How Yoruba Language Originated From Urhobo Language by Ruke1989: 11:01am On Sep 28, 2016
The word, "yoruba" was not known to mankind until the colonial period. The present inhabitants of the south west were simply living in the western side of Benin Kingdom. The Benin Kingdom has long history and did trade with the Portuguese as far back as 16th century. The earliest map of AFRICA captured the benin empire but didn't recognize any other empire in the West of Benin.

Yoruba language uses words like omo(child), ikuta(stone), alibosa(onion), akamu, otor(ground), among countless other words which you find in urhobo, benin and Ibo languages. This tells us about the history of the yoruba people. if you ever wondered why the yoruba language shared similar words with many other Nigerian languages, worry no more. The answer is here.

The yoruba up to the late 18th century when the colonial masters invaded Africa were not known by the common name "yoruba". They were simply called bush people. This is because they are situated in the western forests. The oba of Benin often sent his warriors to invade the western forests and capture slaves which were often sold off to the white men ie slave dealers in exchange for a piece of clot or iron. This is why you have millions of yorubas in Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean countries. Up till today, the yoruba have never appreciated or acknowledged our effort. You can relate this story better if you have read the book on "Samuel Ajay crowther". Just one of those bush men captured back then. Also if you remember the history of Olumo rock. That's why yoruba people reverence that rock because any time warriors from Benin struck, some managed to hide there.

Fortunately or unfortunately, some of the bush men (now known as Yoruba) eventually captured from bush to the city(ie Benin). They get to learn urhobo, Benin and Ibo languages there under their masters. After which a number of them escape again into the south western bushes. That is the reason you see a trace of urhobo, Benin, Ibo and even hausa in the modern day yoruba language. The hausa components may have been introduced by escapee slaves from Kwara axis Fulani Emirate.

Why are they now one of the majority in this modern day Nigeria
Besides they where much proofs to back up your claims, or is it just speculations

another lunatic on nairaland.

I'm sorry but nairaland is now a joke

1. Benin was the only prominent west african group that wasn't majorly involved in slave trade with the Europeans
2. most of Benin slaves were igbos
3. all pre colonial Maps of africa show empires west of Benin. .. all of which were larger in size than Benin
4. the story of olumo Rock involves Dahomey not bini. ..

there is no need getting emotional about this nice and very educative thread. This is not about who is more civilized, it about knowing our hidden history as yorubas. Is it because this intellectually sound thread described us as bush people? Counter it with fact

Ahh, Yoruba language originated from Urhobo ke? Olodo! The entire region west of Bini is owned by Urhobo Empire. The Urhobos were one of the most feared Empires in old Africa.

wonders shall never end on the abuse and all sort of names that many people of Edo extraction have melted out to to people of IFE who had different names before settling down for means of recognition as Yoruba Race . However, I am really surprised at some people ranging from the word “Oba" that had existed as a leader /ruler's name/title before the advent of Oranmiyan going to ogodomogo in Present day Edo, where he called the place a vexed land “Ibinu"a Yoruba word turned to Bini in today's Edo. We haven't finished contesting the struggle over Oba title which preceded the emergence of the second Oba of Bini if you want to agree with me, the first being oranmiyan, himself while Owoka (Eweka) which literally Mean ,my hands encompass, his son was the second king after the father left which perhaps may be the reason, THE FIRST SON TO BE KING NEVER SEES OR MEET his father in person till the father dies with fact as there Existed Obatala, obalufe, Obalufon etc before meeting the Bini or even Of Ododuwa that Edo people claimed to be their own. Then another minor group of Edo extract that claimed to see Yoruba in the ancient times as Demi-god came up with another grandmasters lies of Yoruba being called uncivilized people (Bush people ) when in actual fact Itsekiri was larger than urhobo subgroup in 14th/15th/16th century. But due to more polygamous nature of urhobo men whom in those ancient time were men lazy men who were ethanol tappers and drinkers.. I am tired of these rubbish being spread by unread people in Nairaland. Where were your great grand fathers when the war against the Yorubas were orchestrated by Nupe/ Borgu /Dahomey /Ashanti kingdom? even to the ravaging Islamic jihadist during Aare onakankanfo Afonja's betrayal to Oyo ile or the Yoruba civil war that lasted 16yers in which Britain didn't do anything but watched from the fence until 1893 that truce was signed among the same group through the same Britain after many lives had been lost, you were not mentioned at all either against or for ,even the ITSEKIRI played a role but you were in the bush ,tapping wine/ ogogoro (sapele water) . Urhobo that were nobody now come out spill trash on Yoruba Race. Urhobo that Awolowo and other great Yoruba leaders and included very limited Edo extract had helped to become educated today in western Nigeria through free education in 1950s whom were not exposed to civilization in the 1900s are now churning out irritated thread of this manner. Go and Challenges ITSEKIRI first very close to you whom are a sub Yoruba grouping before you come out with your filthy mouth to insult my Race. If N'DIGBO of BIAFRA during the civil war of 1967/1970 don't see you URHOBO as nothing but a piece of CAKE to capture during the war , but Yoruba as a problem to their secession, then The answer is Right before ALL of YOU. May God help you urhobo wayoo, Amin.

This is exactly how discord starts between peaceful neighbors after people fall for the mischievous trappings of some mischievous beings.
Please, Urhobos as a whole have no problem with Yoruba people. Not the ones I have met. Infact, permit me to say that Urhobos and all Edo derive groups are very culturally friendly towards Yorubas.

Oduduwa according to the last oba of Benin did not fall from heaven but was a Benin man banished from Benin empire to ile ife over some misconduct. From there he impregnated a woman and helped the achieve a more organized and civilized empire by working with other outlaws in his network. To me, this perspectives is more reasonable in tracing origin of Yoruba and the empire.

That story makes sense to every sane mind when compared to the folktale which proposes that oduduwa fell from the sky with snail shell with which Yoruba land was created and the dynasty set up
