My point is to answer your qquestion: are there unregistered nurses? Which shows you don't understand the meaning of a Registered Nurse (RN) and I have tried to explain it to you.

I guess if this gesture can be done to a male Nurse, I trust what will happen, either the doctor wake up from hospital bed or remain in Coma by now! They only do such to Female Professional Nurses... Just from a CONCERN CITIZEN I guess this people should be caution

Some of the comments are bewildering to say the least.

DrP2000:
The whole story is one sided and fishy, so a Doctor just started beating a nurse by 5am because she corrected him, pls this is story for the God. The earlier you know your senior and superior in profession the better for you. Nobody forced you to be a nurse, so be contended with what you chosed for yourself and not antagonising or beefing others. He is the head of your team, so learn to take orders from him or her. I thank God for the kind of training Doctors receive in medical college which makes them humble because if not worst scenarios will be occurring. While medical practice teaches you to be humble and accept insults even from patients, I wonder if nurses are taught the same , from the way they attend to patients will show you they are not happy with their profession. Let's wait for the second version of the story and not this media sympathy or attention seekers. Panels must be set to handle the matter and both of them will be penalised if found wanting but the nurses will always support their own even if she is wrong. Ask your self have you ever seen a nurse criticise her fellow nurse in open , why, but Doctors have nothing to hide and knowing fully well that human life is involved will caution the fellow doctor immediately, so why doctors are battling to save life, nurses are busy saving and.packaging their profession.which one is more important (the patient life or your profession)

pheyikemi:
There's always two sides to a story, let's hear the other side. I doubt if a doctor will just pounce on u and beat u cos u corrected him. Aint right and d story is fishy. This doctor-nurses beef shd end biko, u all av different training and different roles to play to make ur patients better.

Chrisrare:
d nurse must hav made her point in a disrespectful manner dat provoked d doc.

frenchwine:
Ask me how I knw this story is very biased to the left and one sided?
It came from nursing world blog.
Ok on a more serious note , I'm not gonna hold the forte for a doctor collegue who assaults a co-woker, nay a patient but read the story between the lines and you'd understand a few things :
> This isn't the first time she has been on his neck, you don't wanna work with a nagging nurse, worse still on night duty, trust me
> They have had it coming long before
> She most likely criticised him in a disrespectful and demeaning manner , perhaps in the presence of patients
> The doc has a temper problem
Definitely the doc would face our disciplinary panel (MDCN) but the nurse should be suspended from he hospital cos we know NANNM would let the matter slide

xtremer:
Would it be acceptable if the nurse was unregistered

ImoRiver:
That nurse is crazy. What does she even know?

Firstly, yes 'registered nurse' is the correct way to refer to a nurse. Officially in many jurisdictions nurses sign their names with the suffix 'RN', meaning 'registered nurse'. So please in the future, try to ask google prior to attempting to appear smart.

Secondly, last time i checked, assault is a crime so before we even talk of unions or professional discipline, the doctor really should be questioned and detained by the police.

Thirdly, some people seem to think that verbal provocation or 'disrespect' is reason enough to lay hands on another individual. If you think this way, then you ere. Assault is a crime punishable by law. So your opinions on the reason for provocation is irrelevant.

The doctor should lose his license and face the law courts. It will be a good deterrent for others. In the future if one is provoked verbally then ignore it or retaliate similarly if you're feeling unprofessional but please don't lay hands on anybody.

The amount of ego centrism, elitism, paternalism and chauvinism displayed by many doctors is a problem. It needs to be addressed head on. Medicine is hard we know, nurses are 'bad' we know, patients are thankless we know, system is useless we know. But seeing as you're the best and brightest of the country, intellectually superior and appointed to lead the health system, perhaps when you lead with compassion and professionalism others would follow suit.

Now I believe some Nigerians really do have issues.

Some comments are so annoying, somebody was assaulted and the only thing some peeps can say is "the earlier you know your superior in the profession the better for you". I thought medical workers are trained to work under pressure, what brought superior into a matter of assault.

No matter what, the doctor had no right to beat up the nurse, even if she insulted him, you report to the appropraite authorities. As long as it is established that he did beat her up, then he is wrong, no matter the provocation there's no justification whatsoever for what he did.

And to even think some people are turning it to a doctor vs nurses case again is annoying, superior my foot one day he will beat his patient up then if provoked since he feels superior to the patient ...... nonsense

I have seen patients treated badly by health workers, They will all be doing as if they were forced to be a health worker.

The nurse should personally sue him for assault,

This same set of people will go out of the country and they dare not behave to patients the way they do here.

Nonsense.

Going through the comments and I'm like what?? For real?

It's high time people understand that nursing is a profession. No! Nurses are not beneath doctors and there is no hierarchy between nurses and doctors. Both are different professions. If the doctor didn't treat or handle the woman in labour properly, it is the nurse's responsibility to caution him and advocate for the patient. I am shocked by the amount of people defending the doctor's actions, so if the doctor was upset about the way she made her point, the next thing is to descend on her?

Health care is a team task like soccer: each wing with its role but d captain can be any player and the midfielder can never be rated or compared with the goal keeper or striker. Why should different set of professionals be compared?
Some heads are just undecided

which part again? He has no JUSTIFICATION OR WHATSOEVER TO BEAT UP ANYONE, HE IS A DOCTOR, IT IS OBVIOUS HE IS A BAD DOCTOR, A BAD HUSBAND, A WOMAN BEATER. SO IF THE PATIENT WAS RUDE TO HIM ALSO HE WILL BEAT HIM/HERE UP? LET'S FACE THE FACT HERE. A NURSE IS A PATIENT ADVOCATE, SHE US NOT SUBSERVIENT TO ANY PROFESSION. HEALTH WORKERS SHOULD WORK IN A COLLABORATIVE WAY.

Educate yourself, a Doctor is not superior to a nurse. A nurse is a nurse's superior and a Dr, a Dr' superior. They are both two very different professions working towards same goal.
And she has the right to correct a mistake he makes, she is her patient's advocate, and this will ensure the safety of the patient.
That is why it is called team work, what use is the team when you can catch and correct each others mistakes?
Some Drs make deadly mistakes cos of this silly ego, that they are more knowledgeable when infact he is wrong.

I'm sure you will talk this way if the nurse was a relative of yours. Some Nigerians and their silliness, justifying violence

when mofons talk you will know!!! when you send a baffon to school for 6yrs you will get a baffon raised to power 6.for maffons that keep saying superior here you are an educated illiterate.1 ;A DR is not any RN superior cos the two professions are independent of each other.
2; A RN is a patients advocate. No matter how the nurse corrected the Dr he has no right under the LAW, PROFESSIONALISM , VOODOOISM , to lay a finger on the Nurse .its against the law and even the civil service rule.
3the Dr was lucky that he didn't met a male nurse like some one said we would have seen his burial poster here.

For Godsake what is wrong with these Dr their mates abroad are busy breaking grounds Our own Dr here are busy dragging positions
