Africa’s best referee for the past two years Bakary Papa Gassama from Gambia will be in charge of next month’s World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Algeria in Uyo.

Gassama, 37, and who has been an international referee since 2008, is one of the most respected referees in Africa. He has already been appointed as referee for this year’s CAF Champions League final, second leg clash between Zamalek of Egypt and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, taking place in Alexandria on Sunday, 23rd October.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has won a protest it quietly launched following the release of the official match appointment, which set the kick –off time at 5.30pm.

“The information we sent to FIFA was that we wanted the match to start at 5pm; we were surprised when the match appointment was released and the kick –off time was set at 5.30pm. The NFF immediately protested and eventually, on Wednesday morning, FIFA agreed that the match will start at 5pm,” NFF’s director of competitions, Bola Oyeyode, disclosed.

Next month’s Russia 2018 qualifier between two of the fiercest rivals in African football will see Jean-Claude Birumushahu from Burundi as assistant referee 1, Marwa Range from Kenya as assistant referee 2 and Gassama’s compatriot, Maudo Jallow as fourth official.

FIFA have also appointed Jean-Olivier Mbera from Gabon as referee assessor, Ghanaian Anthony Baffoe as match commissioner and Nicholas Chumba Musonye from Kenya as security officer.

Algeria sign ex-Belgium coach Marc Wilmots today:

Nigeria World Cup rivals Algeria are expected to sign a contract with former Belgium coach Marc Wilmots this afternoon.

Wilmots will replace the Serb Milovan Rajevac, who quit his post after Algeria were held to a 1-1 draw at home in a World Cup qualifier earlier this month.

Several top European coaches including Frenchmen Paul Le Guen and Alain Perrin were linked with the top post.

Reports said Wilmots will sign the dotted lines this afternoon in Brussels.

The 47-year-old was in charge of Belgium between 2012 and 2016 after being assistant coach to Dick Advocat and Georges Leeskens.

The former Schalke 04 coach chalked up 34 wins, eight draws and nine losses when he was in charge of the Red Devils.

Incidentally, Algeria won 2-1 when they faced Belgium led by Wilmots at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

more wahala for algeria as :Marc Wilmots rejects Algeria

Ex-Belgium coach Marc Wilmots has rejected a chance to lead Algeria after contract talks collapsed over cash with Frenchman Rolland Courbis now likely to take over Nigeria World Cup rivals.

According to the Algeria News Agency, negotiations between Wilmots and FAF president Mohamed Raouraoua in Brussels broke down over finances with speculations being that the Belgian coach’s asking price was beyond the budget of Algeria.

As a result of this, Frenchman Rolland Courbis has now emerged as the favourite to replace the Serb Milovan Rajevac, who quit his post earlier this month after Cameroon forced Algeria to a 1-1 draw in Blida in a World Cup qualifier.

However, Wilmots has insisted money was not the reason he turned down Algeria.

A Belgian journalist, Thierry Luthers, said he spoke with Wilmots, who denied money was the stumbling block.

The journalist further said the coach told him he could return to national team management “in two, three years” possibly because of how his career as Belgium coach ended in a huge disappointment.

Belgium under Wilmots were one of the leading favourites to win the 2016 Euros in France only for them to fail so miserably.

Wilmots will rather consider returning to club football soon.

Nigeria will get total support against Algeria - supporters' boss:

Super Eagles will get total support to beat Algeria in next month’s World Cup qualifier in Uyo because Nigeria will qualify for Russia 2018, according to the chairman of the supporters club.

“Nigeria must qualify for the World Cup and for that, the 12th man must be united. Peace has returned to the supporters club and we are happy for that,” declared supporters’ club boss Vincent Okumagba, who has personally sponsored the country’s fans’ club.

“We did not go to Zambia because of the wranglings in the supporters club so as not to distract the team.

“Nigeria will be at Russia 2018 and so they will get total support from us to achieve that. We plan that at least 500 registered supporters will be in Uyo to cheer the Eagles to victory.

“We will energise the players for them to go and do Nigeria proud.”

Elections of new leaders of the supporters club has been fixed for December 10 and Okumagba said he is confident of victory.

“I hope to return as national chairman with a landslide victory when we do the elections because I have something to offer after 20 years in the club,” he said.

