I don't know how deep you are in this field, but let me just state 3 simple advantages. I won't go too technical

The assumption here is that you are allowed to choose any freq spectrum by the local regulator

1. Coverage Distance: Frequency is inversely proportional to distance. Meaning the Lower the Frequency the further the coverage distance. So Glo Operating on 700Mhz covers more distance than ntel Operating on 900Mhz & 1800Mhz and both covers more distance than MTN on 2600Mhz using one site

2. Wall Penetration: The lower the frequency the better with wall penetration. So meaning Glo again has an advantage over ntel and ofcourse both have this advantage over MTN in term of wall penetration . Assumprtion is that both are shooting from same site and same Antenna Power. So a typical MTN will have to deploy elaborate indoor solution to Airports, Big hotels , etc to have more seamless LTE coverage on the 2600Mhz

3. Cost : From the 2 above, you can see that MTNN will deploy more sites to cover thesame area covered by one site of ntel and GLO. So in that case, e.g If GLO need about 2000 sites to cover Lagos, MTN might require 6000. This means they will spend much more to achieve thesame coverage, that is the reason they bought and want to use the visafone 800Mhz, but NCC has not allowed them thus far

wow. thanks. I am not even into the field at all but they say knowledge is power. lastly i always ask myself why is it that some phones support one sim but not the other and stuff like that but you have clarified everything for me. Thanks again

Well that is the dilemma they have to overcome now. They need to subsidize devices heavily so that people can use their network

Can you explain why some different bands use same frequency? For instance, bands 12,13,14,17,28,29 all use frequency of 700Mhz... But the frequencies have letters as suffix to differentiate them. Like if one has a device that supports 700mhz from the spec sheet, but I don't know which band it supports. Generally I think best way to know is to actually try the sim.

MTN has 800 band too. MTN LTE has both 800 and 2600 band...

How are you sure MTN is currently using band 20(800)? Because band 7(2600) is the only band MTN mentioned on its website and everywhere else. Though, initially, MTN said it would deploy its LTE over band 20, but since its deployment, only band 7 has been mentioned.

They do...the move to acquire visafone is strictly to have access to visafone's 800 band to roll out LTE. They are silent about it because NCC didn't want them to call it MTN LTE but visafone LTE. In fact, their 800 band LTE has been ready since June. However, both mtn lte and visafone lte require mtn sim. I do not understand why NCC cannot just let that go.

I see. If true, then it's good news to those with devices that support band 20, as they would enjoy better signal quality.

I'm really disappointed, imagine I went to buy a 4g simcard when I got home (after 2hours) i Inserted the simcard in my phone (hot s) hoping to be amazed by the high speed internet I then switched the network to 4g immediately but there was no network at all..

I have been waiting for like 2hours now for the useless 4g network but its still not showing anything.

only to come online and find out that my device dosent support the 4g band the network uses

Note: I modified to post thanks

4g LTE has different network transmission bands.
1,2,3,7,20,21,28 etc.
I think Glo's 4g LTE is only on band 28.
And 90% of phones don't support band 28.
Including infinix hot s.

You are definitely right. I chat wit them to knw d supported band ! I think dey r not ready

LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 7(2600), 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), 41(2500)

If there's anything additional thing I need to know please out me through.. I'd be glad to learn more

What variant of Huawei Mate 7 are you using?

This is for MT7-L09
LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 20(800), 28(700), 40(2300)

While this is for MT7-TL10
LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 7(2600), 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), 41(2500)

This means that if your phone is the MT7-L09 (European version), your phone will support all networks. But if it's MT7-TL10, it won't support all.

You can check your phone variant by checking phone information under settings. Also, the MT7-L09 is single SIM, while the MT7-TL10 is dual SIM.

For the smile modem, since it is unlocked, you're absolutely safe, since you can use any 4G LTE enabled SIM on it.

Its the MT7-TL10 brov sad pretty bad grin

I don't even really like using mobile network on phone - drains battery faster, makes device hot

Its still locked but the seller - my friend will be unlocking it before I pay
Guess the Smile router will solve my device problem of not supporting most 4G bands available in Nigeria then

Before you buy it, find out what other bands it supports apart from 20 (800).

I'm looking to buy a mifi or router, but it has to be one that support band 3, 7, 8, 20, 28 and 40.

My device (Samsung Galaxy Tab S2) supports both MTN bands but not Glo.

But Glo subscription is affordable compared to MTN.
