Fashola: How We Achieved More Power for National Grid Despite Sabotage

The maintenance of broken down turbines at the nation’s hydro-electric plants, enhanced their generating capacity during the increased circle of rainfall and water levels, and contributed substantially to the current addition of more power to the National Grid in spite of the vandalism of power assets.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, explained yesterday, when he made a presentation at the Wilson Centre, Washington DC, USA. He said the repair works and maintenance were carried out on the hitherto abandoned turbines, as part of steps taken to achieve incremental power.

Making a presentation on the theme, “Leadership and the Politics of Reforms in Africa: Lessons from Nigeria”, the Minister said electricity supply increased by 400 Megawatts in the last two weeks.

He recalled that over 3000MW of power had been lost over the last six months due to consistent vandalism and sabotage of oil and gas pipelines and assets. “The hydros are giving us almost 400MW of power and that is a lot of power given our situation. And we have added about 1MW of Solar and there is more coming; so I think we are on our way.” The minister had earlier prom- ised that current boost in
power would be further strengthened by various transmission projects currently being carried out in several axis of the nation’s six geo-political zones.

Coming against the back- ground of complaints in some quarters that transmission was the weakest link in the power chain, Fashola, said progress was being made in the expansion of transmission adding, however, that it would be consistent with achieving incremental power within the value chain. In the area of projects aimed at achieving incremental power, Fashola, who said the focus of government was mainly on the energy mix initiative to diversify energy source, listed such projects to include the Zungeru Power plant where work is nearing completion after more than two years of suspension of work and the Azura Power Plant in Edo State where, according to him, work was also suspended for over two years due to court issues.

Noting that there were also many smaller hydro-plants like Chalawa hydro plant, Ikere hydro plant, the minister said there are more than 40 such small hydro-plants which government was also trying to bring into procurement.

“We have completed the business plan on eight and we are trying to see if we can get that on. That would help our rural electrification projects because those dams are in the rural areas,” said Fashola. On Solar energy, the minister, said the country has a lot of sunlight that could be used when the radiation was optimum and efficient during the day and also in parts of the country where the radiation levels were most prolific so that efficiency would be delivered.

Babatunde Raji Fashola the man of vision with a mission of actions.

He speaks little but doing great.
To Lagosians, BRF can never disappoint as he has done it before but to outsiders and haters he is overrated.

Consider the following.

In 1year you only added 400Mw
Therefore in 4years you will probably add up to 1,600Mw because there will always be sabotage

Factor in our present governments incompetence and poor economic decisions
We can then subtract 800mw from our anticipated 1600mw

So in 4years you only end up adding 800mw to the national grid as opposed to your 10,000Mw campaign promise.

What I have found out about Nigeria is that we pontificate and criticize a lot without offering cogent possible solution and advice. Yes, Nigeria is a potential giant that is playing in the league of the dwarfs. Nigeria is a very difficult country to govern, whereas we posses all the necessary ingredients to be a powerful and prosperous nation but, we are handicapped by ethnic, tribal and selfish interests.

Anyone in government seriously working hard doing the right things for Nigeria soon find out that road
block is already there.

The worst are the citizens at large, we criticize and condemn but given the same opportunity we do the worst.

Let's try and encourage the little serious effort some of these ministers are making rather than rubbish them all together. To make a serious impact and to wake up this sleeping giant, it will take a benevolent dictator, you can't play nice to impact Nigeria, you must play tough, strait and be transparently honest.

Nobody listens to our complains/criticism and our advise/possible solution also falls on deaf ears.
Plus its easier to criticize (pull down) than to Advice (build up).
And its not a nigerian thing but world wide.

Sometimes I wonder after reading some reports. Is this really a news and we should celebrate it? Well you cannot give what you don't have. Why do I say so? Check the profile of most of the this administration's minister and see if it corresponds with their ministries. Does he know how electricity works? Talk of housing, what about that of ICT? We must get it right

Hypocrite!

You know about South Africa but are always on the defense when it pertains to GEJ. How many megawatts did he add? And where did you see the celebration?

At least, it will never be said that they didn't do anything at all about the situation. You're always quick to spit fire without proper reasoning. Yikes!

Wailers will be very SAD.

"We added 400MW power".... Fashola

Wailers : "It is a lie where is it "

"We lost 2000MW" .... Fashola

Wailers : "We told them"

Note that the info is from the same source. When it is positive, it is a lie. When it is negative they jump on it to remind us why GEJ was the messiah we rejected.

It is a WIN WIN situation for losers.

This is only for group of people who can reason. Unfortunately, wailers don't.

When they went back to Chad for exploration. They were criticized that North wanted oil.

The gas predicted to be in Chad Basin is enough to power Nigeria 24/7

I will forever respect Barth Nnaji and GEJ

When GEJ was able to beef up power to 6000MW inspite of sabotage and vandalism , some rocket scientist from one small corner of the country was ranting.

Instead of joining to condemn vandalism under GEJ then, they celebrated it
Instead of to help defeat Bokoharam, they bought pages of newspapers and blogs to amplify their activities. Buhari himself never attended any council of state meeting to proffer solutions.

Now the chicken have come home to roost, let them work their way out.
