Nigerian-American Doctor builds 100 houses for Widows in Anambra
We tend to spend a lot of time complaining about Nigeria. While our complaints are certainly justified, it is important to note that we all have the power to be changemakers.

A Nigerian-American doctor is in the news today as he recently built and donated 100 bungalows for widows and other indigent persons in Umuchukwu, Orumba South Local Government Area in Anambra State.

Dr. Godwin Maduka is the founder of the Las Vegas Pain Institute and Medical Center. Dr. Maduka completed his Graduate Medical training at the Harvard University School of Medicine in Anesthesia and Critical Care and Pain Management.

Beyond his career, he has made it his mission to transform his community in Umuchukwu. Over the last 3 years, he has completed various philantrophic projects including

Donating nearly 100 motorcycles to the unemployed and underprivileged members of his community.
Building and renovation of a police station, barracks, and an updated post office
Construction of schools, homes for widows, hospitals, and religious buildings
Provision of scholarships to community residents to study at universities both in Nigeria and internationally

According to Punch Newspaper,

An excited native of the community said, “Today, there is no more thatched house in the community. Maduka has replaced every thatched house in the area with three or four-bedroom bungalows.

“About 100 of such buildings are currently in place in the community. They belong to the indigent natives, especially widows.

“All such buildings carry green aluminum roofing sheets for easy identification and beautification of the place.”

Maduka explains his philanthropic gesture, saying, “I embarked on all these to save my people from my ugly experience while growing up. I grew up in a home that when it rained, it rained more inside than house.

“Wealth would be meaningless if it cannot be used to better the lives of the people around the custodian.

“The wealthy must provide jobs for the youths; build skills acquisition centres for willing adults, market stalls for men and women, if society must be secure,” he said.

SERI, police excited over Anambra modern court complex

A human rights advocacy group, Socio-Economic Rights Initiative, has expressed delight over a modern high court complex being built in Umuchukwu, a community in the Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

SERI’s President, Mr. Raymond Onyegu, said the modern high court complex, donated to the state by an adjunct clinical professor of Anesthesiology, Pain Management and Surgery, Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Nevada, USA, Dr. Godwin Maduka, would go a long way in enhancing indigenes’ access to justice.

Onyegu, a lawyer, said with the new high court to be inaugurated this month, residents of Umuchukwu and neighbouring towns would no longer have to travel to Aguata, several miles away, to seek judicial redress.

“Our people have problem of access to justice as a result of the distance between here and Aguata Local Government where you have the nearest court. You will have to leave the entire Orumba South, cross Orumba North before you get to Aguata Local Government. Both litigants and lawyers would have to travel that long distance to access justice,” Onyegu said.

He lauded Maduka, an indigene of Umuchukwu, who is now based in the US where he founded and sits as the Chief Medical Director of the six branches of the Las Vegas Pain Institute and Medical Centre, Nevada, USA, for responding to the call of the state government to help in the building of courtrooms in Anambra State.

Onyegu said, “The Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Peter Umeadi, issued a statement encouraging people to assist the government; since the state government doesn’t receive much from the Federal Government, he urged individuals who can afford it to assist the government by building courtrooms. He (Maduka) started first by building a temporary magistrate’s court, complemented with a 30KVA generator. He has gone to build a permanent magistrate’s court and now he’s building the high court…I don’t know how one can describe it because it is unprecedented.”

According to SERI’s President, upon completion, the two-storey modern high court, comprising two courtrooms, two judges’ chambers, offices for the judicial workers and other utility facilities, would be handed over to the state governor, Willie Obiano, who will officially inaugurate it and hand it over to the Anambra State Judicial Service Commission, which will then take over its management.

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Umuchukwu, SP Ugwuagba Ignatus, said the court would further aid the police in carrying out their assignment as the high court would complement the magistrate’s court which the police had found very had found very useful.

“This gesture will really ease our entire policing assignment up to the court,” Ignatus said, noting that security situation in Umuchukwu and neighbouring towns had since received a boost following earlier donations by Maduka of four two-storey buildings, serving as police barrack, patrol vehicles, a bungalow for officers’ quarters and another one-storey building serving as an operation base for the men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad as well as another building for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Umuchukwu.

I laugh at people when they say Ndigbo are not united. We are but the Nigerian factor is a major stumbling block.

Kudos to the man and his community.
Every Igbo community you go have someone who's helping his community in one way or the other.

How I wish other religious leaders who are affluent can emulate this type of development and bring that desired change to their immediate community and stop waiting on the government to do everything.
