The celebration of the World AIDS Day, on Tuesday, in Abuja, turned sour as a group of People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and some Non-Governmental/Organisations (NGOs) protested what they termed as insincerity and indifference to their plight, as well as the poor handling of the HIV/AIDS campaign by the National Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS (NACA).

The protesters hijacked the celebrations, carried a mock coffin of the Director-General of NACA, Prof. John Idoko, and blocked the entrance to the Sheu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, the venue of the event, with coffin and refused to allow vehicles into the venue.

The AIDS patients carried placards with various inscriptions and accused the NACA boss of insensitivity to their plight, saying that they got nothing in terms of care from the agency.

Some of the inscriptions on the placards are: “Who Holds HIV/AIDS Funds?”,” NACA Says No Fund from World Bank”, ”Idoko Don’t Sabotage Govt Efforts.”

The coffin had the inscription: “Professor John Idoko, NACA DG, RIP” and prevented the guests who had already entered the hall and sat at the high table from leaving the hall for tea break.

But the NACA DG, Professor Idoko, who was disturbed by the development appealed for calm on the part of the protesters and called for a meeting with their leaders.
