Fever is both a sign and symptom of many illnesses. Microorganisms release certain substances that go to the brain thus deceiving it that the body’s temperature is low.

The body responds to this by resetting the temperature thermostat in the brain. That is, it increases the baseline.

To clarify better, the normal body temperature is a range between 36.5-37.2C. These substances released by the Microorganisms confuse the brain into thinking that this range is low. The body then increases this range.

This explains why at a temperature of over 37.3C, we feel cold yet hot outside.

Increasing temperature is very dangerous to the brain.

That is the simple reason why one is advised to break the fever quickly either with drugs, adequate exposure or tepid sponging with water.
