Carling Cup: Manchester City Vs Arsenal [3 - 0] On Wed, 2nd Dec by Cristalz(f): 6:57pm On Nov 30, 2009
Wednesday's Carling Cup quarter-final fixtures sees Arsenal taking a trip to the City of Manchester Stadium to meet hosts, Manchester City.

Coach Mark Hughes has been under a little bit of pressure lately to produce better results than are currently being produced, considering the extent of cash spent to bring a number of big names over to the club. So against Arsenal, Hughes will be looking to make a statement about the effectiveness of his side by keeping them in the tournament and edging Arsenal out of it.
Robinho is back in attack for City, and should start this match. Emmanuel Adebayor, Craig Bellamy, Santa Cruz and Carlos Tevez are also eager to have a go at Arsenal.
Likely names in midfield are Stephen Ireland, Nigel De Jong, Gareth Barry and Shaun Wright-Philips. Wright-Philips has got the necessary pace to counter Arsenal's(in form of Theo Walcott), and Ireland is always a good attacking force.
Defenders Lescott, Sylvinho, Komapany, Zabaletta were the 4 that featured in City's last Carling Cup match. Not likely that there will be any change, but if there is, it should be the addition of Kolo Toure. Shay Given will be in goal.

Arsenal will be looking for a win on Wednesday night to boost their confidence after suffering a 3 - 0 defeat to Chelsea in the EPL on Sunday. They've been impressive in the Carling Cup so far(their last win was over Liverpool, kicking Benitez and his men out) so this shouldn't be any different.
Striker Robin Van Persie eagerly anticipated featuring in this game, but unfortunately for him and Arsenal, he is sidelined with a rather serious injury.
With Bendtner also out injured, coach Wenger is left with Eduardo and Carlos Vela.
Likely names to start in midfield include Aaron Ramsey, Fran Merida Perez, Denilson, Nasri and Eboue. However, things are rather different now - after the EPL losses to Sunderland and Chelsea, Arsene Wenger would very much like to win this encounter to restore confidence in his side. And, as Manchester City have proven themselves tenacious opponents in the past, having a strong midfield will not be a bad idea.
In this light, Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas and Tomas Rosicky should make the bench in case of an emergency situation on the pitch, goal-wise.
Defenders Armand Traore, William Gallas, Tomas Vermaelen, Silvestre, Sagna and Senderos are available for Wenger to choose from.
Arsenal really need to try and keep a clean sheet.  .  .as their scoring frequency seems to have reduced, the least they can do is keep things tight at the back.
In this regard, Almunia is the best goalie option, but we'll likely see Fabianski or Mannone.
This will definitely be a tough encounter.

@allboyz
There you have your answer. grin

This ain't some team fielding their second side. . .this is Manchester City fielding their first team.
They are not in the UCL and they're definitely not winning the Prem. So they're gonna grab this one chance at a trophy with both hands.

If Wenger leaves those names out, he is only setting himself up for big trouble.

This game would TEST wenger'z resolve to use the Carling Cup as a lunchpad for the young gunz. . .Come what may, here's what the line-up might look like with a 4-4-2 formation

                              Fabianski

                   Eboue-Silvestre-Senderos-Traore

                   Eastmond(Walcott/Nasri)-Coquelin-Merida(FAB4)-Randall (Rosicky)

Watt/Vela-Sunu/DUDU (DUDU juz might get the nod ahead of vela AGAIN on this one, with Watt behind him! cool

Substitutes
Szcezny (wonder if i spelt that right  cool )
Fabregas
Sunu
Randall
Walcott
Rosicky
Nasri

Yeah , about the Red dudu posted the details pertaining to that one on the gunners home thread. Something about 2 weeks before it takes effect.
But why Song in defense again ? I thought we had found his right spot. Something tells me Wenger wants to make sure he makes good use of him before he departs for ACN.

Arsène Wenger has made nine changes to the Arsenal starting XI for the Carling Cup Quarter-Final against Manchester City. Only Armand Traore and Alex Song keep their place from the Chelsea game.

Lukasz Fabianski starts in goal as Song switches to centre back alongside Mikael Silvestre, while Emmanuel Eboue comes in at right back.

The midfield is made up of Craig Eastmond, Fran Merida and Aaron Ramsey. Tomas Rosicky, Jack Wilshere and Carlos Vela complete the starting line-up.

Arsenal team in full: Fabianski, Eboue, Song, Silvestre, Traore, Eastmond, Merida, Ramsey, Rosicky, Wilshere, Vela

I think its more of either Senderous has copped an injury or Wenger has finally realised he is not good enough for Arsenal.
Whichever way, I think he'l be off in January. We need a new CB in and quick too!

ManCity game starts in 6 mins!!!
