Lawyers are known to be a long-time reliable person to protect or defend a person from different cases. There are different specialties of lawyers and one should know the type of specialty for a certain circumstance. For general protection, the family lawyers are the one that can holistically protect the rights of each member of the family.

There are several advantages that come from having the right kind of family lawyer. They include:

1. They specialize in family cases.

Most people do not know their rights, until they feel that they have been abused or taken advantage of. This happens when a family member has done something that seems wrong. In order to know the different laws concerning the family, having a family lawyer is a great help. A family lawyer can initiate proceeding about family matters, trace a case that has not been dealt, and process the legal action that should be done.

2. Protection of Rights.

Another advantage of having a lawyer is that the whole family is protected. From children to grandparents, from aunts to nieces, everyone is protected, especially when there is an occasion where one of the family member has been taken advantage of. Some of the cases include, the custody of the children, property purchases and disputes, divorce, annulment and so much more.

3. A Credible Resource Person.

A family lawyer is not always just dedicated to winning over a case, they also serve as a confidant and a consultant. Most people have family lawyers that eventually became a part of the family. A family lawyer is professional in term of work but can sympathise with the family. The good thing about it is that they can provide first-hand information in concerns regarding the law. They are some of the most credible people to ask questions for, or they seek help in the different legal processes that come up.

4. Legal Advice

Having a family lawyer enables one to obtain the best legal advice before getting married. Couples are able to make decisions that suite both their interests as well as safeguarding their individual interests regarding prenuptial agreements as well as combining of assets with the help of a competent family law lawyer. In the event of a divorce taking place in future, the couple will be able to get the appropriate legal counsel regarding time sharing and child support of minor children, liabilities and other financial matters from competent family law attorneys.

5. Reduced Costs

Having a family lawyer could potentially reduce the financial and emotional costs that arise from not having a lawyer. Despite the common presumption that paying for the services of a lawyer may be too expensive, not having lawyer may prove more expensive in the long run. For example, an individual not willing to have a lawyer may decide to take his case to court following his or her own ill-advised view and eventually incur more costs both financially and emotionally from the experience.

6. Versatility

Experienced family lawyers are usually predisposed to numerous options regarding different cases. Whereas a client may only have one point of view of the case, the family lawyer may already have several solutions to the dispute in mind. For example, in divorce settlements, various issues often need to be settled such as division of property, spousal support, child custody and child support. Family lawyer often leverage these issues against one another in ensuring they achieve a favorable outcome for both parties and therefore enable both parties to achieve their goals.

7. CONFIDENTIALITY: A family lawyer will always keep family secrets confidential as it is against professional rules of conduct for him to divulge such confidential informations receieved by virtue of his being the family lawyer.

Good info. There's a question l'll like to ask. Having a family lawyer, is it the same as the insurance companies in terms of finance? ls one obligated to be paying in certain amount of money into his acc or the acc of the firm he represents anually and then call him whenever one is in need of his services? Or is it only when he comes to work for one that he gets payed?

there are two types of retainership. general and specific retainership. it depends on the one agreed upon by both parties. in any case parties may agree that annual or monthly payments may be made to the lawyers personal or firms account for the period covered.in is case when ever the individual needs any legal advice/opinion or any legal work he may call upon the lawyer for his services. it is interesting to note that most corporate organisations employ the services of lawyers to help represent and advice them accordingly.

A family lawyer is well versed in probate , criminal and real estate matters and is always at the beck and call of the discerning client. It's also a plus having a lawyer @ hand for sudden incidents eg Police matters. Barrister Mark can be reached on 07037836881 for any questions or request for clarification

Those aforementioned people have their roles to play if they are family members but they cannot play a lawyer's role. I mean Solicitors and Barristers.

Agree they do.But who instigates a criminal proceeding which is more attention calling in Nigeria, then a civil one?The police. He will have to go his way to avoid his family member from reaching the court.

The Magistrate/judge has the discretion to simplify his family member bail,or strike out the case,if it gets to the court.

The military will always have a role to play as well.

Don't forget that a lawyer is not a person that knows the Law,but knows where to find the Law.It is for the court to know the Law and the lawyer can only appeal or keep mute if the ruling and judgment of the court twists to the other side.

He may have his day like you rightly put,but I would prefer my aforementioned professionals. wink

I follow up all news in the judiciary.Judges are not alpha and omega.

But please try to appear before them as some one who is faultless, but railroad by the police and you will know why you need them and the same police that brought you before them,in your family, when your lawyer cannot avert you from being incarcerated, even if it is for an hour.

We have more people in the Bar who should be in Ariaria market. Some lawyers are a disgrace to the legal profession.

Imagine a lawyer disregarding the Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC) and advertising on nairaland?

Please note, being a lawyer is one of the most risky decisions because, the life of any good lawyer is at stake. A lawyer in court is already an enemy to people he doesn't even know. For any sensitive case won, the lawyer has made numerous enemies who could kill him/her at any given opportunity.

In fact, some lawyers are targeted for killing because of cases they won or are handling. I have learned colleagues who are too scared to hang out or visit certain places.

The worst is, the lawyer doesn't even know his numerous enemies.

And who told you that a Lawyer is not he who knows the law? Mind you the attainment of the title legal counsel involves exensive studies of the Law. That's why they are addressed as "Learned Gentlemen". Any cousel that is ignorant of the law is then no certified lawyer. Upon violation of the law, lawyers' verdict are formidable because they are assumed to know thn law by the general public.
