- He said he was embarrassed by reactions of
some Nigerians over his decision on the US
Professor Wole Soyinka has promised to hold
a private funeral when Donald Trump is
inaugurated as the president of the United
States.
The Nobel Laureate spoke on Monday,
December 5 where he said the funeral was
not to mourn with the citizens of the US over
their choice of president but the death of
Nigerians’ common sense, The Punch reports.He said: “Our common sense is totally lost. I
am embarrassed sometimes that I occupy the
same nation space with some people.”“I am embarrassed to occupy the same nation
space as some imbeciles and morons. I am
planning my Wolexit, which could be internal
or external.
“On the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration, I
will have a private funeral keep to mourn the
death of Nigeria’s common sense. If the board
agrees (because I do not like to be
authoritarian) I will move the residency of my
foundation out of the country."
He also lashed out at Nigerians for querying
his decision to tear his Green Card following
the victory of Trump at the polls.
A few days ago, Soyinka confirmed the
destruction of his US residency green card.
The award-winning author said on Thursday,
December 1 that he has fulfilled his earlier
pledge to destroy his residency permit and
abandon the United States if Donald Trump
won the presidential election.
“I have already done it, I have disengaged
(from the United States). I have done what I
said I would do.
“I had a horror of what is to come with
Trump… I threw away the (green) card, and I
have relocated, and I’m back to where I have
always been, ” BBC quoted Soyinka as saying
at an education conference at the University
of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Soyinka caused a stir when he vowed to
destroy his Green Card if Trump emerged as
president and carried out the threat although
this brought different reactions from some
Nigerians.
