We Didn’t Sack 1,500 Workers - MTN Denies Report by heryourjay(m): 1:48pm On Oct 04, 2016
MTN Nigeria, Monday denied sacking some of its contract staff as reported in some national dailies recently.

Some newspaper and online publications alleged that MTN Nigeria had laid off some of its contract staff, particularly those that work at the telecommunications call centres. The reports claimed that many of the contract staff were given their disengagement letters Wednesday.

The reports also claimed that some of MTN workers in Apapa branch, had their salaries reduced from N120,000 to N40,000 a month and were asked to continue working at their Ibadan office, if they were still interested in the job..

However, in a reaction, MTN said the reports were untrue.

Responding to the reports, MTN Executive, Amina Oyagbola, said; “The reports are incorrect. The second phase of a change-in-vendor process took place last week, offering interested workers the opportunity to join the new call centres owned and operated by the vendor; ISON BPO.

MTN signed an outsourcing contract with ISON BPO Limited in 2015, following a competitive bid process. Indeed, MTN’s call centre operations were outsourced to independent third party agencies since 2008, as part of continued efforts to improve the efficiency and quality of customer service delivery in MTN. This is in line with global best practice for organisations in our industry.”.

Also, ISON Group CEO, Pravin Kumar said: “We have been managing MTN’s call centres since last year when the first phase of the transition was carried out, with the second phase taking place at this time.
“We were pleased to have emerged as the new partner to deliver cost-effective solutions, adopting state-of-the-art technology that supports world-class customer service.

The drive for efficient customer service delivery without compromising on quality within prevailing economic realities comes with structural adjustments and we work to balance this with the need to ensure the sustainability of our operations. We have continued to engage with those who are interested in taking up the opportunity to work with ISON under agreed terms.

At ISON, we remain committed to delivering outsourcing solutions to our clients that also provide thousands of job opportunities to members of the communities in which we operate”.

Sometime in July, all the CCRs were given a letter terminating their contract by the then managers CNSSL. The termination was to take effect on 30th September. While the new managers ISON also served us letters asking for indication of interest to continue working with MTN but at a reduced salary of N48k and at either Ibadan, Ilorin and Abeokuta. That was what happened.

Ridiculous reason...MTN is cash strapped...the problem is the telecommunications sector needs to be regulated atleast to protect the rights of the workers in the sector. Else, more senseless raping of workers rights, salaries and ultimately jobs is lurking around

I don't blame those Telecom companies to some extent, my Maximum blame goes to those that are suppose to monitor and regulate their activities for optimum performance, quality services and a Level playing ground amongst these companies and their subscribers.
NCC should focus more in regulating the Telecom/Communication sector with professionalism and quality driven mentality and charge these companies to render quality services rather than quantity.
.
• How can MTN just stop Xtracool and other services etc, without Months of notice.
• How can Airtel increase One of their Night browsing, stop some generous services, charge 10 when your Transfer Airtime to Airtel numbers etc without informing the public.
• Why on earth should GLO be dishing out Voluminuous Data without improving their network for quality service(s).
• For Etisalat, their selfishness is just out of this world, they never Change.

These are few amongst MANY high grade Incompetences NCC should look into and get things right to some appreciable extent.
It is not enough for them to do their Best, they should do what is Required.

Well what MTN Said is actually the truth though what actually happened is more like sacking. Most MTN staff in Nigeria are contract staff especially the call center agents in Apapa, Ikoyi, VGC and other locations. Most of the staff also in MTN walk-in centers are contract staff also. These contract staff's are managed by Mactay & CNSSL. Last year MTN Claimed that they are spending much money managing and paying these contract staff and decided to lay off Mactay &CNSSL contractors then took up ISON BPO after much bidding like they said. They chose ISON BPO because they offered to manage all call center staff with lowest budget. They told MTN that they will pay N48k(net) as against N100 to N120k previous contractors use to pay and move them to Ibadan, Ilorin and Abeokuta. So MTN saw it reduces call center budget for them that's why they termitted the contract of previous contractors (MACTAY &CNSSL) and give the contract to ISON BPO.
S0 due to the reduction in pay by more that 60%, and the change in location which ISON does not have any plan for accomodation for atleast first 30days, working hours increased, No benefit or allowance paid to them, all the staff decided to quit the job because it's difficult for one to meet their condition(ISON ). These contract staff so to say were doing all the major works in MTN, not only call center, some spent 8yrs some spent 10yrs, 5yrs etc but as their contract was terminated, MTN through their contractors (MACTAY &CNSSL) did not pay extra kobo apart from their last month salary as severance benefit. The contract of the previous contractors ended Sept 30th then ISON took over 1st Oct and they mandated all CCRs to report to Ibadan BTW that first and 3rd Oct.

MTN makes billions of dollars in Nigeria but use Nigerians as slaves to work for them. The current MTN CEO when he came proposed that all MTN Call center agents should be made permanent staff once you've worked up to 2years but some ogas at the top which are Nigerians opposed it. So MTN did not sack their contract staff directly but they did it indirectly.

Tell me 1 company in Nigeria that is made to pay 330Bn fine that didn't carry out structural adjustments? We warned you guys clapping that government slammed MTN with a heavy fine. Government policies looks at lesser evil, the lesser evil was to pardon MTN and give a final warning because of the large number of Nigerians MTN employs. But those who felt MTN was reaping off Nigerians shouted "Fine them, they must pay". Hope those people will employ them in thier Vuvuleza companies to join them to shout!
