An unidentified police sergeant has been accused of allegedly shooting a hawker, Chimaobi Ihemadu, while attempting to evade paying N600 for plantain chips he collected from the hawker.
A relation of the hawker, Chiendelu, who petitioned the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said on October 20 the hawker was selling chips at Gwako, along Gwagwalada road in Abuja when a  Honda car  with registration number AH 403 ABC and a Gwagwalada Area Council bus carrying some policemen stopped and he approached them to buy plantain chips.

The relation stated that the policemen initially declined but later beckoned on Ihemadu (the hawker) to come and collect N600 worth of plantain chips but when the hawker asked for his money, one of the police officers alighted from the bus and started shooting sporadically into the air.

“One of the policemen came down from the vehicle and asked Ihemadu why he was disturbing them, before shooting him in the neck,” the relation alleged.

He said after the shooting, the policeman returned their vehicle and they drove away.

The relation said the hawker was rushed to the Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital, where he was visited by some police officers sent by the Divisional Police Officer of Gwagwalada Police Station, Charles Mozie and the Secretary of Gwagwalada Area Council, who bought a neck collar and deposited N25,000 for blood transfusion.

He revealed that on October 23, the relation of the policeman that shot the hawker came through the DPO and gave the hawker’s family N40,000 which was rejected.

“The DPO asked us to collect the money as the other party came in peace and are ready to foot the hospital bill,” he stated.

He said the suspected policeman’s family later came back with N10,000 and asked us to add it to the N40,000, adding that it was all they could pay.

“When the hawker’s family demanded to know from the DPO what the police was doing about the case, he informed us that he is the middle man between us and the family of the policeman that shot the hawker,” the relation said.

When City News contacted DPO Mozie, he confirmed the case but said the incident only occurred in Gwagwalada, adding that those linked with the incident were not police officers under his command.

He said the sergeant that shot the boy has since been handed over to the FCT Police Command and is in detention.

Meanwhile our reporter learnt from another relation of the hawker, Chimela Friday, that he is still in the hospital.

The National Human Rights Commission and Abuja Chapter of Nigerian Bar Association have said they would investigate and institute a legal case against the suspected police officer.

I think NPF should find solution to the problem to the hawkers family and I want the police officer (SERGENT) to be sentenced to jail sentenced to death also

And they say police is your friend. where is madam rebrander, is this part of rebranding. thats what happens in a country like nigeria where they just hand out guns to policemen anyhow giving them licence to intimidate people and misbehave.

Nigeria needs to retrain its policemen and also collect guns from them and give them taser guns and only allow specially trained and mentally balanced ones to carry guns.

This country tire person, we don't know the people we are avoiding whether kidnapers abi na police.

All boils down to insecurity, when police that suppose to safeguard the lives of the citizens will turn around to be life eliminators.

some disturbing story,,, however i must say that the story was poorly drafted leaving me to imagina a lot of things!

It  is a pity.though one should not be surprise because most people recruited into the police force were not  check medically if they are fit psychiatrically to join the force.they recruit people that have be traumatise by poverty and frustration into the police force and give them gun without proper psychiatric test to determine whether they are people of stable mind.  the result is what see everyday,in other clime ,the police are very discipline and friendly.

This National Prosecutors Force have started making this an official duty as even the DPO is sopprting shit like this.

i know plantain chips is nice, but na so e nice reach? to kill a poor hawker for it.

Majority of the Nigerian Police are not educated  

The Federal Government should find solution to the NPF immediately, recruit the educated ones as soon as possible and also pump funds into the sector.

Police are meant to be friendly but the Nigerian Police is just a different case!! I hate them with passion

But this brings to mind the way these newly recruited police men, corprals and even those without any ranks carry guns these days, I use to think that the practice before now is for only high ranking officers from inspectors or sergeant can carry guns. The way most of these guys handle the guns and some under the influence of alchohol or drugs, God save us

What a horrible situation to be in. I bet if Mr. Plantain seller had a godfather, he would have seen prompt justice. As he is a nobody, nothing will happen to the guilty policeman. Maybe a little reprimand from the police bosses to the guilty policeman. I will bet you good money the reprimand will be perhaps that next time guilty policeman shoots, he should shoot to kill the plantain seller and call him an "armed robber". That way no questions would be asked. Nigeria - What a great country!

these pple call police are all animals in human skin, can u imagine because of plantain chips you shoot an innocent boy who the idiots that gave you gun refused to provide social amenity for. probably the boy is not in any school, after jumping up and down from morning till nite for his daily bread he will go to the house where there is no electricity, no clean/tap water to drink and probably may be he wil have to pass through so many 'erofo' b4 getting to his house. and now one idiot went and shoot him, even if hes alive can he ever be the same again? honestly am tired of this jungle.
