An under-aged girl from Birnin ruwa village in Sokoto state , has alleged that she was raped, impregnated and abandoned by one Alhaji Giwa who is also from the same village. According to a report, the Alhaji has denied being responsible for her pregnancy in a Sharia court in Sokoto.

The story of this under-aged Maimuna an orphan of Birnin ruwa village in sokoto who was raped, impregnated and abandoned by one Alhaji Giwa of the same village as accused, is very touchy.

Maimuna who is 8 month pregnant, has no body to cater for her pregnancy in this very young age. She is now helpless her father died since, and the person accused of impregnating her denied before the upper sheri'a court in sokoto, but Maimuna insisted that Alhaji Giwa as accused, was the only one who impregnated her.

The two witnesses from the same village have attested before the court that Alhaji Giwa even told them that he will take Maimuna to a specialist for abortion, but later changed his mind.

A child of a very poor family, Maimuna is in dare need of assistance from human right agencies because Alhaji the person in accuse of impregnating her already hared a lawyer for the case.

HOPEI is sad to hear this touching storey of Maimuna, we will assist in taking care of the victim up to the time she will put to bed inshaa Allah. We will also join hands with any NGO wishing to fight for the injustice done to this orphan.

Let the court case take its course. There is no scope for lawyers looking for loopholes when it comes to the sharia. He can hire a hundred SANs if he likes, it is not likely to help him if the evidence is available, and judgement is made correctly. As it is though, it is going to be hard to prove that he really committed the crime in ANY court of law. They should just make her a ward of the state, and take care of her needs/adopt the child. And if they do not have enough evidence to convict, refer him to the highest court in the hereafter.

Pray tell, how do one justify rape in sharia?
I learnt there MUST be a witnesses who must be Muslims and confirmed "sane" enough to testify.
Forgive my ignorance, if any.

By the way, rape cases in the north is very "Normal", and hardly reported as compared to other divides. Reasons being that, the chances of the victims getting justice is almost not achievable. The victims most times are accused of bringing shame to their religion.
