Veterinary doctors in the house, I really want to know how effective a dog is for home security. Opinions are welcome!

Don't forget people understand dogs too.. They might be skilled in calming it and find their way into your house....

Very effective. At least it informs you of the presence of an outsider.

Before we had dogs, we had guards, omo this guards them no dey do anything, one na machine e dey always come wash for our house, the 2nd one, na im worse pass, e see cat, e start to dey shout, "musu musu, everybody comot for house come see'' like say na thief o, we sef come do mistake, we show am one small building wey e fit dey pray, ashey na sleep e dey sleep for there.
But when we got dogs, , the stories we had about our dogs amazed us, some said our dogs used to jump fence, some said they used to hear their barks miles away, just seeing the way people run when they pass in front of our house was joy too us, we sef form story for people o, we told them that this breed of dog(Rottweiler), when it bites someone its either we cut the persons' leg or the dog's head cause it'll never let go, and we ain't gonna cut our dogs head for anyone, I swear people fear no be here.
All in all, God is the one who protects.

our alsatian was very effective... Didnt spare any human or goat. Lol

Dogs are better off than human beings as security guards. I have dogs and you never near my house during the day or worse the night. Heard my dog barking and early in the morning,I saw blood all over the place.
Cus I stay alone in a house, once came back to the house and saw blood again in the compound.I knew that someone jumped the fence and the dogs had to act hence the spill of blood. My house has been broken into twice in my absence and since I got dogs, it has been a different story as people don't even come closer to the house.

Get a purebreed Caucasian shepherd and thieves/intruders will avoid your house like a plague.

This should not even be a question. A well trained dog is the most effective first line of defence. Emphasis on the word FIRST LINE OF DEFENCE.

And they are the best companions a human can ever have. I cannot count the number of times our family dogs saved us from armed robbery attacks while growing up ( my family had dogs all through my childhood and while growing up).

Now I have my own house I have 2 well trained adult German shepherd dogs guarding my house.

My humble advice to if you are thinking of getting one- get a pure breed of any of the following: german shepherds, rottweilers, dobermann pinscher, Boerbel et al. These are excellent guard dogs. Get them from a certified breeder. Too many fake breeders around these days so you don't get an ekuke mix sold to you as a german shepherd

Get a dog. Trust me you wouldn't regret it if you have the means to take care of it (feeding, vet fees et al). Cheers
