Do anyone know the SUV that could easily be maintained in Nigeria?

I want to buy SUV and ship to Nigeria but I need to be sure it can easily be maintained.

I don't care much about spare parts, I can buy and ship those, I am more concern about the mechanics skills.

I am thinking of RANG ROVER 4.6HSE or Cherooke 4.7

Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by casper(m): 5:09pm On Jan 06, 2007
that range is a crazy car men.

i never believed in llove at first sight until i saw it.

range is on the high side but it never goes out of date. it is more advisable to get it.
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by promise72(m): 6:45am On Jan 07, 2007
in my opinion both are wrong choices. you should get a 4runner of landcruiser.

Even though you dont care about spare parts now you will later. downtime from waiting for the part. a toyota is the only vehicle i know that can be fixed in any part of the world. Next time you watch videos from afganistan, iran or iraq you see how many toyota there is. In the desert of Saudi, kuwait etc its L/Cruiser all the way. They can afford a jeep of rover but they know better.

Even if you can get the parts, consider a scenario that you were travelling in the miidle of nowhere and broke down, it will be easier to call someine to get parts and fix it in the city that the car broke down at than towing the car all the way to lagos or wherever to get to a qualified mechanic.

Is a 4runner or cruiser as presigious as a rover? No! But the total cost of running a rover/jeep (gasoline, service etc) will be waaaayyyyyy more than a toyota.

Buy smart.

Toyota land Cruiser, 4-runner are the best in terms of total ownership costs.
Nissan Pathfinder /Nissan Patrol are all cool. Also Pajero are all cool maintenance wise.
I have a mid 90s Pajero and it is cool. All those rovers , cherokee, fords and chevrolets are expensive to manage.

the best car for nigeria is hummer.u guys should check it out men!
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by funkybaby(f): 1:01am On Jan 09, 2007
Any toyota branded SUV will do. Dont make the mistake getting any other SUV for nigerian roads. You might not worry now about the cost of getting the spares but what about the headache of getting a good mechanic that will not eat deep into your pocket or that will turn your car into his weekly source of income. You could get a very 'bad' toyota SUV that will turn heads any day.
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by Multitask(m): 7:36pm On Jan 09, 2007
Jeeps are the best kind of vehicles for the Nigerian roads.
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by rock2(m): 11:06am On Jan 10, 2007
Well, I think if you want a car you can easily maintain in Nigeria, it's best if you buy from a dealer here in Nigeria that provides after sales services. if you ship an uncommon car into the country, you might also have to ship in the parts and the mechanics.
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by Saddam: 4:04pm On Jan 10, 2007
I would go for a range, Its a nice SUV

We have got their repair/auto workshop center in 9ja courtesy Coscharis
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by vizion: 4:35pm On Jan 10, 2007
in term of availability of good techinal skills try out a beamer
they got a good loaded (computerised) service center in the major cities of the country
there u can get specialist working on ure vehicle instead of those artisans using ure car for trial and error
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by daprince: 4:53pm On Jan 10, 2007
Hey dude, BUY SMART! as one of the posters here said ealier. My Psychology professor once said, "those who drive hummers only show to the world that they got more money than brains." Her rationale for this was that, hummers (like H2) give like 10 miles/gallon and they are damn expensive to maintain. Anyway dawg, I know it's aight to go prove to people back home that "you've arrived" by driving a beamer, land/range rover, hummer, or jeep. But buying an american car (jeep, ford, chevy, etc) would be a dumb mistake. Go with a TOYOTA cuz the shit is cost effective. The gas mileage is damn good and parts are available everywhere. If u keep ur car clean, u still gonna get the respect u want or conquer all the ladies u wanna conquer. No be by car oooooooo, na ur demeanor na im matter most!

I would say, definately do not buy the cherokee for too many obvious reasons as stated by others, but you might want to consider the range rover sport as an alternative to the fully loaded range rover. It costs half the price for starters, carries the same brand name, and is just as tough and luxurious.
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by waleleader(m): 12:15am On Jan 11, 2007
This is a great thread, I was thinking of asking a similar question just this morning
@babasin, it seems we have the same taste in automobile, these two cars are on my mind, especially the Grand cherokeee Jeep.
i know the after sale service and all that palaver is much, but i am definitely buying one. I am not being disobedient or wasteful, its just that i love that car beyond measure and i would be happy to drive it in Naija even if its only for one day. its the passion man.
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by waleleader(m): 12:18am On Jan 11, 2007
@obua, do u mean that u can get Jeep partsĀ  and services in Nigeria *even though it may be expensive*

i think one of my neighbours in Lag used to drive one

Guys,
Many thanks. My head is really spining.

One last question, which I forget. I have not been to naija in years, so I need to get something worthwhile; just cant visit and hire taxis.

I would only visit Nigeria twice in a year in total 4wks. So this car will just be parked.

