Would suggest you go for where you have more aptitude plus interest/passion, where you'd have better chances of graduatiing with a great grade. Great grade tends to put people at an advantage in the job market. Meanwhile, "single honour" usually only have marginal advantages over one another. It depends on the industry.

Its great to start thinking of the aftermath of your education- it puts you in a better position to face the future. Please i will encourage you not to be confused but take it up as a challenge and note whatever your field of study, physics, elect-elect, statistics or anything, its the application that matters. Physicists can eventually be great engineers, analysts, etc. Note that as physicist you can study masters in any science related courses.

Just be focused and apply every lecture you received to every day activities viz what implication do they make etc. However, the final decision is yours to make- but try to be wherever you are comfortable. Goodluck and don't forget to trust in God.

hi topetobi ,
I well understand you. I experienced exactly the same confusion 13 yrs ago and now an 8yrs experienced Electrical Engineer.

Do not do a course you don't have passion for cos It's d passion that will drive you to study and excel, not just in school but mainly during practice (when you actually start to study). In the labour market, a physicist seek job where up portunities are created for engineer, hence engineers have upper hand. Since u are cool with maths, you don't have issues with engineering, physics or not (since physics is applied mathematics).
Also engineering affords you a greater opportunity to be self employed and your second degere won't have to be just to strengthen your first degree.

My candid advice; if you are sticking with physics, statistics, computer science prepare to come out with exceptional CGP in order to be given the opportunity to come and prove yourself, since you will be struggling for most of the jobs with engineers in engineering areas (power, energy, oil & gas, telecoms, etc) with engineers having upper hands already, or go for engineering if you have the opportunity.

Trust me, I speak from experience.
Re: Pls I'm Confused I Need Advise On My Career by Hesperus(m): 5:36pm On Nov 22, 2009
Well, being an Elect/Elect engineer myself, I'd advise you to cross over if you can. It gives you a wide background, and you can specialise in different areas afterwards, Telecoms, DSP, RF engineering, the list goes on.

However, you stated that your physics isnt so good. You will need to brush up on that, especially since EE Engineering is mostly physics-based. Bear in mind though, that whichever course you eventually settle for, getting a good grade and knowing your onions is most important. It's a very competitive world out there.

@Topetobi

You are actually in good company with all the contributions so far. I studied Computer Engineering and I’ll also advice you to cross over to elect/elect if you can and if you can handle applied physics! You can get by with minimal physics for computer science but not for elect/elect. I found out after graduation that Elect/Elect guys can apply for all the jobs I can apply for but I can't apply for all the jobs they can apply for. However you all get settled after your first job and settle into a professional field. The most important thing is ensuring you study a course that will take advantage of your strengths and ensure you have a very good final CGPA. You should be alright with that irrespective of what you studied.

First of all, Comp. Sc or Statistics or Mathematics - No way! you are better off with your Physics. Don't mind the people who say u can't get anything with a B.Sc Physics. They are short-sighted (-2.5  tongue). And did I hear u say your first semester GP was 4.01? Dats very good and u gotta keep it up.

All u need is motivation, check google and do a search on the kinda jobs u can get with a B.Sc Physics. See how broad physics is, and u'd be motivated. U can probably take up the Geophysics option in your final year, and if u graduate with the 4.xx GP, u'd be on your way to start a successful career in the Oil & Gas Industry. Geophysicists are highly needed and highly regarded in the Oil industry, equally as Engineers.

If u can cross over to Elect Elect, good. But don't see dat as a last resort.

If I were in your position, I'd love physics and build my GP. Aim to have a Career in Geophysics (probably with a masters degree in dat), and put in a lotta effort to dat.

Peace!

Yes I agreed with the above post.
Speaking from experience,I am physicist. After my NYSC ,Feb 2008 to be precise, I ve changed job 2ce,doing well in my field with a little IT experience. What you need is just follow ur passion and try to be good in whatever u do.With God the sky is not even ur limit.

Be courageous. Give it your all. If u will put your heart to it then you can do all things. you said it , 'i'm good in maths', then go break your own fear, records are ment to be broken, break your own record and you would ve change a lot it all begin with a change of thought.Ask God to direct u and take initiative,  all the best hardwork 4 the remaining years. I bet u you will come out top.

Wrong move!!!

If you are not good at Pysics, do not, I repeat, DO NOT try to do electrical eng.

I am good at Physics but I hate electrical eng, especially the physics that has to do with Electromagnetics and Micro-elements.

Stick to Maths or Maths with Econs/finance whatever.
Re: Pls I'm Confused I Need Advise On My Career by netotse(m): 1:54pm On Nov 25, 2009
like ibime said dont enter electrical engineering if you dont like physics, i just graduated from EE and i can tell you you'll do mostly physics till you finish.
play to your strengths, the person telling you statistics was prolly thinking more along the lines of a job in the finance sector, if you like computers you should go for computer science, there are certifications and stuff you can do that'll give you an edge in the labour market!

i kow a lot of ppl that are working with B.sc physics, if your result is in the 4.XX range u can even get a masters in EE!

