“All of you are cowards and you will get the rewards that cowards get” The DOR said “He quickly brought out a newspaper and showed us the front page. I couldn’t see it well because of my position, but I knew it read something like “Soldiers on the run from Bokoharam on slaughter”. Every one of us were visibly shocked as to how they got the news of the takeover of our military base by the terrorists. It wasn’t still enough, he went and arranged for a television and with their connection, they played us a video.

The video of the terrorists killing some Soldiers, and everyone of us came closer to have a clearer look. It was so horrible the way the soldiers were tied up like goats and kept on the floor. When it was time for a soldier to be killed, he gets bundled up and made to recite some things from a paper. They brought the first soldier and kicked him between his legs and I could visibly see tears dripping right from his eyes. He was placed probably between in front of a camera and made asked to recite something. I guess he was trying to hard not to recite it, before one of the guys gave him a hot slap. I saw blood come out immediately out of his mouth as he cried in pains. They clearly showed one of the terrorists go towards a hot stove and brought out the knife placed on it, it was clearly blazing with red flames around it. He was asked for the last time to recite it and the soldier clearly refused.

They immediately placed the hot piece of metal close to his neck region as he cried severely from great pains. We were still sitting down and watching before I realized that tears had taken over my eyes. I looked at other soldiers and most of them were compelled to watch the video as no one was allowed to look away. Everywhere was as quiet as a grave yard and I believed that everyone was getting a dose of the action movie we were watching.

They gave him another chance to recite what was in the paper, but he remained resolute not to. They kicked and slapped him till he was lying helplessly on the ground. After much futile attempt, they summoned the guy with a cutlass and he came forward and recited some portions of the book they asked our soldier to recite. The camera moved to another direction and I saw some other soldiers tied up and was waiting for their own taste of death.

“Tunji” I shouted immediately out of rush, fear and regret. Everyone quickly looked my direction and I bowed my head in great tears. One of the soldiers kicked my back and reminded me to look up and watch the movie.

The guy with the cutlass after reciting some portions of the books kept shouting “Allahu Alkabar” and went straight to grab the head of the soldier. I presumed the cutlass was quite hot because I noticed the red light coming from it. The soldier’s head was bent on a log of wood, and the sharp and blazing part of the knife was placed on his neck. Even the hotness alone was terrifying as he kept rattling his legs but couldn’t move his hands because they were tied up. It wasn’t long before the terrorist started slicing his neck as the soldier kept gasping for breath.

It was like they were beheading a chicken or a fowl in the most painful manner. Most of the other terrorists continued to shout “Allahu Alkbar” before his neck was finally severed from his body and they placed it high like they won a trophy of some sort. They pointed to the next person but we couldn’t see who they pointed at, as we kept anticipating. I was already sweating and tears all over my eyes. If they allowed us to watch such a thing, what would become our own faith?

The next soldier was brought forward and behold it was Tunji. The video was paused as the officer went straight for his announcement.

“These soldiers were captured while they kept defending the base, but you cowards ran away like chicken from a hawk. You were enlisted to defend one another, and not run away from you duties.” He kept explaining in a rather harsh tone filled with anger “I am showing you what your colleagues went through because they died defending their father’s land and not you cowards”

The movie resumed and Tunji was asked to recite the same paper. I was praying that he recited it, if that would give him freedom. Unfortunately, he declined also to read the paper.

I remembered the money I paid into his account and how he promised to always remember me immediately the war against terrorism was over. I remembered how he bragged about his fiancé being more beautiful than mine. I remembered… oh I remembered how he promised to attend my wedding ceremony when it was time.

“Tunji why” I cried deeply. My eyes were already soaked and the I guess they were already reddish in color. I noticed as they placed the hot knife on various parts of his body. Tunji cried… he shouted and he yelled. Help wasn’t going to come his way, and death was the only antidote to his present predicament. He was given another chance to recite what was in the paper and he still declined amidst tears. He shook his head in pains and kept crying.

The room where we were watching the video was still as silent as ever. Most soldiers watched in anticipation and I saw as Bright bent his head and was being forced by another soldier to keep watching.

