separately, HEALING MUST BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE STRATEGY! |

Onlytruth: Onlytruth - I think my position has been constant and clear, I have tried to be sensitive because this is a very emotive issue but it needs to be said that Aburi was an exercise in futility and deception. The quick fix military solution has proved not to work (it was neither quick or effective), with changes in military and insurgency tactics it will be a never ending war. Our only option is to pursue the objectives through a mature democratic process. But we need to have common ideologies that will heal the wounds and mistrust of yesteryears and foster self determination for all. The war that needs to be fought now is the ideological war for resource control. The tactics are different from secession but the objectives remain the same. This is the way that we can achieve the autonomy that we all deserve. How were the mid west able to carve a region for themselves in the first republic with a derivation principle of 50%? Those lessons are more instructive than the abortive aburi papers. 1 Like |

Are Igbo really asking for secession or justice in Nigeria? I think the pain of the Igbo stems from the dilemma that unlike other ethnic groups who hardly invest in places outside their region, they have always believed in one Nigeria. So when they were massacred, esp in the north, over a coup they were not party to, they felt that they were no longer safe in Nigeria. If the then Head of State Ironsi and some other Igbo rulers were killed in that counter-coup, it could have been understood as just revenge. But the massacre was planned and systematically executed by soldiers in military barracks; then civilians took over and went from house to house killing and burning men, women and children who had been their friends and neighbours in cold blood, while the govt looked the other way. Igbo saw and still see it as a plan to wipe them out of Nigeria, and a clear sign that they were not wanted in Nigeria. After the Aburi Accord was breached by Gowon, they felt that if the Accord could be breached, then they could no longer trust Nigeria to protect them. The dilemma of the Igbo these days is that having lost the war and having been forced back into Nigeria, they are still regularly massacred and told to go home. Even in Western Nigeria where they are not killed, the Igbo are constantly told directly or indirectly to go home. A people said they wanted to leave a union because of injustice, and they were massacred and brought back. Yet any time they make efforts to integrate themselves into Nig by investing in other parts of Nig, they are resented, accused of domination and told to go home. If there is One Nigeria, why should a NIGERIAN not be free to settle down in any part of Nigeria and look for his daily bread in peace? Nigerians buy lands in other parts of Nigeria and are protected by the law. Nigerians live in the US, UK, etc and are even voted into offices. Yet a NIGERIAN buying land within Nigeria is accused of wanting to buy out the whole state; a Nigerian paying for a shop to do his biz is accused of domination. Were the plots of land seized by force by the Igbo? Were the shops stolen by Igbo men and women? Someone sells his land or even swamp (like in the Ojo area of Lagos), you pay him in full, pay the omo nile money, and build a house on that piece of land (or swamp); then you are accused of domination. There are so many plots of land in Igbo for sale. All human beings, including non-Nigerians, are free to buy them, and nobody will ever disturb you, as long as you did not steal the land. If anyone attacks you as a settler or stranger in Igbo land, the whole community will fight for you and defend you. The truth is that deep down the heart of Igbo people, they are not looking for secession. They know that they can excel in biz and academics, so they want a just Nigeria where they can rise to whatever level they want without hindrance. It is the frustration they face daily in the contradictions in Nig that make some people talk about secession. Igbo don't want to take over Nigeria. Igbo don't hate Nigeria. Igbo don't hate other ethnic groups. Igbo don't want to take over the oil in the Niger Delta (They believe that without oil they can survive). It is just that they cannot understand why they are always being treated as non-Nigerians or inferior Nigerians in a land that they fought hard to secure independence for. The truth is that given the huge investments Igbo make in all parts of Nigeria and the development they help to engineer in places outside their region, unlike other ethnic groups, no ethnic group believes in One Nigeria more than the Igbo. There is no denying that if an egalitarian Nigeria ia allowed to be, Nigeria and Nigerians will all move into the 21st century with the rest of the world. An egalitarian Nigeria will also make Nigerians believe strongly in Nigeria like the Americans and Israelis. I pray to see such a Nigeria in my lifetime. God bless Nigeria! 1 Like |

