The reason why we all stay awake every time Champions League come calling is because there is always something special. It is always great to see your club get through to the last sixteen regardless of the manner in which the qualification takes place. It is however disappointing to see your team drop to Europa League after failing to make the cut.

However, the story of last year European season lies with Arsene Wenger side Arsenal. Would you believe it? They qualified even after losing their first two group games. Let’s have a look at how they did it as well as other 3 group stage heroics over the years.

4. Arsenal- 2015/16


Everybody thought it’s done and dusted for Arsenal after they lost their first 2 group games against Dinamo Zagreb (2-1) and Olympiacos (3-2). The later came as a shock because it was at Emirates Stadium.


However, Arsene Wenger pulled a master stroke by beating Bayern Munich 2-0 at home but a 5-1 lose in Germany damaged their chances. The Frenchman was not giving up the fight just yet, he knew a win against Zagreb at home and away to the Greeks will be enough to qualify because it was obvious that Guardiola was too proud to lose to the two teams. All came to pass and Wenger has had the last laugh.

3. FC Porto-2003/04

We came to know who Jose Mourinho was in 2003/04 season that time coaching Portuguese giants FC Porto. A single point after two games was clearly a disastrous position for ‘The Special One’ especially after a heavy defeat to Real Madrid at home in their second game.