To my uttermost surprise, Tunji agreed to read what was written on the paper. His mouth was untied and the paper brought closer to him. He kept crying and the after some minutes, Tunji shouted “Mummy I love you and all others.” He was immediately cut with the cutlass at his back and he fell flat on the ground. I wished his mum wouldn’t watch this video.

“How will his sick mum react to the death of his son?”

“How will the fiancé respond?”

“What about other dependents on him?” These questions flooded my mind. I would have loved to be the one to console them, but I still don’t even know my fate. All of a sudden Tunji stopped crying and became as bold as ever. I wondered what happened and why the sudden change. I remembered he once told me that whenever he dies, he was going to meet a man up there in the sky. I remembered this because he kept looking upwards and I believed he was communicating with the man in the sky.

“Hope he helps you” I whispered to myself.

Few minutes later, they grabbed his head in the same position they kept the first soldier and a cutlass was placed on his neck. He was a still as a calm river and finally… his neck was raised up there again like a trophy being presented to winners.

“RIP” I whispered within as tears kept rolling down my eyes. I don’t know if I will see Tunji again, but I believe that one day we shall all die and our spirits will roam forever on earth.

“I will see Tunji again” I consoled myself as a kick on the back brought me back to our present state.

[b]The director seemingly angry clearly stood up and yelled with his loudest tone “you left your colleagues to die like little chickens, and you think we will congratulate you just like that and welcome you homes with open hands? It wouldn’t works and it will never work.” He was still fuming with anger when another senior General bounced in with some of his ADC and other junior soldiers.

“For those of you who don’t know, what you all have done is punishable by death but we will make sure that you get the deserved judgment when hearing starts” He said with a calm but firm voice. I took my time to use my hand and wipe out the tears that kept rolling down my face and I wondered what I got myself into.

“Take all of them to where they belong” He ordered as he was greeted with a large number of salutes from the free soldiers and was escorted out of the hall. We were chained one to another and we made way to an unknown destination. I wondered how where we were heading to would like, and I concluded that it would most likely be like a cell in a prison yard. We kept walking in chains and nobody asked if we even ate all the while we were in the forest. I saw one of the soldiers in chains like us, asking our warder if there was anything like food

“By the time we go finish with you, you go dey beg to die before we even kill you finish” He said before landing on the soldier that asked the question a resounding slap. He cried! He really cried! Not just within himself, he cried out but not loud. Have you seen a man cried before? Or are you thinking about what could make a man cry? Here is a perfect scenario.

We finally approached an old building that looked like it was built before the Nigerian civil war. It was like a dumping ground in the base, but the building had facilities. I could even perceive the odor of debris around as we came closer. The smell became stronger as we approached the entrance of the building. I saw the keepers of the place, putting on nose masks, while we the prisoners were inhaling everything the environment had to offer.

We were walking like slaves with handcuffs on our hands and legs as we made way inside the building. I then discovered that the ancient building had about two rooms in it that could contain about just 10 people and we were about 25 or more than in numbers. The rooms were so small when I measured them from outside but I was wondering how it was going to be possible. Just then, the Military Police officer escorting us started dividing the room between us. He did it randomly that the security guards in the building had no option than to obey the last order.

Luckily I and Bright and about 5 other soldiers found ourselves inside a small room that would be too tight for two grown-up men to inhabit. They started unlocking our chains as we made way inside a room that would harbor us for as long as nobody knows. It was a battle of collecting the best space and with the hope of seating close to the window. I was so disappointed to enter the room and found out that nothing like a window existed there. It was just like a small space with no means of ventilation, except the door.

“Dey go leave that door open?” One of the soldiers asked me. I gave him a look that showed that he just asked the most foolish question on earth. I quickly found a spot and managed, while Bright sat very close to me.

Bright was this kind of over-pampered kid that one would think he actually came from a rich family. He is tall and has a lot of body weight, making him look like a lazy semi-giant. I personally recognized him as someone who didn’t know what to say at some given moments, and this moment was not exempted as Bright told me “so this is where God wanted us to end up”

“Are you stupid?’ I responded in a harsh but weak tone.

“Why insulting me?” He chipped in with that question

“Because you should learn to say things the way it is, and not the way your pastor of your church asks you to”

“Is that the reason for the insult?’

