With the huge discrepancy between the official bank rate and the black market, only fools still send money to Nigeria via transfer. I am not exonerating these guys but trust me, a lot of dollars and other hard currencies are coming to Nigeria in envelopes. There are a lot of Nigerians abroad with legitimate cash to send home, but they are just looking for someone trustworthy travelling back to Nigeria to move the cash for them. undecided undecided undecided
there are 3rd party money transfer
where I live no one uses bank transfer . Beaides If U nor get paper u nor fit go bank to transfer money shaa

May be their offense was not declaring the money upon entrance, but that shouldn't lead to confiscation. How many Nigerian politicians have declared their loots? Buhari promised he and his ministers would be declaring their assets, but 2 years in his tenure no public declaration of assets.
.
It shouldn't lead to confiscation? Well that is the law in Nigeria and many other countries. Even in the countries where they came from.

This would not be the first time such money would be seized in Nigerian airports but people continue and when caught try to evoke sentiments

It's interesting how everyone is saying they should have declared it,thinking that it's the be and end of.

It doesn't just end there simply because you have declared it,you will have to provide bank statements/documentations to back up your claims, which I doubt anyone here can provide just like that.

They should have looked for someone in Europe that want to sell a house in Nigeria, then they can pay him/her here and they can go sell the house themselves in naija voula their problems are solved, except that they were intending on selling the hard currencies on black market for profits.

They're on their own now o,even though I do not believe the news, for the fact that I know that European airports are well equipped to detect these things.

I doubt this news.

Well, I was of the impression the law applies to outflows not incoming funds. Still, we need to find out whether the law also apply to citizens of countries you mentioned who can prove their funds have no ties with criminal origin.

Say something meaningful.........

The said money might come from a legitimate means and it may also owned by several people as they claimed, so don't label them fraudsters...

The law is about declaration full stop.Nothing to do with source of money if there is criminality that is an entirely different matter and channel. If you carry more than $10000 through our airports you MUST DECLARE IT. Failure to do so means a liability to forfeiture and possible prosecution. It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the legitimacy of the funds. That is something else

What nonsense!

Why arresting them now?
No drug was found on them and u are tagging them as drug peddlers.

This is just 1% of what our politicians launder on a regular basis.

Who knows, these guys might have wanted to setup a pure water factory in their villages.

There is no limit to the money you can bring into the country BUT you must declare it and failure to do so makes the money liable to seizure PLUS possible jail time.No story!

My brother you have a good point but let me tell you trust me never declare money at Nigeria airport. A cousin of mine was coming into Nigeria, then she was coming in with about $45,000 which she declared.

She was robbed on the drive from Airport there in Ikeja, they trailed her towards Protea Hotel in GRA and robbed her.

How did they know she had such money , she said when they pointed the gun they asked her where is the $45,000 dollars you came with?

Only i and my mum knew she had this money and off course her BF there abroad.

See i cant blame them for being scared

I

I agree with that but there is a solution. Open a domiciliary account,I believe there is Zenith Bank at the airport, they offer domiciliary accounts. So if you must bring cash then go to the bank and pay it in. if you arrive early wait till they are open or schedule your flight accordingly

TWO you can actually transfer money from anywhere in the world to a domiciliary account in Nigeria . It is very cheap and in some cases there is absolutely NO CHARGE at all.

People often do things because they lack information and do not use government well. There are many legitimate traders and importers why do not not talk to their elected representatives. so that they have regular dialogue and sharing of problems. Many of our problems exist because people are in the dark.

I do not know about sending money abroad but sending money to a bank account in Nigeria is so easy .Of course if the money is more than $10000 you may still be asked to account for the source and maybe that is what some people are running from.Who knows?

Very true but irrelevant assertion. There is a legal aphorism
Ei incumbit probatio qui dicit, non qui negat (the burden of proof is on the one who declares, not on one who denies

No one can be asked to prove that a thing does not exist. Rather it is incumbent on he who asserts to prove it exists not he who denies to prove that it does not.

exactly the same way those criminals in Uniform stole £20k from my brother returning back from Amsterdam, those criminals denied stealing the money, CCTV replay later implicate them, instead of them to own up, admit wrong doing, they divert the story to drug trafficker and money launderer , thank God the guy is legit because he declare the money in Schiphol Airport... so person no fit carry money from abroad come Nigeria... This your reasoning nah waoo... so if i want to send money home may be to finish my project I should first of all start looking for someone who wants to sale his house and what happens when the seller wants to use the money in nija...he should also look for another who also want to sale his house...chai !!

Did you see the total amount?even in Europe that money will be seized if you do not produce legit source of it.

Over here the maximum amount one can send at a time is €5k and must produce required documentations.

I think money laundering. .... people do bring money for others... but that amount? Then the guy works in a bakery for 15 years...fine... but frequent travels would always raise suspicions.

my emphasis is on "looking for someone who wants to sale his house " meaning you need to travel all over Europe to look for someone who puts his house for sale before you can send money home

Na!there are those that specialised in these things, you need to know people.i have a friend that lost over 5million euro to the authorities over here, money laundering is a serious issue right now globally, even the person that'll be selling the house is taking a big risk too, because everything will be done cash at hand.

My honest opinion?if that news is real,I will say those guys are either fraudsters or drug dealers,in Europe no one would entrust their money onto anyone in the name of going to naija.

Those guys were ignorant as Bleep.
