All this useless Govt Officials using different monikers to post nonsense on threads their father didn't post here. Don't masterbate to us about tax cause you don't believe we are all drop outs here like you who only use the Internet data for twitter and facebook alone. Don't get to dragged like a pig my friend.

On the subscriber part, social media is not a need. You do not suffer any loss of quality living if your social media tools are taken away. So it is individual preference and choice to use facebook, use tweeter, use nairaland and other multimedia tools. It is in same grade of utility as owning a car. The government has not blocked accessibility to social media. Everyone that wants to use it can if they will afford the price of using it.

Your input is misguided. What you ought to advocate is a close monitoring of the extra income generated from increased pricing and how it translates into improved coverage, quality and delivery for the consumer. Also, if the FIRS is able to report on the increase in taxed income of service providers and benefit to society.

Consumer advocates collect data at the user input level and use it to influence policies that will shape behaviors of providers. Be a good consumer advocate!

@ Op u are very correct. Am still not convinced with the excuse given by the NCC chairman, about Nigeria paying lesser on data, in contrast to other africa nation. Even if we pay less, it should be a thumbs up to the government or has has the ideology of government of today change to making the people miserable. The Telecom coys are not complaining abt offering more for less when compared to other African nation. So what's the FG own on the matter na. This whole rubbish has made me remembered an excerp from the shameless minister for information when he complained bitterly "that the problem they are battling now is the negative influence of social media on the image of the president". What a weak and shameful way of fighting critics and opposition

Data Rate Increase: A Deliberate Mechanism To Reduce Social Media Influence in the Southern Nigeria

Hausas and Fulanis largey rely on Radio networks, BBC Hausa to be specific. An average northerner has no business with Internet and data. The current draconic government understands this fact and the effect of social media in the Southern part of the country - where Internet usage is prevalent.

The idea is to get more people in this region impoverished and caged in the coven of propaganda.

If more people are relegated to the traditional media in the South, they will, in addition to the zombies up north, give Bubu another chance come 2019 - Courtesy of BBC Hausa and Radio Nigeria.

This barbaric policy attracts the full support from the FG because people of the NORTHERN Nigeria are the least affected. They're right there digging every hole in search of oil, I jus pity una southern people who continually give their support to these animals in devil's clothings.

Be rest assured that Nigerian governors are part of this wickedness. I can tell you with all authority that governors who have in the past ordered the arrest of innocent bloggers are at the forefront of this heartlessness.
Majority of them are well known educated illiterates, illogical and senseless. Illiterates on agbada forming leaders and political warlords. They wear agbada like f00ls as if their lives depend on it, yet they can't generate common N1000 without suffocating private business men.. What a congregation of old dirty animals.

Will it ever be well with the Presidency? NO

Do our wicked governors deserve tragic deaths? Of course they do, especially after receiving billions of Naira, without the public knowledge. All thanks to Sin-ator Dino Melaye for exposing the 36 governatorial cultists.

Do they deserve forgiveness? No

This is the reason they want us to believe : NCC says the directive is “in order to provide a level playing field for all operators in the industry [allowing] small operators and new entrants to acquire market share and operate profitably. Small operators and new entrants are hereby exempted for the price floor for data services.”

To clear up any confusion that customers might have concerning this issue, NCC says, “For the avoidance of doubt a small operator is one that has less than 7.5 percent market share and a new entrant is an operator that has operated less than three years in the market.”

What is the NCC driving at? Well, for one, we know that it is trying to protect small operators like Smile, Spectranet and Ntel. Their major USP for entering into the market was 4G LTE data services and now that the big telcos have also joined 4G gang, things are not looking good for them. Also, the NCC issued a much-overlooked caveat when they withdrew the price floor last year. The Commission had stated that it could restore the price floor anytime it observed distortion in the market http://techcabal.com/2016/11/29/nigerians-data-price-hike-this-december/

Call For Protest!!!

We want to alert NIGERIANS of the plot by the federal government led by President BUHARI to take away internet and cut off people from SOCIAL MEDIA, the only avenue connecting the people with one another to discuss the issues as it affect them.

Recall that FG tried to ban Social Media through the National Assembly but it failed.

Now, the federal Government has instructed all the TELCOS, MTN, AIRTEL, GLO, ETISALAT, e.t.c to INCREASE the cost of data by 100%. You may have received the SMS notification from them.

What it means is that the N1,500 data will now be N3,000.

Buhari has purposely created this Recession and economic hardship to make life hard for the people as a means of getting more "ABSOLUTE POWERS"

We call on all Nigerians to come out en-mass to Social Media from today and vent their angers using the hashtag #NoToTariffIncrement if you really HATE what is going on.

Don't let BUHARI use this ploy to cut off our fellow Nigerians who may be unable to afford this high Tariff from the internet.

We Won't ALLOW him to take away the Only TOOL we are using to criticize his bad GOVERNMENT, don't be COWED by a TYRANT!!!

NIGERIANS ARISE!!! SPEAK NOW

Share with others.

Why are you trying so had to derail this thought provoking article I said the same thing op just reiterated earlier today, this move is a wicked attempt by the powers that be, to emasculate, disenfranchise and deny the masses access to the social media in order to stem the tide of vitriolic attacks by the increasingly frustrated and dehumanized Nigerians. This sadists have already intimidated the print and electronic media into submission, now they are moving over to the social media to complete the rout. No offense intended, but your submission lacks intelligence or common sense... Actually, it's worse than that.

It was a myopic opinion riddled with deceit and guile. Overall, it's an unsophisticated way of interpreting sensitive issues as these.

People of Northern Nigeria are the least affected, you said?

Damn. Where do I even begin with you. You have a knack for spewing gibberish on this forum.

Keep concocting lies just to feed your hate-filled soul all you want, but the people up north are as much affected as those down south. I would have elaborated on this, but it's no use speaking sense to you.

I am convinced that the data rate increase ordered by Buhari through NCC is deliberately meant to reduce access to internet for ordinary Nigerians so that the influence of social media on Buhari and his co-travellers will be limited.

By my own estimation, at least 50% of internet users will not be able to subscribe regularly as before and at least 20% may stop subscribing entirely for social media purposes.

If these people are cut of from the internet, they will be starved of authentic info and will not be able to post info as fast as before. They will depend on adulterated information coming from the compromised media houses.

Remember that Lai Mohammed had in different occasions in the past complained about the influence of the social media on the image of Buhari's government. Why are they after the same platform they rode to Aso Rock?

They have introduced the data tax through the back door and we are just watching them....Nigerians sorry ooo

Sorry Nigerians. We warned you but you would not listen.
Sorry to quote your entire post but it has been my exact same thought ever since I got the news of the planned increment.

Buhari has never liked the media or any uncontrolled stream of information. I never voted for Buhari, not more for his antecedent than for his age and pigheadedness even in the face of unpopular decision.

How Nigerians got to vote for a 73 (football age) man with no economic track record is still a puzzle.