“Yes and I will dish out more if you don’t learn to control your mouth” I added with a more angry tone this time around

“May God forgive you” He said. I was even even about to drop mine, before some of the guys in the room started grunting “Two of you dey make noise here ooo”(Both of you are making a whole lot of noise).

“Una know say person no fit breath, una dey add spit dey give person”(You know we have poor ventilation here, and both of you are worsening the situation by pouring spit all around.)

“Sorry abeg”(I am sorry please) I pleaded with them

“If you sit small, you stand oo… make I sit small”(IF you sit for a while, you will also give me an opportunity to sit also) That was when I realized that the room wasn’t even okay for the seven of us.

“Sorry ooo” I apologized again before I tried to create space for him. I kept adjusting, alongside other guys as we finally squeezed ourselves together and he sat down. That room was meant for about two defaulters, but conditions made us about nine inside.

It wasn’t long before he heard a loud shout form the other section of the building. The cry was loud that we wondered what would have happened. We were still ruminating over the possible cause of the incidence before one of the soldiers with us alerted us about an impending doom “I wan piss ooo and e hold me badly” (I am pressed badly and need to ease myself).

“Jesus” Bright muttered. I couldn’t help but laugh out loudly to the surprise of the other guys.

“I wish say I follow for those wey those bokoharam bullets kill inside that forest, I for just dey rest. Insha Allah”(I wish I was among those that were killed by the terrorists inside the forest, I would have been resting in heaven. By God’s grace) One of the soldiers wailed

“God wanted you to be here” Bright immediately added as soon as the guy discussed about his favorite topic

“Wow!” I exclaimed

It wasn’t long before we heard an announcement “As from tomorrow, you will be summoned to face a panel of Military enquiry. You will wake up early and do your rounds before moving out. Am I clear?” He yelled. I heard some scanty “yes sir” form like few people around. Nobody was prepared to talk much again and infact, we were all tired to loud our voices.

“I hear say na kill dem go kill us ooo… say we run from fight” (I heard they will sentence us to death because we fled from a warzone) One of the soldiers said

“You have heard the verdict na” I asked Bright who was most acting like he was either praying or trying to sleep “What else do you want?”

“I want you to believe in God” He responded with either a smile because I couldn’t see his face well as everywhere was kind of dark

“Is it the same one that allowed Tunji’s head to be separated from his body?” I asked sarcastically

Where was he when Tunji who believe also was being slaughtered like a little chicken? I asked him in anger.. Just then …

“Who did this for fvck sake” I shouted out of anger. Someone deliberately polluted the air right there in a stuffy room. We were clearly lacking oxygen and someone added more salt to our injury. The rush to put our nose in between the little space meant for air became serious.

‘Oh God’ One of the soldiers shouted. At first we were all angered but laughed over it when we realized that even the person who dropped the fart followed us in search of fresh air. We had to resort to the ancient days method of looking for who polluted the air.

A guy volunteered and we started pointing at us while reciting a specific poem “If na me mess, make I no mess again.” The pointer finally fell at me and they all laughed that I was the person that fart.

“Not possible!” I shouted as they kept on with the laughter. I had to do mine and it fell at Bright’s position. The friendly argument continued till we were disrupted by an announcement.

“You shall be visiting the Military court tomorrow, so get prepared and wake up early”

“Wetin dem wan do us for court?”(What will they do with us in court?) One of the soldiers asked

‘See the kain stupid question you dey ask! They wan do wedding for the court” Another soldier replied him harshly.

“But I no ask you na” The guy fired back

“When you ask the question, you attach anybody name to am?”

“Guy it is okay” Bright pleaded as the place went back to its normal serene nature. I couldn’t tell what time it was or whether we it was evening or Night. But I knew it was approaching evening, when the brought in a bowel of food for us inside the cell. Nobody cared to know what kind of food it was as we quickly devoured it and one of the guys was almost eating up the plastic

“This food no get taste ooo…” One of the guys lamented bitterly

‘Na after you chop you come notice say e no get taste abi?”

‘No mind the mumu”

“Him for no chop na”

“And na him still hold the plate dey lick am ooo…”

Immediately, everybody went into laughter and he flung the plate forward.

