No Farmer! No Nation!!
For the sake of the intending farmers, I will like to talk about cucumber cultivation.
My focus points are pre-planting; planting and planting operations.
1. PRE-PLANTING OPERATION: this includes all the activities to be carried out before planting, just as when you're expecting a new baby. You're to make so preparation. Under this get a fertile land, clear either manually or mechanically where you have high number of big trees which I'll advise to avoid because of cost implication and probably lost of top soils.
After land clearing is ploughing of land which means turning of the topsoil that contains nutrients with the use of tractor, next is mapping out of the production area and road withing the farm. Follow by making of beds with the size of either 15m by 1.2m or 20m by 1.2m depending on your choice or farm size. Add mature manure to the raised beds and mix the soil with the use of hoe. If it's during dry season wet properly before the next operation.

2. PLANTING OPERATION: cucumber is propagated through seed. Here on the prepared bed sow two seeds per hole with 80cm by 30 or 40cm spacing and cover gently with soil. Wet immediately during dry season. Wetting should be done early in the morning and in the evening if you're doing dry season farming. So that implies there should be provision for irrigation.

3. POST-PLANTING OPERATION: just as we care for our baby, so we do to our cucumber because it's a living thing too and the more you care for it the good the good the returns you get. So after planting other operations are watering (during dry season), fertilization, weeding, staking, fumigation (in the case of pests or disease emergence).
(a) Fertilization: this should be done twice 1st 2weeks after planting with the use of NPK 15:15:15 and NPK15:15:15 and urea in the ratio 2:1 2weeks after before flowering. Water immediately after fertilizer application.
Note: quantity and type of fertilizer should be base on soil test, but I choose NPK 15:15:15 because it's suitable to all vegetables.

(b) watering : this is done during dry season farming. And it should be done in the morning and evening when the temperature is low.

(c) Weeding: to have a good production, don't allow weed on your beds. This is best done with the use of hole.

(d) Staking: this involves supporting the stem of your plant with a twine to a rope hat runs through the centre of the bed and attached to the either end of the bed. This help prevent trailing of the stem on the ground.

(e) Fumigation: it involves attacking pests and diseases with the pesticides suitable for the type of insects attack, using a knapsack sprayer.

(f) Harvesting: all things been equal forst harvest is after 6weeks of planting and 2nd and 3rd harvests. In most cases 2nd harvest is the most highest.

(g) Marketing: before going into production try create your market. Cucumber is usually packed in a 25kg sacs.

There are lots of good insecticides. I use K-optimal. Quantities to be applied will depend on the size of your farm land in the case of fumigation, and fertilizer application should be 2crowncock per stand. But I suggest you call for real practical training. To get all these right. 08059371220/0810877671220m thanks

Effect of NPK fertilizer and poultry manure on the vegetative growth and fruit yield of cucumber (Cucumis Sativus L.)

Cucumber grows well in almost any fertile, well drained soil. However, for early maturity, lighter soils such as sandy loam or silt loam, which warms up rapidly during rainy season, are preferred. Greatest total yields however are often obtained from crops grown on heaviest soils,
