2. Stairway Grave.

Florence Irene Ford died at the age of 10 in 1871. Her mother was so filled with sadness that she had her child's coffin and tomb constructed with a glass window at the head.

And next to the burial site she had cement stairs built that lead to the window, covered by a metal door. This way the mother could visit her child whenever she wanted. It's said she went there during every storm, because her daughter was scared of thunder.

While she was alive, the daughter was terrified of storms. The grave was constructed with an entrance that descends to the level of the coffin. Her mother would come and enter the tomb during storms to comfort her child.

Would have loved to know how the mother was buried?

Every grave tells a story.

1. Chase Mausoleum, Barbados.

The Chase Family Vaultin Christ Church Parish, Barbados was built in 1724 and first used in 1807. Remains were interred and sealed with marble and cement.

In 1812, the mausoleum was opened for the fourth burial, but the three earlier coffins were found to have moved. An infant's coffin was found standing on end.

The coffins were repositioned and resealed. Twice in 1816 and once in 1819, the crypt was opened for further burials and the previous coffins were found flipped over or turned end-to-end.

The island governor ordered a seal placed on the door and sand was put on the floor to retain evidence of any break-ins. Yet when the crypt was next opened, the seal was unbroken, the sand was intact, and the coffins were again moved. That's when the family decided to relocate the coffins of their loved ones elsewhere. The vault has not been used since. Although contemporary accounts say there was no evidence of flooding, the simplest explanation is underground water seepage, which could move coffins without seeming to disturb a layer of sand. As the vault is built of coral, leakage does seem to make sense.

11. Princess Elisabeth Demidoff 1779 – 1818(France).

One of the richest women of her generation, in her will she challenged any one to a pretty massive of her fortune if they could spend a week living inside her mausoleum without going mad.

Many have tried, many have failed and the fortune remains unclaimed.

15. About 4000 Capuchin Franciscan friars are housed in this crypt boasting of an intricate floor to ceiling arrangement of human bones paired with the crypt’s soil which is supposedly from Jerusalem.

Various bones are utilized in different chapels. For instance, there is a chapel called “Crypt of the Pelvises” and another one, “Crypt of the Skulls”.

There is a solemn reminder underneath a child’s Grim Reaper that states;

“What You Are Now, We Once Were Too And What We Are Now, You Will Be”

14. This is the last remaining grave from an old cemetery in rural Indiana. Most of the graveyard was moved to make way for the state highway.

The grandson of the woman buried there refused to have his grandmother moved. The county eventually gave in and built the road around the grave.