“They no carry water come give person ooo” The said guy lamented again

‘You go drink piss?” One guy offered

“Even me, piss no dey my body again. E don finish” Another soldier lamented. It was actually funny because I laughed so hard at that statement.

“So wetin go come happen tomorrow” someone asked as he channeled the topic being discussed to tomorrow’s issue.

“To be frank” Bright started “We are going to be treated like animals”

“How” I questioned

“There are people called deserters in war, and that is what we are! As simple as that”

‘So wetin them go do us now?” one guy asked

‘Killing” Bright replied immediately

‘But someone ordered us to run and it was the commander” I argued

“Nobody will hear that from you, believe me” Bright firmly said “They will execute us one by one”

“Oh Jesus” One of the guys cringed. It was really a sober moment as everywhere became so silent and I bent my head and hyperventilated. One other guy visibly carried his hands onto his heads and shook it vigorously. Everywhere around us emitted particles of sorrows till a guy broke the silence

“E better make I die than make I stay here”

“I swear” Another guy added

I thought about the statement and didn’t even know whether to support the notion or oppose it. We continued with various discussions till we all fell asleep one after the other.

“Wake up you fools” Was the goodmorning we heard that morning from the soldier that bashed inside our cell and started kicking us like animals. He kicked me right there in the stomach as I bent and held onto my left abdomen. It became swollen immediately and I couldn’t just move from that position.

“you no dey hear stand up?” He queried as he landed me yet another slap in the eye. Bright stretched his hand to help me up and received his own portion of slap that landed on his face. He immediately left me and went outside while the guy continued kicking me. I cringed and held on to protect my face as he continued kicking and punching me in various part of the body. Most of my body parts had swollen and I never felt any pain more than I was feeling now. I finally managed to get up and noticed my nose was bleeding, alongside a deep cut in my left eye. Crying would drain the little energy I had in me. Even though I brought out tears, I didn’t make it visible to him. It was in the cold hours of the morning and they brought us out to be inspected. Schedules were given coupled with instructions and areas of assignment were shared. I wondered how I would cope, with the hunger and the injury I already sustained this morning for doing nothing. I and my cell mates were apportioned a large area to dig a trench for whatever purpose it was going to serve. We never knew we were in hot soup till the measurements were given to us.

‘What?’ One of the guys almost shouted but remembered he was under severe punishment. They gave us all the necessary tools that would aid us with the task at hand.

“If we go this court wey we wan go, I go accept say I run” One of the guys said with tears in his eyes “I never chop, I never bath, I never drink water for how many days, and they say make I dig wetin pass 6ft. Just because say I say make I join Army.” The other soldiers sat there looking dejected as no one had any strength to even lift a digger talk more of using it to excavate the ground. We barely started digging when they reminded us that we need to get back to the cell and bath in preparation for the panel.

We hurriedly went back to our cells and found a bag filled with our uniforms on it. Everybody rushed to make sure that they took theirs on time.

“Why is blood inside your eyes na” Bright asked as he drew my head closer. I reminded him of what happened to me. We finally found a way to bath using water drawn from an old abandoned well. It was smelly but it was better than not bathing at all. Some other determined guys drank from the water, all in a bid to quench.

One of the guys started a song as we poured the dirty water on our body.

We shall overcome someday.2x

We shall over come…

We shall over come…

We shall overcome some day…

Oh deep in my heart… I do believe…

I shall overcome someday.

We sang with joy as tears crept out from my swollen eyes. I remembered all that has ever happened in my life, even as a kid to this point. There is something I would I would to say… but..

My Mama,

My Papa,

My younger ones,

My Darling fiancé Genea; I am very sure they don’t know my present predicament. I thought serving my father’s land was the best thing that could happen to a grown up man, but alas… it was actually the reverse.

We had barely finished singing, when some military policemen came to hurry us to enter back and get prepared to head to the tribunal.

“Cowards!” The tall and huge military man shouted as he raised his staff towards our direction and we dispersed.