I know it sound crazy, but am told to atleast have my OWN car in naija. BTW, I have properties too. I am really lost.
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by promise72(m): 3:06am On Jan 13, 2007
Well,

let me lie to you for a minute. If thats the case, i suggest you find a cheap car (Corolla, primera, Accord) and leave it in Niaja. Cos even if you thing its safe, you have to flip your thought what if,

Suppose your little Bro go joyriding with it and its crashed, stolen etc youll rather lose a car under 1mill than a ride worth up to 3 mill or more depending on what you get.

Any fancy car should not be left in Naija in NOBODY's care if you dont go home often. Keep honest people honest.

If im your bro and im watching your car sit there. Will i be tempted to leave it alone, catch okada or i will be tmpted to ride it. I promise to be good and be care but as the saying goes "all days is for the thief, one day for the owner"

Then you get a call "Em Brother, em em em your car, em em em"

Keep a nice ride at home only if you live there.

Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by Yago(m): 1:35am On Jan 14, 2007
Their is a really nice article on this subject in a new forum I joined. I think the winner in that article was a simple Jeep Cherokee you can check the article out here http://www.Nigerians.us
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by TopeFl(m): 4:06am On Jan 14, 2007
I would say the Dodge Ram Quad cab 1500 V8 Hemi. That is tough and all the power u need, also the Ford 2005 F-150 Lariat. Problem is that they shach fuel but u get satis faction in power and convenience on naija roads.

@ babasin
promise72 is right. If you intend packing the car in naija for that long, do not waste your time on anything fancy. This can be a very tough choice to make taking into consideration how financially bouyant you are and also the kind of car your friends and family in nigeria will be expecting you to ride. Try hard and ignore this factors and get something small, Probably not worth than 500-600k naira. I have a close friend whose situation fits yours. He came to nigeria 2004 with a BAD honda accord. He left the car in care of his darling elder sister with instructions that the car should be used by her only on sundays. I saw the car last year december. I was shocked. The car had been dented, panel beated, cracked windscreen, Just terrible. Apparently, the woman's kids were cruising every where with the car. What could my friend do?? The car was in such a sorry state that he could not drive it throughout his vacation in nigeria. In summary, make a wise choice. Dont trust anyone here to help you 'maintain' your car worth more than 2million naira. Even if the person has his or her own car, there is always the temptation to cruise yours more often. ( What the hell-the owner no dey here, Thats the average Nigerian mentality! )

@funkybaby
Yes. I will be getting LandRover Discovery, 1999 Model. I plan to tour Nigeria for two wks and park the car at home.
I will disable the tyres and take back with me the car-keys. And when I visit again and see any problem with Car. I will simply cut-off from everyone.
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by promise72(m): 12:50am On Jan 20, 2007
hey,

sounds like a good idea but one problem though. What if the car needs to be moved? Let me tell you a quick story. When i was growing up, there was a big "Area bro" in the town . His mom dont let him touch the car (2 benzs) to be exact, even though he can drive. Then one day, there was a fire in the house, happen to start around the garage. area guess whats in d garage? cheesy you guessed it. The almighty BENZO. No one around to move 'em except that Bro cos the mom dont know how to drive (you know how those rich alhaja are? Driver all the time) it happened in the evening, Driver already went home.

To cut a long story short, the Bro yanga for a while and eventually moved them and since that day he earned his unlimited access the cars. grin

ITS NOT ADVISABLE to leave that type of cars in Niger with to key with anyone but u overseas. Yuo never know. However, you can always take a chance.
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by funkybaby(f): 1:35pm On Jan 20, 2007
@babasin

not a bad idea at all. but them go talk about you behind your back o! that you removed your tyres and took the keys back with you, lol, but seriously, it is a very good idea. dont worry about any fire disaster or accident, your car is covered with the blood of jesus. secondly, i strongly advise you not tom use "car cloth cover" <i cant remember the name it is called > to cover the car. this is because, the car can easily be vandalised <internally> and it might pass the attention of your tenants for months. you can tip any of your nephews or cousins to help you wash and wax the car at least once in a month for you. that way, it will still maintain its shine.

you are choosing Land Rover, erghhhh,
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by marhoatumu(m): 6:14pm On Jan 22, 2007
dont even think of a hummer, it goes through fuel like a hungry nigerian goes thru a plate of eba. i'll recommend any of the toyota brands or nissan. their parts are readily available and they dont swallow fuel, they sip it
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by phoenixman: 4:14am On Jan 23, 2007
ha ha ha " a hungry nigerian goes through a plate of eba" cheesy cheesy cheesy

love the simile.
Re: Best SUV For Nigeria? by seun70(m): 3:09pm On Jan 23, 2007
Hey Bro,
The choice is yours - It depends on the reason why you want an SUV. I believe any nice vehicle would do since you would not be visiting frequently. If you have your own place where you'll be able to park the vehicle until you'll visit home again - Vogue would be nice.
I am in london, before i finished my house, i used Honda (Halla) + Acura Legend (Parked at my uncles) now that I have my own place I sent home millenium cherokee jeep + with a tracker ( I am monitoring it from here in the uk).
In a nutshell, it depends on you.