JProspero: Excellent post! The Igbos want fairness, justice and equity. The average Igbo person does not need favoritism to survive. Just provide a level playing field and allow the best in terms of academics and hard work to get his/her due. Is there anything wrong with asking for the above? |

Well Nigerians are not there yet mentally so maybe Igbos should wait for another 200 years until Nigerians start thinking that way. I THINK NOT. |

For the avoidance of doubt I have copied a definition of 'egalitarian' - Affirming, promoting, or characterized by belief in equal political, economic, social, and civil rights for all people. These are extracts from the constitution of the 1st Republic of Nigeria. (before Aburi) Executive authority of Regions 80. The executive authority of a Region shall extend to the execution and maintenance of the constitution of the Region and to all matters with respect to which the legislature of the Region has for the time being power to make laws but shall be so exercised as not to impede or prejudice the exercise of the executive authority of the Federation or to endanger the continuance of federal government in Nigeria. Mining royalties and rents 134. (1) There shall be paid by the Federation to each Region a sum equal to fifty per cent. of- (a) the proceeds of any royalty received by the Federation in respect of any minerals extracted in that Region; and (b) any mining rents derived by the Federation during that year from within that Region. (2) The Federation shall credit to the Distributable Pool Account a sum equal to thirty per cent. (a) the proceeds of any royalty received by the Federation in respect of minerals extracted in any Region; and (b) any mining rents derived by the Federation from within any Region. |

It is rather pathetic that you guys are still sulking after more than 40 years. Didn't the Amercians fight a Civil War? You Igbo bigots, apology to the reasonable ones, would always look for someone to blame for your woes. And whose account are you relying on? Ojukwu personal historian or what ? To be modest, I know a little about history and i can say that every one of us would give a different version of the same event that we witnessed. It might be deliberate distortion or erroneous misrepresentation of facts. what would the Gowons, the Adebayos, the Katsinas have said about the same event? Was your Azikwe not hobnobbing with Balewa while Awolowo was langushing in jail? Stop ascribing perfection to your tribe and start looking for ways to fully integrate yourselves. I am tired of reading all these sanctimonious diatribes. |

pcicero: It is official, you are a certified slowpoke! We survived your genocide (weapons of mass starvation). Americans never committed genocide against fellow Americans in the name of a civil war. You want us to forget our 2 million dead (who had no reason to die), and you have the guts to ask us to forget after just 40 years. World war II war criminals are still being sought and brought to justice. Here's your badge!

The constitution as we have it is still not working I believe Ojukwu was under divine influence to have suggested self autonomy and then meeting at the center to take decisions that will affect the entity called Nigeria. That's what the NA should be discussing now but it seems NOBODY wants to rock the boat(again?). |

pcicero: The moment I read the poster’s attempt to analogically juxtapose United States of America’s civil war and its aftermath to that of Nigeria/Biafra civil war, I deduced that the poster is an irredeemable fool. The Americans have memorialized the names of the fallen soldiers of the Confederacy in the capital city of Washington, DC and yet this imbecilic slowpoke is being twisted out of human form that conference held in Aburi, Ghana is being revisited. |

@pcocero Simply debating the ups and downs of the conference held in Aburi, Ghana drove you to a drunken state of imbecility. If we dabble into the nuances of the battles between the two armies, I am sure you would be drowned in the sea of momentary insanity. At least, you remained informed that eastern region would have defeated any region of Nigeria baring the help from Britain and other significant countries. I would categorically and unequivocally state that in any form of spiral of arms between whatever ethnic group that gave rise to a dumb ass such as you and Ndigbo, your hopeless ethnicity that you are very ashamed to mention will cease to exist. I have no qualms about the outcome of Nigeria/Biafra civil war since the attrition of the event reiterated the fact that Ndigbo are group of people to be reckoned even in defeat. I would have been ashamed if Biafra was defeated by Nigeria with its military wherewithal baring huge military and diplomatic help from Britain, Australia, Egypt, USSR, Arab League of Nations, Niger Republic, Cameroon and Chad Republic. You are not only a malcontent dullard but an intellectual midget that do deserve any form of attention. |