“Your mates will fight to death, and you people will fight and run away” He said with his dis-jointed English grammar. We ran and took up our cloths, just the trousers and wore white T-shirts for those who couldn’t see theirs again. After preparations, we were ushered to a room where we were placed on handcuffs before we entered into the waiting black-Maria. Dark and quiet was how the inside of the Black-Maria could be described. We reached an already set tribunal as we were greeted by camera flashes from journalists who had gathered already and was taking every single possible shot. We walked inside and went straight to where was prepared for us.

It was a small trial room and about roughly 70 of us were seated right there on the chair with handcuffs on our hands as we waited for the prosecuting counsel. I remember that it was a captain at our training camp in Bama that came as the prosecuting counsel. I knew exactly what prosecution is all about, that he was there to send us to the stakes to get fired at.

We were seated and didn’t bother exchanging discussions among ourselves because you don’t know what might happen next. It wasn’t long before the jury appeared. We stood up and greeted as every other person did. Just like I was in a dream, they arranged for a screen, and the repeat of the slaughter of our soldiers was shown again.

Few days before this time, we heard that Commander Banji was facing trials for absconding with us into the bush, but this time around; we were changed for impunity (Disobedience against superior orders).

“What!” I shouted within me

“Jesus!” one of the guys close to my seat yelled. The charges were read for us.

“That you all on a certain date decided to go against your superior orders and ran into the bush after claiming the terrorist overpowered you”

“That you all rebelled against your commandant and committed an offence of impunity which is punishable by death if found guilty”. They had barely finished the charges, and I lost interest in listening to all the charges being read against us.

“Guilty or not Guilty?” Was the question thrown at us. We introduced ourselves one after the order and responded individually. As usual, I shouted “Not guilty”. We were then brought forward for personal defense. We always thought that soldiers would always be brothers to each other, no after what happened to us inside the trial room.

Just like a movie, Commander Banji came forward and testified how he asked us to hold position, but we disobeyed his orders because we complained of not getting enough weapons and good treatment. In his words

“After we finished training that day, I told the boys at the camp that we would be moving out and advancing towards the location of the terrorist, so that we could stop them from advancing towards our camp. Along the line, some old soldiers together with the new recruits claimed that they had not been adequately trained, meaning they wouldn’t risk their lives at the fore front. Some also gave the excuse of poor treatment and shortage of weapons. I tried encouraging them, but they almost beat me up till I had to apply wisdom to the situation and the enemies caught up with us at night”

I felt like standing up from my seat and giving him a hot punch on the spinal cord, but I was handicapped in that situation. Even the handcuff on our hand was enough pain already, and I wouldn’t want to add more to my pains already.

Right there in our front, we were seeing someone who wouldn’t lead the fore front, because of the fear of death lying that we rebelled against him. Everywhere was a quiet as a grave yard and people were shocked. If only we thought someone would save us, we were banking on commander Banji to help us with that. But unfortunately, he became our own nightmare.

Some of the soldiers were already shedding silent tears at the clear denial by our able commandant. I wouldn’t blame him; he was scared of his own life and position, and had to trade us like pawns that we were.

The first day went by, and we were transported back to our cells. I have seen a quiet environment before, but this one was just more than quiet. I guess we had seen the worst that could happen to able-bodied men, and the reaction was obvious. It wasn’t quite long, before someone lifted up our mood once again. Bright with his melodious voice raised up his favorite song once more.

“We shall overcome someday…2x

We shall overcome…2x

We shall overcome someday

Oh deep in my heart

I do believe

I shall overcome someday”

Believe, that was what we needed to lift the spirit high. We weren’t concerned about the mosquitoes again in the room; I guess they had already become our friends. We sang the song together, and those who couldn’t sing hummed along. We sang till tears started running down our cheeks, and it became a sorrowful song.

“I no fit cry for that man” One of the guys in the room shouted.

“Instead, make I die! My mama and papa don die already, so na to go meet them for heaven”

He kept on shouting mildly to himself and shook his head vigorously. It wasn’t long again, before the wardens came to our doors to disturb. It was time for the afternoon punishment, and we had to go return to our duty.

We hadn’t eaten, we hadn’t taken any water, and here we were being given a lot of digging materials to continue digging from where we stopped.

“What would you think would be our punishment” Bright came close to ask me as he was already sweating so much.

I immediately sat down with my bare body and was ready to entertain his question, just then I…

BiafraBushBoy:
My Mama,
