I'd advice you sell it off while it's value is still good once you have it fixed, they look good and come cheap but they break down too darned often,

The Rover K-series engines are prone to head gasket issues, including V ones.

The block is also all-aluminium, so won't tolerate being run at prolonged high temperatures.

First determine the following:

The fan/s work. If not coming on at aroun 86 degrees, check fuse, and fan itself. The Rover 75 fan is operated via the ECU, so no seperate thermo switch.

The thermostat isn't stuck shut - this will manifest itself as the lower radiator hose being cold / warm, whilst the top one will be burning hot. The heater also may only blow cold air. Don't remove the thermostat completely, if required, get one of a lower operating temperature.

If all the above are fine, I'd highly suspect the head gasket was at fault. To check this, you'll have to have a "sniffer test" to determine the presence of hydrocarbons in the coolant.

Re: Overheating In Rover 75 V6 2.5 Liter Engine by Nobody: 8:16pm On Dec 04, 2009
First step is to establish it's just an overheating issue, not related to failed cylinder head gaskets, or worse, cracked heads.

Most BMW specialists will be able to work on the Rover 75.

It's not such a complicated engine either, and is actually quite easy to work on, once you get used to the very tight confines of the engine bay.