Eagles vs Algeria 50th Nigeria World Cup home game

Nigeria will play their 50th World Cup home game when they welcome Algeria on November 12 in Uyo, according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In their previous 49 home matches, the Eagles had won 39 and drawn seven, while losing three.

The first home match for Nigeria was on 10th September 1960, when they tied 2-2 with Ghana’s Black Stars in Lagos. The team had earlier lost the first leg 4-1 to the Ghanaians in Accra and crashed out of the race to the 1962 World Cup finals in Chile.

The last was against the Sihlangu of Swaziland at the Adokiye Amiesieamaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on 17th November 2015, in the preliminary round for Russia 2018. Nigeria won 2-0 courtesy of goals by Moses Simon and Efe Ambrose, following a 0-0 draw in Lobamba four days earlier.

The six other drawn matches were against Cameroon on 7th December 1968 (1-1 in Lagos); against Sudan on 13th September 1969 (2-2 in Ibadan); against Tanzania on 6th December 1980 (1-1 in Lagos); against Angola on 18th June 2005 (1-1 in Kano); against Tunisia on 6thSeptember 2009 (2-2 in Abuja) and; against Kenya on 23rd March 2013 (1-1 in Calabar).

The Super Eagles’ three losses were against Ghana on 10th February 1973 (the Black Stars were leading 3-2 in Lagos when the match was abandoned; FIFA awarded it 2-0 to Ghana); against Tunisia on 12th November 1977 in Lagos (1-0 through a first half own goal by defender Godwin Odiye) and; against Algeria on 10th October 1981 (2-0 in Lagos).

However, the Super Eagles have never lost a World Cup qualifying home match played outside Lagos.

In fact, the only times they have failed to win a World Cup qualifying home match away from Lagos was against Sudan (2-2 in Ibadan in 1969); against Angola (1-1 in Kano in 2005); against Tunisia (2-2 in Abuja in 2009) and; against Kenya (1-1 in Calabar in 2013).

Breaking News : Adam Ounas out of Nigeria Clash

The FAF site just announce that Bordeaux youngster,Adam Ounas won't be available for Algeria National team for the clash with Nigeria due to injury.

Having received the player's medical records, everything seems to indicate that the players will be unavailable for few weeks. Thus, the medical staffs of the Club would take no risk and to provide the player for national Assiignment.

The name of the player to replace him has not been mentioned by the national football body.

OFFICIAL: Carl Ikeme out of Algeria World Cup qualifier

Injury has ruled out Nigeria goalkeeper Carl Ikeme from an all-important World Cup qualifier at home against Algeria later this month, officials said.

Ikeme, 30, was forced out of the English Championship game at Blackburn Rovers at the weekend due to a hip injury.

“Yes, he’s out of the Algeria match due to injury,” said spokesman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ademola Olajire.

The player contacted the NFF to inform them of the severity of his injury.

The official said they are now waiting on coach Gernot Rohr to name a replacement for the Wolverhampton Wanderers shot stopper.

Likely replacement would be Olympic team goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel or South Africa-based Daniel Akpeyi, who also deputised for him when he was unavailable for an AFCON clash in Egypt in March due to a stomach problem.

This is a major blow for Nigeria as Ikeme has established himself as the country’s No.1 goalkeeper since his brilliant debut in a 2017 AFCON qualifier in Tanzania in September 2015.

He was the man of the match after he made several big saves for Nigeria to beat hosts Zambia 2-1 in Ndola last month in an opening World Cup qualifier.

Daniel Akpeyi gets late Eagles call-up to replace Ikeme

South Africa-based goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has been handed a late call-up by Nigeria following injury to No.1 choice Carl Ikeme.

Former youth international Akpeyi is a direct replacement for Super Eagles number one, Carl Ikeme, whose English club Wolverhampton Wanderers wrote to the Nigeria Football Federation that he would be unavailable as a result of injury.

In March, he also deputised for Ikeme in Egypt, when he was not available due to a stomach complaint.

Akpeyi, who stars for Chippa United, was in the Nigeria U20 squad that finished as runners –up at the 2005 FIFA U20 World Cup in the Netherlands, and was also in the bronze –winning U23 team at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament in Brazil in August this year.

The Super Eagles take on the Fennecs of Algeria in Uyo on Saturday, 12th November, in a Matchday 2 clash of the African race for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
