Nairaland atheists are Mad Men. They claim there is no God, yet they are always seen arguing with Christians about something they believe doesn't exist. Isn't that a waste of their precious time?

It's just like a sane man fighting in public with a mad man. Don't you think people will see them both as mad?

If you believe there is no God, kindly go your way or use your MB for innovative browsing, instead of arguing about nothing.

That is how they blackmail you into their religion- "God is punishing you because you don't worship him".

When did God become so needy?

But I have a sincere question...

Why do Atheists and Christians always feel this compulsive need to argue about some being that the former party is sure does not exist which the latter party is very sure, does exist.

Why?
Does it not always lead to strife of some kind, at least?

You need to look at the bigger picture

1) From the atheist's point of view, we are angry and tired of being oppressed in the name of God. Saturday and Sunday mornings, some bastard pastor is shouting into your bedroom with massive loudspeakers from his church. Your office/work friends trying to get you to their church. Every meeting or event must start with opening prayers. Churches not paying taxes, thereby increasing the need for govt to tax you more. If you say you're an atheist openly, you will be maltreated severely.

2) The only reprieve is to come and discuss with like minded non-religious people on the internet....but are we free to do that? No. We have christians barging in and calling us all sorts of demonic names.

3) So, on the internet where logic and evidence rules, we give back what is due to our tormentors-in-god.

4) Honestly, most of us just want to live our lives. I doubt anyone likes repeating dead arguments.....it gets tiring

The only people barging in are the atheists who normally should ignore the religious section if they truly see religion as a scam.

I can see that you lack empathy for what atheists face in Nigeria from your brethren.

How do you reconcile your heartlessness with your beliefs?

You say they are calling you Atheists demonic names, but you just called someone's father and husband a bastard. Isn't that demonic too?
Does that sit well with your conscience?
How does that make you any better than those whom you pick e-fights with?
Does your brand of Atheism give you the free will to insult whom and whatever that do not share your Atheistic inclinations?

You do not live in Nigeria, well for the most part I suppose. Are you also maltreated in the white man's land? I know the feeling of being seen as an outcast because you do not share popular belief. I don't too. So why don't I feel this urge to engage in squabbles on here? Could it be because I have found a way to make peace with things and people that I cannot change? Can you do that too?

About your second point, are you sure about that?
Because what I see on this board mostly is a situation where the Chtistian and Atheist alike opens countless threads in which they seek to debunk or prove "facts cum logic" to one another and this act of theirs is always accompanied with some belligerence of sorts...sometimes it's subtle, other times, it's bare-fanged.

About your third point, what do you profit really by such tit for tat? Save for the momentary high, what value does such action add to your life? In what ways do such make you a better person? Or do you not (subconsciously) desire to be one?

About your fourth point, I wish that were the truth in practice, but with all due respect, I do not see honesty in those words especially considering the antecedents of your moniker(s) in this section.

Thank you.

These are no valid arguments. In fact, it reeks of biases. Are churches the only one guilty of these things? You guys really need to stop this "loud speaker" bla bla bla excuses. I also get disturbed by speaker sounds from a nearby restaurant. Do I start attacking restaurants because of this disturbance?

Truth is, there's no perfect world anywhere, with or without churches! Even if churches are wipe off this very minute, you'll still have mountain of problems to deal with! This is because churches can never be your one and only problem in this world. I am what you could called a "Christian" (not of the mainstream brand), and I have no business attacking whether an atheist, Muslim... just whatever it is you're sympathetic to.

I mean, we can't all believe the same things. We can never share the same sentiments. So what do we do- shall we keep on attacking each other that peace may reign? No. You simply keep to your lane and I keep mine... Cool!

So, leave the church alone. You and I will die but religion will remain because it is part and parcel of man!

This is what we call "concern troliing". Rather than looking at the crux of the matter, you are trying to tone police what I say by using the "both sides are bad/you are as bad as the people you criticize" fallacy.

The fact of the matter is that atheists are oppressed in Nigeria. Show some empathy and face that fact. I also think that calling a Pastor (who should know better than noise polluting) a "bastard" is not wrong. First, he is bastardizing his own religion by not following Jesus's golden rule- would he like it if I drowned his church with booming audio from Richard Dawkins atheists arguments? Secondly, the pastor is breaking the law- it is an offence and can be arrested for it.

Do not compare the oppression of atheists to the criticism of a law breaking pastor.

Oh, but I live in Nigeria. When did you become such a liar?

And secondly, I have changed a lot of things concerning religion. A lot of people who hated me are now calling me "brother" because my arguments have opened their eyes to the excesses of religion.

I do not wish to engage in stockholm syndrome where I sit down and fall in love with my oppressors. Religious oppressors.

MizMyColi:

Yet, a lot of christians open threads about leaving/questioning their faith.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel of endless religious arguments.

About your third point, what do you profit really by such tit for tat? Save for the momentary high, what value does such action add to your life? In what ways do such make you a better person? Or do you not (subconsciously) desire to be one?

Evil prospers when good men keep silent.

If I get one person to think honestly about religious excesses in Nigeria, then, I have done something positive.

Truth should be spoken, don't you think.

Focus on the message and not the messenger. I might have been hotheaded when younger but the message still remains the same.

Also, fighting for justice is never clean or clear. There was a time when mods could ban any atheist threads they disliked.

If you don't know, my monikers (yes monikers) paved the way forward in religious/non-religious dialogue on this forum.

Why do people like you always seem to argue away from the main point?

You say that everyone should stay in their lane and respect each other's beliefs. But do religious people mind their business? Castigating unbelievers, pock-nosing into people's marriages, judging innocent people's sex lives etc.

No one wants to wipe churches out. We just want freedom of and from religion. Rights for everyone

Concerning number 5,

This is why we need to come together and create an organisation and forum.

I honestly wouldnt mind organizing trips abroad so that some people can see how things are done in a developed country.

Its more like blackmail- they use your problems against you in order to convert you.

Religious groups so often reach out to people when they are at their weakest point, capitalizing on the suffering of others. Despite their best intentions, this is ultimately predatory behavior.
I wonder why evangelists aren't bothered by what this says about the product they're selling. They know the most likely time for a sale is when their target is the least able to think clearly and make rational choices. All of their most aggressive efforts are focused at the most vulnerable people.

They target children before they're old enough to know that their parents are often wrong. They target young adults when they're first away from home and feeling lonely. They target other people when they're sick, grieving, or struck by some other tragedy. They target the elderly when they're lonely and afraid of death.

It's even worse than that, In my church days I recall people openly advocating this approach, and attributing it to the deity they worship.
"God wants us broken so He can work in and through us. He can't if we're too self-sufficient". The more Calvinistic among them would probably say that God would make that person broken to the point where they see no viable alternative than to seek God's intervention and redemption."

This isn't used just to lure in vulnerable potential converts. It's also used as a tool to keep the sheep and those who at least appear to believe in line.

If silence was effective then those who advocate for silence on matters of public concern like 'God, Religion' should do so by being silent so as to demonstrate it's effectiveness.

That said, the act of being visible as an atheist is not at all to deconvert everyone else..

The goal is to gain equality and that includes addressing the preferencial treatment that religions enjoy.
