ABOUT THE MARRIAGE OF AISHA TO THE PROPHET

Why did Aisha(radhiallahuannhu) marry the prophet(Peace be upon him) at a young age. People wonder and ask. Did the prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him) marry a child?
Was this normal practice 1400 years ago? What is the wisdom behind it?
According to authentic sources, prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him) married Aisha(RA) when she was 6 years old, and the marriage was consummated after she turned 9 years old.
It is important to understand things in their historical context. For instance, it would be silly to ask, what kind of milk did they drink 1400 years ago. Or to ask what kind of engine they used back then.
Therefore, one must first understand that things 1400 years ago were different from now, times have changed and so have humans.
1400 years ago it was common for women to marry at a young age. It is a historic fact that girls from the ages of 9-14 were married off in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Saint Augustine(350AD) married a girl who was 10 years old, King Richard II(1400AD) married a 7 years old, Henry VIII (1500AD) married a 6 years old.
Even in the bible: "...but save for yourselves every GIRL who has never slept with a man." Numbers 31:17-18. Catholic Encyclopedia; Mary the mother of Jesus was 12 years old when she married 99 years old Joseph.
Between 1929 Church of England ministers could marry 12 years old in Britain. Before 1983, catholic canon law permitted priests to marry off brides ooff at age 12. A lot of people are unaware; In the USA, in the state of Delaware in 1880, the minimum age for marriege was 7 years old and in California it was 10 years old. Even NOW, the marriage age for some states are 12 (Massach), 13(New Hamp), 14(NY).
At the time of the prophet Muhammad(Peace be upon him) those who refused his message tried every method and strategy to discredit him. They always looking for opportunities to attack him verbally or even physically. Some of this verbal abuse consisted of calling him a MAGICIAN, SOOTHSAYER, CRAZY. However, they never thought to point out or object to his marriage to Aisha(RA), why? Because, this was the norm of society, meaning it was completely normal....
Did you know: Prophet Muhammad had only one wife throughout the first 54 years of his life? Did you know, she was a widow? Did you know that she was 15 years older than him? He spent his entire youth with her. He was committed to her until and after her death by keeping ties with her friends.
But what about Aisha(RA)? Was she a child when she agreed to marry the prophet Muhammad(Peace be upon him)? First, it is important to note. It is strictly prohibited in Islaam to marry someone before the age of puberty(Qur4:6). NOTE: the age of puberty varies throughtout different times and different places. According to scientific references; girls might enter full blown puberty antime between 9-15 years old(livescience.com).
Also, average temperature of the country is considered the chief factor with regard to menstruation and sexual puberty(Women: An Historical Gynecological and Anthropological Compendium, Volume 1, Lord& Branaby 1988, p.563).
So was Aisha(RA) a child? No, she was not! So what was the wisdom behind this marriage.. God always knows best.. But the marriage of Aisha(RA) was an intruction from God(Bukhari; Vol5; Book 58; hadith 235). Aisha narrated to us more than 2200 hadiths(sayings) of the prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him). Aisha was exceptionally intelligent, and since she married the prophet at a young age, she was able to learn so much from him.
She later played an important role as a teacher, expert and interpreter in Islaam. So there was much wisdom behind the marriage!!! For those who do not know, the prophet, he didn't come to seek wordly pleasure, but he warned us against them! His companions described him a man of morality and they said he was more shy than a virgin in seclusion.
When believers asked him an awkward question(s), he would cover his face out of shyness. He taught us that each religion is known for a kind of morality and morality of Islaam is shyness/Modesty(Qur 18:110)....
