The Presidency will install plagiarism detection software in the computers of its speechwriters to prevent a recurrence of plagiarism in presidential speeches, sources in the State House have disclosed.
President Muhammadu Buhari had in his “Change begins with me” speech this month lifted a paragraph from US President Barack Obama’s 2008 victory speech.

The presidency had apologized for the incident - which it blamed on an overzealous aide - and said it wouldn’t happen again.
Sources said officials in the presidency have now resolved to take a range of measures to guard against any further embarrassment.
“One of the measures will be to install plagiarism detection software to check speeches before they are delivered by the president,” an official involved in the plan told Daily Trust.
He said they all felt embarrassed by the plagiarism case, even though it was essentially the stupidity of one individual who didn’t envisage the gravity of his action.
When contacted over the plan, presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, confirmed it. He said the Presidency was determined to ensure that a case of plagiarism would never happen again.
He had earlier issued a statement in which the presidency blamed a deputy director “for the insertion of the contentious paragraph”.
It said: “This serious oversight will be investigated thoroughly and appropriate sanction meted. The Presidency wishes to state in the clearest possible terms that it regrets this unfortunate incident and will ensure that this does not happen again. President Buhari urges Nigerians to look beyond this incident and focus on the message of change,” the statement added.
Sources told Daily Trust that the deputy director responsible for the incident would be removed from the presidency. The case was particularly embarrassing to the presidency, especially as it came at a time US officials scheduled a meeting between President Obama and President Buhari.
The two presidents are expected to meet Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session. President Buhari is already in New York to attend the UN session and conduct several other international engagements.

There is no need for a software, just get better speechwritter. Not software that will slow down the pace of work

slimmy2005:
It takes just 5-10 minutes for turnitin to run proper check on any academic materials.
It should be installed in all universities and see how many Professors will be stripped off their useless plagiarized dessertation.

Wetin be this I beg... I have actually been wondering, if a leader cannot prepare a speech himself, it means what he reads as promises are just promises/ speeches made by others. He can never fulfill them because they were/are actually not his words. Nigeria, we import goods, we import speech! Issorait!

What about the millions allocated for purchase of softwares for office of the presidency? I would think that they already had one .

My reactionary president - only reacts when the damage has been done.

Anyways better than never!

This administration will always find a way to blame someone for their incompetence. I'm surprised no one has blamed jonathan so far for this monumental embarrassment.

By pinning the blame on the so-called unnamed deputy director, they are indirectly proving their negligence and ineptitude. I say so because the person must have submitted a draft version of the speech which they approved before it was released to the press.

They should sack the deputy director as well as themselves. We are tired already!

Rather than engage in plagiarism only during propaganda, I will like to see Buhari copy Obama not just in words but in deeds!

More plagiarism in action and method of leadership please!!!
