Actually Kenya is chock full of good news. This kind of news is the norm, rather than the exception here. Most of what folks read on NL is peddled by faceless and nameless morons and is raggedy gossip culled from like minded websites and sleazy media masquerading as "news". ...
That being said, it's always a pleasure to see medical science make advances, and even better to see people who only a few decades ago, would have almost certainly not make it to live productive lives on account of physical deformity. Kudos

This is so awesome.... smiley Great one Kenyans....

But this is not the first successful conjoined twins surgery done in Africa.

The first or one of the first was done by Ben Carson and a team of Zambian and South African doctors and more in South Africa. It was the case of the banda boys.

They were conjoined twins also albeit Craniopagus conjoined kind.

This one from kenya is Omphalopagus conjoined kind.

Craniopagus and Omphalopagus are both kinds of conjoined conditions seen in certain twins who joined together. Another is Thoracopagus(joined at the chest) and Thoraco-omphalopagus (joined at chest and upper/lower abdomen).

So in all.... Great news and awesome achievement all the way from the land of Kenyatta, home to top schools like Egerton, Jomo kenyatta and more. smiley

Kudos.... But this isn't the first successful conjoined twins separation surgery done on African soil.

I know a particular clinic with exact same theatre like the one pictured above with C-arm here in Nigeria. The theatre is working perfectly well and correct surgeries are taking place right there in Lagos.

We have experts in Nigeria. Though most of them are not fully based here but they perform the surgeries here, I tell you.

Have no shame cheesy, we'll soon see amazing wonders come out from our theatres right here in Nigeria.

We have experts ....
But they are not based here

This information is not true. My Grandfather Mr. Vincent Davies was the first to have a recorded cojoined twins in Nigeria that underwent seperation, although one of them died, while the other survived. Skin from the dead twin was used to patch up the living one. Is Nigeria not in Africa again?

Who posted this rubbish? pls edit it,this is not the first co joined twin to be separated in Africa, the first co joined twins separation by an African doctor, was actually done in Nigeria in enugu in 1956,besides 2 separation were even carried out in Nigeria this year,i don't know what is wrong with nairaland indomie generation, they will never fact check but instead choose to believe anything they read online,co joined twin separation has been done in Unth enugu,Uth ibadan, luth, lagos, sokoto, since 1936.

The first co joined twins separation in Nigeria was a surgery by an Irish doctor Dr
McLaren in Sokoto General Hospital in 1936

The first Nigerian doctor to successfully separate co joined twins was Dr ikpeme at Enugu General Hospital in1956

See list of such surgeries in Nigeria since 1936 below

Don't mind them. Conjoined twins were separated in OAU teaching hospital precisely in 2001. The team was led by Prof Adejuyigbe

