From my own point of view, Geography is better because of the numerous career options it opens one to. The versatility of Geography can not be overemphasized. As a graduate of Geography you could choose a career path in;
Transport Geography
Oceanography
GIS
Remote Sensing
Cartography
URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING
Biogeography
Pedology
Environmental Resource ManGement
Meteorology
Geomorphology
Climatology
Limnology
Hydrology
Surveying
Landscaping
There are the very few I can remember for now. Just know u can never go wrong with Geography. And I must say I've learnt a thing or two from this thread.

Geography as a subject is more complex nd interesting past d level of "teaching Geography in School" Geography is d study of earth nd tins in it above it , underneath .....
I studied Geography and planning sciences University of Ado Ekiti ( Geography , rural urban regional planning all together)...... my point is if u r stucked btw choosing why not combine it ? check Round for schools offering d combined course ...........
proudly Spatial Planner

I studied Geography and Regional Planning, and from what i know, Geography has more careers one can actually specialise on which is spread across d branches in geography which Urban and regional Planning is one of. Others include : Climatology, Hydrology, GIS, Remote sensing, Biogeography, Agricultural Geography, Surveying, settlement, population, military Geography, Economic Geography, Geomorphology, Town planning, environmental resource management, Cartography, Medical Geography, Political Geography, Statistical Geography, Regional Geography, Transportation Geography, Industrial Geography, Meteorology etc. Pls Note, URP is a gud course no doubt about it but i will advice u go for Geography. that is my take.

They are good courses,However. Bsc Geography without an Msc specialization might lead you no where. But with ur connect all things are possible.
URP is a professional course that is tideous and demanding, however its prospects seems to be limited in this country,Nevertheless with ur connect all things are also possible.

It all depends on the Opportunity that comes your way and how well you can grab them.

By the way I studied URP and I'm still job searching.

To me, this is Best input so far
Guyman02:

Forget about climate change which people like Donald Trump have called a scam, for instance Europe and America still runs coal fired power plants but will come to Africa and tell us to do wind turbine and solar because of climate change which is a just a way for them to sell expensive equipment to us which cannot be used for full industrialization and geographers promote that mantra verbatim.

But Town Planners look at what works in Europe and America holistically and then juxtapose it with our local environment by doing a localized Environmental Impact Assessment and advise based on that locality findings, planners dont genaralize issues and make blanket recommendations, while a Geographer will simply say according to international journals there is climate change in the world so we have to avoid burning coal.
Planning is quite stressful for students as it combines other fields such as building, quantity surveying, land surveying, civil engineering, architecture in the first and second years compared to Geography.

both course are good...both the one with higher chance in Nigeria is Urp...I did not choose urp because am an undergraduate of Urp...bt I will take time to analyse where urban planner can work
transport sector :because we take courses on transportation
land:we design, order the use of land for effective, economy and beauty purpose

I heard someone called architecture, don't ever call this where environmentalist is.because most of their work are been done by others in d built industry, I design, draw building plan
3.landscape planner
4.community development worker
5 we write environment impact assessment
6.waste mqnagement
7 population study worker
few to be. mention

I see all company make use of planner and not geographer ,all company has physical planning development unit,we went to iita ibadan and was shocked that they employ planners.
we help oil company manage their environment

Urp is not a end to itself rather it a means to other disciplines.

I will advise urp
all those you listed above we also do... am a geographer so I know.. you think you can study urp without geography.. I did my IT with town planner and they confirmed it themselves.. it's impossible to be a town planner without the knowledge of Geography.. gracias

I studied geography and meteorology and the simple truth is that a geography degree at B.Sc level isn't too recognized in the labour market. so if he chooses to study geography he must also be ready to do his M.SC upon graduation and specialized in one of the recognized branches of geography.

I studied Urban and regional planning at bachelors I have a msc in that same field and also I'm a registered TPL. Out there in the real world, TPLs jobs are taken by other professionals and little is left for TPLs to do.

Right now I'm running an MSC in environmental management a paradigm shift from URP.

The only thing making me laugh is one ignoramus who said that most universities around the world are scrapping Geography from their curriculum. I laugh again.

*Oxford* still offers Geography, (as Geography & the Environment)
Other top schools in the UK still offers *Geography*, University of *Cambridge*, University of Leeds, University of Edinburgh, University College London, and a host of others.
In the USA, although Harvard, Stanford, MIT do not offer it, some top schools do, Dartmouth College, California state University... The list is endless.

No course supersedes the other, it's just that in a well structured system. All of these disciplines have something to offer.

And Environmental Mgt is a specialisation for Geographers. In fact in some universities (vis, Unilorin), it's BSc (Geography and Environmental Management).

Your choice of the one to choose between the two depends on your future carrier ambition. for the guy giving his reason on why you should choose URP to be because secondary schools are retrenching geography teacher is way out of the line. going by that his argument, people should stop studying chemical engineering, banking and finance, accounting because oil, banking sectors have been retrenching workers since last year. If you have any ambition of joining force, going into GIS, cartography, Meteorology, Environmental resource management, I strongly advice you to go for Geography. but if your ambition is to become a secondary school teacher, then go for URP as the earlier poster suggested because they are not retrenching them unlike the geography teachers. I studied Geography/Meteorology in Federal university of technology, minna. presently I'm running a master programme in environmental resource management in the same school. rounding off the programme almost. Google environmental resource management and URP and choose for yourself. as I said earlier, your choice should be determined by your future career ambition. No course is superior to the other as no course can take the place of the other.

How has it been sir?, after 2years
Should one venture in Geography and Meteorology?
Your response will be highly appreciated.

What happened to the Meteorological aspect? Or The course is basically on Geography?
