Crisis Looms In Senate Over Magu’s Rejection by zakim(m): 3:33am On Dec 21, 2016
A new wave of crisis is brewing at the Senate over the rejection of the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.

The crisis, our correspondent report has torn the leadership of the Senate apart with factions taking varied position on the matter.

The Senate had last Thursday rejected Magu following a report by the Department of State Services (DSS) signed by one Folashade Bello for the Director-General, Lawal Daura.

The Senate Leader, Ali Ndume had after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Villa on Monday, punctured the Senate’s position, saying Magu was not rejected.

The position of Ndume forced the spokesperson of the Senate, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (APC, Niger) to address newsmen yesterday where he emphasised the rejection of Magu.

Sabi said “Following the security report on EFCC chairman, the Senate decided not to confirm the chairman and communicate same to Mr. President, while those of the others was reported or forwarded. The Senate also decided to refer the other nominees to the anti-corruption committee for screening since there was no adverse security report on them.

“The position of the Senate as stated by me remains the position of the Senate and I have nothing more to add. So please we want the media to be guided in all of this.”

But reacting in a phone interview, Ndume said his position was clear and insisted that Magu has not been rejected.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari and Senate President Bukola Saraki yesterday met behind closed-doors at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The meeting, which was held inside the president’s office, lasted about one hour. Though the Senate president did not speak to State House correspondents after the meeting, our correspondent gathered that Buhari and Saraki discussed the refusal by the Senate to confirm the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as chairman of EFCC.

All these strain oppositions and incoherent voices from the senate is the consequences of Buhari's non interference in the election of the principal officers of the upper chamber.

Saraki is an unstable water, hence unreliable in managing sensitive affairs of his party in the chamber because of his inordinate ambition & unholy fraternity with the PDP.
He is neither here nor there with ulterior motives to rubbish the anti graft campaign simply because of his travail in the CCT.

Saraki also seems to be an inexperienced spoon fed president of the senate as he lacks the capacity to interface properly unlike his predecessor David Mark.

Confusion everywhere. This further goes to show that almost all Nigerians have corrupt tendencies irrespective of the positions they occupy. Who would have expected that Magu who initially appeared saintly will be able to afford 20million naira per year accommodation. The allegations against him were not denied rather he gave explanation to them and that my 3 year old nephew does when caught in the middle of a bad act. Having said that, it's good to state that his rejection by the Senate has been politicised. Some people are afraid of his nomination and seemingly uncompromising stance this which he accentuated with his initial gragra. Who would have thought that Buhari will one day be famzing Saraki.
When Tinubu and Co wanted to influence the Senate for Buhari preferred candidate, Lasun, he was busy forming a true democrat, that he won't want to interfere. Now the Senates are dealing with him big time with the budget, loan and this. Anyway, the inability of the presidency to control the Senate has against OBJ tenure is good for our democracy.
Sai thieving Saraki grin

Buharis should carry his cross.
He systematically betrayed Tinubu during the Senate President tussle even after Tinubu has prevailed on his own preferred candidate to step down.
By the time Saraki is through with Buhari, he go don dey Daura.

Don't mind him. He thought he was 'doing' Tinubu then but now him eye don dey clear. Those that gave him that advice then thought they are trying to curb Tinubu's influence unknown to them that elders see what the young won't see despite an intense look.

But it's the same DSS that broke down doors and went after corrupt judges that's the cause of all these and not the senate. We always like to find a scapegoat in the national assembly every time something wrong happens without checking the facts.

Exactly. Buhari deliberately deceived Tinubu into fighting his battles, picking sides, and creating enemies for himself at the National Assembly all because he wanted to be seen as being on Buhari's side, while he (Buhari) stayed quietly in the background without saying anything so that the same Tinubu ended up looking like the bad guy and taking the fall for his failure of leadership.

Had Buhari come out to take a clear position concerning the Senate leadership crisis, other APC Senators would have fallen in line and Saraki would have been history, but he deliberately wanted Tinubu to take the fall for his inaction and indecisiveness. Now he's romancing the same 'kwarrupt' Saraki. Buhari has showed that he's not a reliable politician and those fighting for him are just wasting their time because they will end up being used and dumped when the chips are down.
