In a country like Nigeria, where there are many different lines dividing the people such as culture, religion and ethnic group; where even among those of perceived similar tribes there are still slight differences. Like how a Delta man swears he is not Igbo and is nothing like them. Or the Fulani and Hausa women insist that they’re not the same and very different. In such a country brimming with variety of people it is no surprise that there would naturally be very diverging opinions on various matters. Especially one as significant as political ideologies and choices. I use the term ideologies loosely because to be honest, in the Nigerian political setup there aren’t many defined ideologies on how people want the country to be run.

Most folks pretty much just want their people in power in the hope that they can derive some form of benefit from government, be it financial or otherwise. In short, unlike in England for instance, where there are the liberals or conservatives who have some form of set of ideas on how they expect the country to function, in Nigeria it is mostly just PDP vs APC right now. No one really has a set of values they adhere to. To make matters worse, the constant crossing over from one camp to the other by politicians has blurred the lines on who exactly is on each side.

Now the focus of this article stems from the recent bomb blast in Maiduguri, Borno state in on the 12th of this month. The bomb blast occurred shortly after news that 21 of the Chibok girls abducted over 2 years ago by the terrorist sect, Boko Haram, had been released. The news was shocking and cut short the prevailing joyful mood in the country, marring the erstwhile celebrations upon the release of the girls. Now one would expect that the general thoughts surrounding two such events would be sorrow for the girls and the ordeal they must have been through and joy at their release, and grief for the families of those who lost their lives as a result of the bomb.

Unfortunately some people in our country are so blinded by their perceived political loyalty that they couldn’t see fit to drop political affiliations for even a day to console with the deceased and hope for a better future for the girls. On social media, especially Twitter, a vast number of supporters of the opposition party spent most of the time after the release of the girl and the bomb blast trying to create theories and blame the ruling party.

All I’m saying is, if you want to show we Nigerians on the proverbial fence, that your party is the right way to go in the next elections, then show us with mature constructive criticism. Come up with possible solutions for the failings of the government and offer advice or alternatives to their approaches, instead of just whining and screaming ‘I told you so’ like a child whose opinions were ignored. It is particularly annoying to me that the majority of those who are taking it upon themselves to rub in the plights of others into our faces to show that they were right are the so called leaders of tomorrow. If by now, we youths who should be planning on how to clean up the huge mess that our forbears are leaving to us can not do so by looking beyond politics and party for the good of Nigeria as a whole, then the only way for Nigeria in the near future is down.
