Bonny Island is situated at the southern edge of Rivers State in the Niger Delta of Nigeria near Port Harcourt. Ferries are the main form of transport to and from the island. The local language spoken in Bonny Island and Bonny Town is Ibani, though most natives also speak the Igbo language.

History
Located at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean facing the Bight of Bonny sits the island of Bonny. This serene community has several historical and economic symbolism for the Nigerian federation. It was the melting point of economic activities right from the 16th century. It served as Christianity’s first port of call in West Africa. It was also home to many illustrious sons and daughters of Nigeria. With a thriving traditional system and robust cultural heritage it stands out as one of the foremost local communities in Nigeria. Her traditional institution is headed by Edward William-Dappa Pepple who serves as natural ruler and Amanyanabo-in-Council and ably assisted by a Council of Chiefs headed by Reginald Abbey-Hart who is also chief and head of Captain Hart major house. Her political leadership currently rests on the shoulders of Nelson Ben Irimagha who bears the traditional title of Amasenibo.
The community is subdivided into two main segments – the mainland and the hinterland. The mainland comprises the Township, Sandfield, Iwoama, Orosikiri, Aganya, Ayambo, Akiama, Workers Camp, Finima and some outlying fishing settlements lying along the Bonny River’s coastline. The hinterland includes the villages that serve as home to natives of Bonny kingdom.

Economy
In the early 1990s the Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with 3 international partners, Shell Gas BV., CLEAG Limited [ELF] and AGIP International BV. started the multibillion-dollar project Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (Nigeria LNG).[1] Due to its strategic position, the island hosts various oil companies including Royal Dutch Shell, Mobil, Chevron, Agip, and Elf.

Education
Public and private secondary schools on the island includes:
• Bonny National Grammar School
• Spring Foundation Group of Schools
• St.Paul's Comprehensive College
• Government Girls Secondary School
• Community Secondary School
• Lucille Education Center
• Kingdom Heritage.

Tourist attractions
Bonny Island-Finima is surrounded on the west and south by long stretches of beaches. The beautiful beaches attract tourists and fun seeking inhabitants alike on sunny days and festive periods like Christmas and Easter. On 26 and 31 December of every year, thousands of people visit the Finima beaches for beach carnivals

Don't be surprised. The king lives in UK and oversees his kingdom from UK. He makes it to Bonny like a few times in a year. Bonny people will tell you how rich he is and his people are suffering. His people are demeaned by the companies in Bonny. Who will speak for them? So I'm not shocked his post has British flag on it instead of Nigeria and Bonny flags.

The Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has felicitated with the Amanyanabo of Grand Bonny Kingdom, King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple, Perekule the VI on his 20th Anniversary celebration on the throne.
In a statement issued at Government House, Port Harcourt, Banigo described King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple as a man of peace and candour whose reign in the past 20 years has brought peaceful co-existence and development to Grand Bonny Kingdom.
The deputy governor said the exemplary leadership style of the monarch calls for the continuous support of the traditional rulers, chiefs and entire people of Bonny Kingdom in order to sustain the prevailing peaceful atmosphere and further accelerate the pace of development in the area.
As custodian of the people’s culture, Banigo urged King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple to always imbibe the fear of God in his rule and avoid cultural inhibitions that undermines the collective interest of the people, especially women and the girl child.
Banigo prayed God to give the monarch good health, strength and wisdom in his reign over the people of Grand Bonny Kingdom, and wished him happy anniversary celebration and many more fruitful years on the throne.

THE SPEECH MADE AT THE l0th coronation anniversary celebrations

A short speech by the chairman of Bonny Historical Society, Amaopusenibo Spurgeon Adawari Green on the occasion of the l0th coronation anniversary celebrations of his majesty King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple II con JP Perekule XI natural ruler and Amanyanabo of Grand Bonny Kingdom

His Majesty, King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple III, JP, CON, Perekule XI, Natural Ruler and Amanyanabo of Grand Bonny.

Highly Respected Chiefs of Grand Bonny, Titled Citizens of Bonny.

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen.

As a short Preface, I am inclined to say, with a gladsome, mind that going by what the general feel is these past few days, there seems to be a “magical pull“ drawing everyone (great and small), towards this great Island Kingdom of Grand Bonny. This, understandably, is as it should be, having regard to all that is billed to take place during this highly festive period of the Kings 10th Coronation Anniversary Celebrations.
Bonny is a clean, healthy place with a people reputedly very friendly and accommodating. We welcome our fine guests coming as they have generously done from all over the country.
We assure them they really are in for a most pleasant regal treat and reception.

The Anniversary: One important aspect of our “Monarchical” way of life is that, apart from the “Proclamation” and eventual “crowning” (coronation) of the King, the observance of the King’s Anniversary (celebrated yearly or at set periods), remains the greatest single traditional “Ritual” that must be performed throughout the life span of the reigning Monarch. This, precisely, is what we are here happily doing today.