My dear, you can love physics, at leas for the time you have to stay in school. go for your dream which is EE. i endured 5 years of civil engineering i really didnt like. but i was good at passing because i learnt to love the courses one at a time.it'll soon be over. don't run away from physics. confront it!

stop making excuses for urself and face it, i hated physics in SSS days and dat was the only subject i didnt pass in SSCE, i got determined, took GCE dat December (6months after i failed) and got A3, , are u the youngest in ur class? NO, so face it and make it, not excuses, lipsrsealed kiss lipsrsealed

@ Poster
First thing is to remove the thought that 1 course is more difficult than another course - its all in d mind
my own story:
I started doing law in my first yr because i hated maths in sec school and i thought it was easier than IT
Moved to second yr in law but that was when i decided to go for what i always wanted - Computing
Applied to some universities but because i didnt have any computing back ground i had to start from scratch i.e i did a full yr computing related classes (80% maths  grin ) before i started the 3 yrs computing course:computing and electronics engineering, and i was fortunate to graduate with a 2:1 - This is someone who really hated Maths smiley
Go for the course you really want and I'm sure you wont regret your decision

eee is the sweetest thing on earth. the ElectroMagnetism stuff u r talking about is just elementary calculus. on the micro-elements are you talkin about VLSI, LSI, GLSI techs, those ones are just pure arithmetic transferred from paper to devices.
Re: Pls I'm Confused I Need Advise On My Career by Nobody: 3:20pm On Nov 25, 2009
@poster you fit right into my shoes, minus six years (give or take.) Elect-Elect proposed, Physics disposed. I didn't hit it off right in my first semester of my first year. 54's and 55's formed the bulk of my compulsory physics courses but i aced my minor courses (Maths, Computer Science and the GES/GNS series) which was good for my CGPA as they were mostly 4 pointers and I had a good chance of crossing over, but I didn't. Trust me, it'll pan out in your sophomore year and subsequently when the physics becomes diverse and you're dealing with physics topics as constituents.

With respect to your chances in the labor market, bone! This is 9ja, anything gives. My coy's COO is a Classics Major, my MD majored in Microbiology (Positions fit for Business-oriented individuals) and **cough, cough** this nicca a.k.a yours truly a.k.a Physics Major isn't doing bad himself, Its all about skill sets out here. Just grades good enough for a 2-1. It wont guarantee you a G-reat job offer but you'll have a fair chance, at least.

Think am interested in your post, Am a Graduate of Electrical and Computer Engineering, graduated with a 4, Cgpa. My mum wanted me to study Architecture cos she felt I was very good at Drawings and I remember her telling me that its lucrative being an Architect. I sticked to my dreams and with the help of God I got want I want in terms of Education. All I want you to know is that at every stages of life we meet challenges and its most important if we face them then we shall overcome them. From your post it shows already that you are a good student, Having a CGPA 4.01 in physics that you are weak in is impressive!! Cross over to electrical if you can, You have Identified your weakness already and all you need do is to work on them. By the time you get to Electrical you will come in contact with very good students who can help you out in your weakness. Let me use myself as an example; I was not very good at all the courses but their are some that am the best in, so with the help of other colleagues in Class we formed a reading group where we help each other, that at the end of it all we sharpen ourselves and became better students, I believe with hard work and dedication with the help of God you will achieve your dreams and excel academically.
****Its very important for you to know that the course you study doesnt mean you will be Rich in Life, You being rich in life is a different ball game entirely, It depends on other factors that are not only academical.

Like I alwayz tell my siblings/friends "A MAN THAT IS HARDWORKING NEVER LACKS WITH THE HELP OF GOD"

You av gotten all you need to make the right choice but what i will advice you is that go for what you have passion for because it will always help in keeping you going during ur undergraduate days and after school.
The issue of not been good in physics, may be when you are into E/E you might not feel it because you will not hear of the name again but you will always come across the application, My dear,be determined and brush up on ur physics, also go for a course that can meet more than one need in the favour market, Be good and prayerful smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley
Re: Pls I'm Confused I Need Advise On My Career by Epiphany(m): 5:42pm On Nov 25, 2009
If you hate physics or feel you are weak in that subject, do not stay in the physics department or attempt Elect Engnr. If you do that, you will be singing, dancing and eating physics until you graduate.

My own simple advice is that you should cross over to a math driven course, just like your brother suggested. If you are very very sure your knowledge is sound in that course, you can come out on top and with very good grades. The thing about the market in Nigeria is that once you are able to come out with a 2.1 or 1st in ANY COURSE, the sky is your limit. I know people (not one or two) that came out with 2.1's and above in courses like Zoology, Classics etc and are working in Accenture, KPMG, Mobil and some other Multinationals. Whereas if you read Elect or physics and come out with anything less than a 2.1, none of those companies will even consider you!

I read Elect/Elect Engnr and to be honest, I hated every minute of the course. The 5 years i spent in school were the worst years of my life. Many times, i wish i had read something else, where my interest was. If i had known, i would have gone in for Geology or even Economics. But trust the advice i got then - read elect/elect and you can get any job anywhere. No one considered what I liked or what i wanted for myself. No one considered my strenghts and likes.

better do a subject  you like that wont be a struggle for you, life is not that hard, i see nigerian peeps doing all the hard course they cant handle i just laugh at them, to me a degree is polishing what you enjoy to make it profitable for you in the future, whats the point of studying physiokinetics and graduating with a 3rd class, naija peeps are geeks men everybody wants to do medicine, CFA and they graduate at 40 tongue retire at 60

u had a 4.01 in ur first semester which is good. i think u should cross over to comp science instead of statistics becos it is more marketable and it gives u an option of been an entrepreneur if u desire. EE is the best of the lot because it covers a wider area. If u are not comfortable with physics do not try entering EE. In sch i saw people who had above 4 point in their semester in EE but still had to transfer to Bus Admin when d going was tough. u are a female and i sincerely feel comp science is ur best option.
