(a) Absenteeism is punishable by cancellation of stipend for the full period of absenteeism and the extension of service for double this period; (b) Immorality with school girls attracts the following sanctions: (i) Immediate transfer from the school; (ii) Extension of service up to three months. (iii) Any other legal actions taken by the parents of the pupils. (c) Conduct at work. It is stipulate that during the period of primary assignment, Corp’s Members shall: (i) Accept assignments willingly. (ii) Report for duty punctually. (iii) Carry out their assignments diligently. Offenses against these provisions lead to bad confidential reports and possible extension of services. (d) Break in channel of communication: It is emphasized that communication to the Chief Inspector must be routed through the principal of the Institution. Unilateral and direct communication with the director and the press over grievances or requests are forbidden and severely penalized. It is also necessary to advice corp’s teachers never to encourage the pupils to break rules as the repercussions on the arrested pupil could be grave and lifelong. The rules, offences and types of punishment vary from one institution to the other. It is not part of the corp’s teacher’s main assignment to campaign for the abrogation of the rules without finding out what factors compelled their introduction. Several institutions had to resort to hard-line measures to salvage their reputation. The following examples of students’ offences and types of punishments are applicable in several schools and colleges and principals would give further guidance on the applicability of schools rules in their respective institutions. STUDENTS’ OFFENCES 1. Absence from school campus without duly signed exeats. 2. Absence from class, prep period or school assembly. 3. Assault on staff members. 4. Attending to personal visitors without first obtaining necessary permission. 5. Cheating. 6. Eating in the dormitory without permission. 7. Escorting students going to town or traveling out of town. 8. Excessive absences without permission. 9. Failure to do class assignments, 10. Failure to do morning duties or labour assignments. 11. Fighting. 12. Forgery. 13. Illegal entry into dormitories or other school buildings. 14. Insubordination or rudeness. 15. Irreverent attitude in school assemblies. 16. Lateness. 17. Loafing. 18. Noisy attitude to School activities including spiritual ones. 19. Noise making. 20. Possession of charms or ‘juju’. 21. Oppression and brutality of others. 22. Possession of illegal drugs. 23. Possession of pornographic literature. 24. Possession or use of unauthorized keys. 25. Possession/use of radio, record player or tape recorder. 26. Production of open flame in the dormitory. 27. Rioting. 28. Smoking. 29. Social indiscretion (including immoral practices). 30. Stealing. 31. Tampering with electrical equipment. 32. Tampering with mail. 33. Taking visitors to dormitories without permission. 34. Untidiness. 35. Use of alcoholic beverages and drinks. 36. Use of excessive jewelry/ and excessive make-up. 37. Use of profane; vulgar or abusive language. 38. Use of lipstick. 39. Vandalism. 40. Violation of dress standards or use of wrong uniforms. 41. Wearing of long nails. 42. Wearing sandals or shoes in the wrong way. 43. Wearing of wrong and unapproved hairstyles. APPROVED TYPES OF PUNISHMENT 1. Writing lines/warning/counseling. 2. Demerits. 3. Withdrawal of official responsibility. 4. Gating. 5. Supervised campus labour assignment; (a) Brick making. (b) Gutter digging. (c) Dusting. (d) Grass cutting. (e) Pit digging. (f) Plate washing. (g) Ridge making. (h) Road leveling. (i) Scrubbing floors, tables and toilets. (j) Tree-felling. (k) Uprooting stumps of trees. 6. Corporal punishment e.g. Caning. 7. Suspension. 8.
