If you have you have been to Scotland, or watched some Scottish movies, you would have seen some Scottish men putting on kneel level pleated skirts. The pleated skirts are actually called KILTS, and it has been around for as far as 16th century. The word kilt is derived from the ancient Norse word "kjiljt"means clothes that are tucked up. It was worn traditionally as full length garment (usually 5ft wide and 21ft long) with belt by the Highlanders in Northern Scotland in the 16th century.



kilts are make with Tartan, tartan is a fabric with horizontal and vertical stripes with different colors. The interwoven stripes are called sett. Most of Scottish clans have their own particular types pf tartan, so many Scottish wear tartans that belong to their clan, but their is no law prohibiting them from wearing tartans of other clans.



For many centuries, English try to subdue kilt as it was seen as a rebellious symbol. It was even outlawed in 1746 by King George ii with his dress act policy. This does not stop the Highlanders from wearing Kilt as a form of protest. The ban was lifted in 1782, the kit wearing Highlanders were seen as fearless people, and many of them are recruited to join the king's armies, and they were sent as far as India and North America.

Starting from 19th century, they are not being use as a day to day clothes, but as clothing for special occasions like weddings, funerals, family parties, and festivals. They are also worn by Highland dancers, Highland band. Some army regimen also have kilt as part of their uniform, the last time kilt was used to fight war was during was during World war ii.
