No fewer than 231 out of 12,617 graduating students of the University of Lagos (Unilag) will be awarded first class division during its 49th convocation scheduled for Jan. 24.

Its Vice-Chancellor, Rahmon Bello, who said this at a news conference on Wednesday in Lagos, added that 46 of them would be from the Faculty of Engineering.

According to him, 6, 900 out of the 12,617 students that would be graduating, representing 54.7 per cent, would receive first degrees and diploma certificates.

He said 5,717 others, representing 45.3 per cent, would receive postgraduate degrees.

“With this output, the institution is maintaining its stance of gradually becoming a postgraduate institution,’’ the V-C said.

Mr. Bello, giving a further breakdown of the categories of the graduating students, said that 1,705 of the students would be passing out in Second Class Upper division.

“We will also be graduating 2,972 students in the Second Class lower division, while 1,372 others will be graduating in the Third Class division.

“Also, 103 students will graduate with ordinary pass degrees, while 517 others will have degrees or diplomas that are not classified,’’ Professor Bello said.

According to him, 5,420 postgraduate students will receive their Masters Degree certificates in various fields during the convocation,

He also said that 95 others would be conferred with the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degrees in various disciplines.

Mr. Bello said the university produced two female students, who came top in the first class category with “perfect scores” Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.00 point in the 2015/2016 academic session.

They are Taiwo Bankole from the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Science and Ajoke Omotuyi from the Department of Systems Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.

First class wey no get use. Most of them will be in zoology, history, anthropology etc. Worst thing is the world of the unemployed awaits them. I just dey imagine if it was a private school or state uni that issued that, the kind insults wey go follow ehhh. We wey know say the Fed Unis too na wash. Bringing out first class graduate only good in theory and passing of exams. If it were in the Western nations, companies may probably hook up at least 60% of them. But in naija, many that graduated with 3rd class alongside the former will soon be gainfully employed, leaving behind the 1st class pple.
. haha
I wonder how some ppl reason self. no productive or positive thinking

231/6000 is fair. It seems most public schools are now realising that its is counterproductive to put a ceiling on the amount of First class grad they churn out each year.

Guy, look at the proportion, not magnitude.

That's about 2% Max, not even up to. It's still very low, compared to the proportion of graduating students that get this type of grade at a random private school or universities abroad.

I'm tired of this response I want to give, but it will be helpful to provide stat..

Of the graduating students at UniPort, how many made first..That's a more direct comparison.

Many, many people...Some are in some of the best universities in the world. Some have graduated and a doing really well, though not billionaires..There is even one that I am working with right now. As we speak, many of the western university researchers want to supervise her for her PhD...They are lining to interview her..

I have seen what great grades with God's blessings can do..So bro, that your line is not realistic. Though it doesn't mean that if one does not have a first one won't make it in life, but it surely simplifies thing...And by having a first, I loosely assume the person is also very good or exceptional.

But its quite bad that the ratio of 2.1 to. Third class is almost 1. It shows that culture of excellence in our society is diminishing.

Weh don. Exactly the way I wanted these guys to look at it..Look at the ratio or proportion. Not magnitude. Don't say oo, first class increased from X to Y so the standards have fallen. Look ratio