The Monarchy: An age-long institution which remains the very bedrock, around which the history of Bonny immutably gyrates. It became, centuries ago, our way of life: it still is our way of life; and we are happy with it. The Chieftaincy institution itself is inseparably “hinged” on the Monarchy from which it derives its traditional strength and ‘ authority. Until a newly appointed Chief (Warialabo) is recognized by the King such appointment has no basis and the individual concerned no matter his social standing in the community), is neither accepted nor recognized as a Chief by anybody anywhere within the Kingdom.
The King, naturally, wields considerable influence (a very real and beneficial influence), over his people and his authority now, as in the days of yore, is never in doubt.
Today, on the ancient stool of the PEREKULE DYNASTY, sits an intelligent and highly admirable personage, whose inherent ability as an outstanding Natural Ruler has, undoubtedly, gone beyond the Shores of Bonny. Naturally we, his people as well as other well meaning friends of Bonny feel proud of, and happy for him, Long may he reign!

The Bonny Historical Society: As a Society, we are comparatively young, having come into being just 18 months ago. Still, despite our short debut on the social plane, some real measure of achievement at least, on a modest scale, could rightly be scored in our favor.
A day like this offers much on which to comment. However, in view of the magnitude of the events as have carefully been compressed into one gigantic Programme of Events, one is compelled to be brief. I shall, therefore, end this paragraph by quoting a brief remark the writer made in a speech delivered on the occasion of the National Banquet of Bonny Kingdom held on Friday 30th December, 2005. It reads:
Our Aims and Objectives are as enshrined in our Constitution, copies of which are already in the records of the Chiefs Council. However, it would perhaps, be of interest to state here that foremost in our agenda is the publication of an authentic book on the history of Grand Bonny.
There have been various publications about the history of Bonny. Some are fairly “passable”, but quite a lot requires complete rewriting and detailed review both in terms of accuracy and in historical facts.
While the “Chronicle of Grand Bonny” co-authored by Professor EJ. Alagoa and Warisenibo Adonye Fombo remains the most comprehensive, authentic and largely acceptable book so far published on the history of Bonny, there is, without doubt, a definite and urgent need to publish another work to improve and up-date certain aspects of the book.

“Bonny Cultural Carnival” / Exxon Mobil: About a year ago, precisely on 28th October 2005, the Bonny Historical \’ Society forwarded a project proposal to Exxon Mobil for sponsorship to 5 ‘ organize a Cultural Revival Week as an annual event in Bonny Kingdom. The idea behind this Proposal covers the following:

(a) To foster good Community relations between Exxon Mobil and the Bonny Kingdom their host Community.
(b) To encourage the preservation and sustenance of Bonny culture to posterity.
(c) To stimulate the spirit of healthy competition amongst the youth for sustainable growth and development.
(d) To inculcate discipline through the encouragement of cultural activities amongst the youth with a view to stemming youth restiveness in the Kingdom.

Events, as they happily turned out, were in our favor: Exxon Mobil not only accepted to finance the whole project but also expressed willingness to be part of the Cultural Activities. Their approval came last year but as time was against us the proposal was shifted to this year, 2006.
By what could pass for a “Divine coincidence, His Majesty’s Anniversary, (understandably a much more important and bigger event), also become due and got billed for the year 2006i It was, therefore, with great enthusiasm that we accepted the Invitation from the Bonny Council of Chiefs to take part in the Coronation Anniversary Celebration: with the privilege to feature a reasonable part of our own Cultural Revival Activities as a “PRELUDE” to the Master Programme of the Anniversary.

Conclusions: Bonny Historical Society heartily congratulates His Majesty on his l0th Coronation Anniversary Celebrations. We also wish to use this medium to thank him for his highly valued support and encouragement since the Society came into being.
Our thanks and appreciation must especially go to Exxon Mobil for their moral and financial support, which has immensely contributed to the great and wonderful success we have achieved We look forward to their continued support in the years ahead.
May we also thank the highly renowned Professors and other eminent Scholars who have kindly presented highly educative and scholarly papers to give this Anniversary the dignity and intellectual honor it deserves.
Finally our thanks must also go to the Chairman of Bonny Chiefs Council. Chief Reginald Plane
Peter Captain-Hort and the entire Bonny Council of Chief: for their great and concerted efforts in making this Anniversary about the best we ever have had in the history of this great Kingdom.

Sincerely, quoting Wikipedia just worsened it sir. Please look at that picture very well, get authentic sourced photos of 1896 and you will see the difference. The architecture background and the dressing look much recent old but not as old as 1896.These fashion of revising history through Wikipedia only makes mockery of our collective history, whoever posted that picture as an 1896 picture is the one at fault not you. Below is an archival artistic impression of Bonny as at that period.

We know the history, sir. The flag is a sign of political authority. No one flies or uses the flag of a country it is not subject to. So why is the British flag still there 56 years after Nigeria became independent from Great Britain? Are the British still ruling you there in Bonny?
