Time to face the naked truth. That pastor was quoted to have said so many inciting comments against the people of northern Nigeria while addressing his congregation. After reading the comments made by people who have read the story, in relation to the S/Kaduna killings, some Christians among the commentators were urging their fellows to remember the crusade and defend themselves. Some mentioned Zamani Lekot spirit and other calamitous events in human history. Others, just like Oyedepo, prayed for the country's breakup. To them, the evil that has befallen the country was sponsored by the North to perpetuate itself in power. Indeed, some Christians dissociated themselves from Oyedepo's unfortunate words. On my part, the words made me to ponder on some paths we have trodden in our origin and development as a nation. It is clear, for majority of Nigerians, that their country did not develop because of the northern "elements" in it. From my reading of Achebe, Soyinka, FFK to Asari and David O. Oyedepo , the country could not develop in as long as northerners are the ones ruling. So, day by day, the ordinary man in the north suffers dreadful gear of waking up one morning to find the dissolution of the country. In fact, many believed that the North can never survived in the event of secession. I want explore that fear and see if it is truly justified. But before doing that, I want to state firmly, that the killings in Southern Kaduna were savage act that must to be throughly investigated. The investigation must conclude by punishing whoever has hands in them. That investigation must visit the files of Zangon Kataff crises and many similar ones, up to the 2011 post-election violence when a good number of Muslims coming from Abuja were killed and burnt to ashes by the Christians of Gonin Gora. Now, on the issue of the north as the blaming agent, I want to inform whoever wants to read that, the every region of the country has helped in making Nigeria what it is today. From the Area Boys to kidnappers, bunkerers, to Boko Haram, each section of the country has its own dark past. Thus, before calling northerners as demons, tell those savages in the streets of Lagos to stop setting 7 year old ablaze for stealing food. Preach to them, pastor Oyedepo, that believers in Christ must not burn people to death for stealing. Extend your message to those people who made robbery and kidnapping as prosperous businesses. Tell them that, sell of substandard drugs to people is another way of silently threatening their survival and continuity as human specie. Please, tell them to also identify with their tribal identity when they are caught in Indonesia trading cocaine. It hurts us when he is labelled, "Nigerian." Northerners who think that the North could only survive within the entity of Nigeria, they should know that there were a people in this region long before the missionaries set foot in the Thames to go and civilise the # natives. They should know that presently, there are countries that are landlocked, that have no oil, but doing better than Nigeria. They should know that, until recently, their land borders ensured them supply of rice, cooking oil, cars and many other luxuries. They should also know that, their vast land is still fertile. The Lagos State Government's rice farming in Kebbi is a testimony to this. Above all, they should also know that, this forced marriage has cost them a lot. They have lost their identity. That identity could not be reclaimed. The breakup, if it eventually happens, would help them resuscitate some of their lost but cherished values. They should not be intimidated or victimise with the breakup threats anymore. For the northern Christians, I want to tell them that it is time they realise that they are being used. Despite the superficial love shown to them by the Oyedepos, the northerners are their real brothers. If they set their communities ablaze, these Oye men could not, would not house them even if they could. You could be Christians but you are still northerners. That northern "stigma" is irreplaceable. For the first time in the country's history, under the President you hate, we have SGF and Speaker, National Assembly, all northern Christians. You should use the opportunity to create peaceful communities we all dream of. And those per chanced governors in the North should know that the life of that Igbo woman killed in a savage act Kano and those of many shoe shiners, innocent abokis, killed in cold blood by Biafra agitators last year were equal. If they would go to Imo to condole her family with N5 million reparation, we expect same treatment for the poor abokis from those governors in the South. If not, then our governors should know that we are not short of people who can manage our affairs. If you kill us; don't we die? If you tickle us; don't we laugh? Dikko Muhammad. |