Re: Kenyan Doctors Separate Conjoined Twins: First In Africa by OAUTemitayo: 1:20pm On Nov 03, 2016
Surgeons at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife in Osun Sate have successfully separated a set of siamese twins with a common anus and fused lower spine.
Siamese twins are usually identical, sometimes sharing organs. fusion in mostly along the trunk or at the head When both are normal, except for fusion, surgical separation is sometimes possible.
The name siamese twins refers to the two men from siam, the former name for the Gulf of Thailand, named chang and Eng. They were joined by a fleshy band in the waist region despite this, they lived an active lie and each fathered several children.
In a seven hour surgical procedure, a team of surgeons at the OAUTHS on Monday May 6, 2002, made the breakthrough in the separation in Sub-Saharan Africa. The medical team was led by the colloge's provost, Professor Sanya Adejuyigbe, a consultant paediatric surgeon.
The breakthrough was disclosed last week Thursday by the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Professor David Olayinka Akinola. Other members of the team of surgeons were: Dr. A. O. Sowande, (Paediatric Surgeon), Dr. J.K Olabanji, (Plastic Surgeon); Dr. Lawrence Akinyoola, (Orthopaedic Surgeon); Dr. Fola Fiponle, (Anaesthesiologist) and Dr. E. A Komolafe (Neuro-Surgeon).
The obviously happy parents of the siamese twins, Mr. and Mrs Ajayi Owoeye expressed gratitude to God and the management of the teaching hospital for making the feat possible.
According to a report by the hospital's Public Relations Officer Mr. Olu Bello, the twins are stable and are doing well in one of the wards of the hospital. In recent times, remarkable success has been achived across the globe in the seperation of siamese twins.
Last month, a 24-year old mother, Mrs. Rose Cupata gave birth to siamese twins at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta, one died during delivery. Quite often, most siamese twins in Nigeria die shortly after birth. In most successful cases, one twin is sacrificed for the other. For example, recently in Britain a siamese twin girl survived a controversial operation to separate her from her sister after the latter's death. Doctors had said that without surgery both three-month-old twins would eventually have died. They carried out the operation to save Jodic, the stronger twin, knowing that separation was bound to end the life of her weaker sister, Mary. However, medical reports have shown that the chances of a successful operation of siamese twins who share one heart, are very slim. Profesor Lewis Spitz of Great Ormond Street Hospital London, United Kingdom-said that without an operation, both twins still certainly die. Spitz, a world expert in twin separation said in the Britain Medical Journal that of blood vessels surrounding the heart was virtually impossible." Construction of a heart to sustain even one baby would be equally difficult, he said. No babies in the same situation have ever survived long-term. Commenting on the feat, a plastic surgeon at the National Orthorpaedic Hospital Enugu, Dr. Uche Achebe told The Guardian that the OAUTHS separation was commendable. He however noted that records have shown that siamese twins do not get to live long after separation.
However, with the experience and qualification of the team of surgeon, and most importantly an element of divinity, I hope the twins will live on after the separation," he said.

Just to clarify a certain misinformation, it's not the first surgery on Cjoined twins. That's been done even in Kenya before. Joint heads, joint bellies and so on. These two were joined at the spine.

Perhaps the doctors her can tell us what that meant

Sixty Kenyatta National Hospital specialists have successfully separated Siamese twins born two years ago, in a 23-hour operation that was the first in Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa.

The sarcophagus twins born at a Meru hospital were joined at the sacral region of the lower spine.

Head of pediatric surgery Fred Kabuni said on Wednesday that the main aim of the procedure was to separate the babies, close their wounds and create stomachs for them.

He said they will undergo four more reconstructive surgeries after their wounds heal.

"I am very proud of my team. The journey had been long but successful," he said. "The twins will be checked after one month."

Kabuni said they waited two years to perform the surgery to allow the development of key organs, and muscle strong enough for surgery.

The twins are recovering at the hospital's intensive care unit.

Among those involved in the surgery were plastic surgeons, anaesthetists, neurosurgeons and nurses.

They said they will reconstruct the children's skins, Instruments, anal canal and bowel in subsequent operations.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has congratulated the joint medical team that conducted a 23-hour surgery and successfully separated conjoined twins, aged two years.

The team comprised medical professionals from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and the University of Nairobi’s School of Health Sciences.

The surgery is one of the continent's first, and given that it was conducted at KNH'S main theatre, it is testimony to the vast improvement in the quality and capacity of Kenya's public hospitals.

QUICK RECOVERY

The President on Thursday also wished the twin girls a quick recovery and all the best as they embark on life after the surgery.

He thanked the medical team for their outstanding work, dedication and a great sense of civic duty.

The joy of the mother, relatives and family friends of the girls is shared by the whole nation and beyond, he said.

The twins can now talk and respond to their mother, Nairobi News reports.

The hospital’s acting CEO Thomas Mutie on Wednesday said the children had been admitted at the Specialised Surgical Paediatric Ward for more than two years to allow development of key organs and also enable them to gain appropriate muscles to withstand the surgery.

PATIENTS STABLE

“Surgery of this nature usually required planning and regular consultation by a multi-disciplinary team of KNH and School of Health Sciences, UoN specialists to exchange ideas on how best to perform the procedure while minimizing the risk of either paralysis or neural damage,” said Dr Mutie.

He added that the children were stable and are receiving specialised care as medics monitor their progress.

“We are confident that they will fully recover and live normal independent lives to adulthood,” said Dr Mutie.

Dr Mutie thanked the team for conducting what he called the “first ever sarcophagus surgery in Africa” with great dedication.