@Onlytruth You can drop your weapon now, the war ended some 42 odd years ago, in fact it will be difficult to remind your Generalissimo that he was engaged in a war with Nigeria, he is a fully integrated Nigerian now. I think the problem with people like Onlytruth was they were never ever fully de-commissioned and rehabilitated into mainstream Nigeria hence he think in his warp mind that the Biafran troops can still hold own to Nnewi not knowing Nnewi fell some 42 years ago. I blame Gowon for the mal-administrative error and the oversight for not fully integrating these remnant but loyal troops into the Nigeria Army. You u might be due a medal for your forthrightness in pursuing your goal to the very end even though your Generalissimo who has since moved on, running as a Presidential candidate in the Nigeria state he once abhorred does not share your views anymore. He Ojukwu is not only laughing all the way to the bank having sponsored a sitting Governor, he is for now a contented man. |
Re: The Famous Aburi Conference In Full Minute Detail: Judge For Yourself by Onlytruth(m): 9:24am On Oct 22, 2009 |
@KnowAll Point of correction, Nnewi never fell to any Nigerian troops until Biafra surrendered. No Nigerian soldier ever set foot on Nnewi during the war. The "Generalissimo" protected the town well. You contradict yourself when you say that Ojukwu accepts Nigeria the way it is. What do you expect an old man like him to do now? When he was younger, he stood for something higher than himself, risking his fathers wealth to fight for the dignity of his people. For standing up to the cancer that would eventually arrest Nigeria for 42 years, a carefully orchestrated genocide was committed against our people. Ojukwu has paid his dues, it is time younger generation takes over the struggle and we have not disappointed so far. MASSOB under Uwazuruike is not doing badly! When our Generalissimo eventually joins his ancestors, he would know that 2 million Biafrans never died in vain. My Generalissimo was always smiling to the bank from birth! He was born into wealth. His father was a millionaire in pound sterling in 1950s! Go figure. You are right on one point: Nigeria needs to address the reasons for which Biafra fought the war. If not, we would still be arrested for another 42 years. Nigeria is not the only country to ever fight a civil war. Smarter countries always addressed the reasons behind their wars to the satisfaction of the separatist protagonists. Nigeria simply swept hers under the carpet! |

Re: The Famous Aburi Conference In Full Minute Detail: Judge For Yourself by KnowAll(m): 11:39am On Oct 22, 2009 |
@Onlytruth It doesn’t matter whether Nnewi was physically routed by federal troops or they surrendered willingly, the bottom-line is, uprising and any hostility came to an abrupt end. So my advice to u will be, albeit belated since your Generalissimo did not communicate it down the chain of command in his haste to jump the sinking ship called Biafra. I will say it now to you without mincing my words move on with your life as he has moved on with his. The amount of time u commit dwelling on a spent and dead issue will not do some individuals like Soludo any favours. You and your kith and kin should be routing for him rather than holding onto a delusional idea of Biafra, If the Igbo stock throw their weight behind this gentleman he may well be our next President since his clout and personality will be accepted in all Geo-Political zones. Although having said that, I have my own personal reservations about him, but who am I to hold progress and determine the destiny of an Individual. When will people get that Biafra was and will never be about Gen. Ojukwu? I don’t blame u for this statement if your brother-in-law was a sitting governor, what am I saying, a Chairman/ Councillor in one of the numerous LG in the 5 Igbo States u will be singing a different tune just like your Generalissimo. Nigeria will be the best thing since slice bread was discovered |
