As most of us know, WhatsApp has announced that
after 31 December 2016, it will cease support for all BlackBerry devices, save the PRIV.
Furthermore, recently WhatsApp ceased support for OS 6 devices and below: https://www.whatsapp.com/faq/en/bb/20951501

Curiously enough though, the same post in Spanish

Actually, the app is still available through BBW and
OTA through WhatsApp's site ( https://
www.whatsapp.com/ota/). However, in both cases I
have bumped into the same message stating
that neither my 9780 nor 9800 are supported phones anymore and that I should upgrade device.

After looking for workarounds (I use the 9780 as
secondary line and will sell the 9800 to a
friend), none of the suggestions solved the issue.
Among others, I tried the "change date" trick and
attempted to restore a quite old version to no avail.

However, skimming through the reviews on BBW
yesterday, I bumped into the following link: http://
beta.whatsapp.com/ota and voilà, it worked! I
managed to install Beta version 2.16.47 on both
devices and have used it succesfully on the Bold.

Note: Make sure to access the link through your
device's browser. I'd recommend uninstalling any
other WhatsApp version you have and rebooting your phone before.

P.S. I have no clue how much time it will work, but
hopefully this helps some OS 6 legacy users who
need WhatsApp. Likewise, don't expect support from WhatsAp in case you encounter any bugs.

I have no idea if it will work on previous models, like the very popular 8520 Curve with OS 5, but if it does, don't hesitate to let the community know, cheers!
